So I just saw the 7am showing tonight.
I would like to say it was a perfect movie.
However, the English language does not possess a word that explains when something goes beyond perfection.
Seriously.
This movie will make your cry, it will make you laugh, it will make you stand up and cheer!
EVERY character was so well written. EVERY actor delivered their best. Every bit of dialogue, every bit of action, so woven with something beyond perfection.
Avengers was my favorite movie, until Captain America 2 (which took over, because I thought EVERY character shined there). Sadly, Captain America 2 has been dethroned by a movie superior to it in every regard. And that is saying something.
Go see it. This weekend. Sit with the crowd. Be a part of something amazing. Don't wait until it dies down. Be immerse with the joy of those around you. Experience it. Live it. Seriously. Do it. This coming from someone who has a strong dislike of crowds!

Hey, Tawmis!
HEY! How dare you post this thread?
... before I did.
I just got back from seeing it, and was just coming onto Alpha Waves to start this very thread here.
Is this movie as awesome as the trailers would have you believe?
In a word: yes.
It was awesome! I loved it! I want to tell everyone I know!
... but, Mik, you never say anything is perfect. What are your nitpicks?
Uh... Okay.
Sorry Tawmis, I did have a couple of nits with it.
It was too dark. I'm using dark here in the literal sense... I don't dare attempt a metaphor. Almost throughout, it was physically underlit.
Xandar was bright, but it was the only part that was.
Speaking of Xandar:
The Nova Corps; there was something off about their portrayal. I'm hesitant to say what on a spoiler-free thread, but they could be disappointing to Nova fans.
Yondu.
Their Yondu sucked. He was more than the cameo I'd been led to believe, a lot more; but he was nothing like the Yondu in the comics. Okay, he was a blue man, and controlled an arrow through whistling; but he didn't look the same, talk the same, act the same, have the same motivation, or live in the same millenium as the Yondu I know.
Neither of those things made me do any less than love that movie.
Do you guys remember when going to the movies was about having fun?
The director (James Gunn?) does. And it shows.
Watch this movie. Enjoy it. Love it.

Well I thought that was normal - as most of it happens in space, or in a ship (with ominous darkness all about!)

Well, yes, they have their version of the Nova Corps. But the previews pretty much show, this is not the Nova Corps we know from the comics.
Yondu.

Yes, Yondu is quite different that the Guardians of the Galaxy 3000. Like _way_ different. But this was minor to me (and this coming from someone who enjoyed and even collected the original Guardians of the Galaxy series from the 90's! And loved their appearances in Avengers way prior to that!) I always accept that things are going to be changed in a movie - sometimes, it's minor. Sometimes it's drastic. They did change Yondu, considerably, but I was all right with it. (It could have been another character entirely, but I get it - they wanted to tie it with the Guardians of the Galaxy for fans! I was more disappointed that he had a "mohawk" rather than a fin, more than I was with his portrayal!) :-D

Sorry! Entirely too amped! :)
Ah heard that!
Well I thought that was normal - as most of it happens in space, or in a ship (with ominous darkness all about!)
I'm just sick of movie makers making the screen darker - or the page; comic books do it, too.
None of the excuses (or 'reasons') make me like it.
Put it this way: Star Wars was set in space. So was Star Trek.
I've read the original original originals, from before even those Avengers appearances (which I also have!), so that was disappointing to me. And I was including the "mohawk" not fin! :) And there was no reason to say 'this is Yondu'. So, yeah.
All that said, none of it made me dislike the movie. It just mars its perfection for me. :(
I still love it, I'm still amped about it. And remember - I'm a fan of the original Guardians. I couldn't care less about this group in comics - but I LOVED this movie!

Hi, been lurking again for a long time. Don't really post that often but I do comment on the AF Facebook on occasion.
Going to see GotG tomorrow myself, but reading the comments about Yondu, it makes me wonder...surely in the entire history of his race, our favorite red-finned, blue-skinned Guardian can't be the only person named Yondu. Kinda like saying there can only be one John or Bill or Tom or Dick or Harry. Perhaps, just perhaps, the one from the future, the one we're familiar with, was named after the one appearing in the present-day movie? Just a thought.

Which is something someone else said on a thread - that the name "Yondu" could be their race's version of "John" - since this Yondu is in current times (since it's on par on the same time line as the Avengers movie) - and the Yondu of the original Guardians of the Galaxy comic was from the year 3,000 or something along those lines.

Not to mention, it opens in 1988 (according to the chyron; that's no spoiler.)
Pex, that's what I'm going with. Actually, I'm not even sure they're the same race (given the fin problem). And, in the future, Yondu's race was primitive (this Yondu doesn't come across as somebody who came from a primitive culture).
The question is - how unique is that arrow?

Well the change of primitive and not isn't too big of a deal, if you're doing space opera. :)
I mean we have seen things like Pyro was a class member of the X-Men (in the movies), and younger, and also not Australian.
Rogue's streak in her hair was because of something she endured while hanging onto the Statue of Liberty thanks to Magneto.
The list goes on and on, with the differences that Marvel has made to things!
As for the arrow - that seems pretty unique. I do like that they kept that part. Imagine if Yondu is not even a name - but a title, that means "Hunter" or something. Would fit with the original Yondu and the movie version (Bounty) Hunter. :) Oh, the fun we could have if we just went down the Speculation Path!

English, iirc. He just flipped back and forth in the comics because there are people who can't tell the difference.

I'm open to correction. I can't rightly remember which he was in his first appearance (even assuming I've read it), but he's definitely flip-flopped in comics between Australian and English. (He's not the only one who's done that, either.)

I think he's flopped in terms of writers incorrectly writing his accent and not know the difference between Australian slang and English (British) slang...
But, pretty sure he's always had his "Place of Birth" in the Marvel Universe Handbook as Australia.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
Though I do think some of them might've said he was English. (Not disagreeing with the handbook - I'm saying writers got him wrong.)
He was retconned to be a British citizen by birth but raised in Australia, or the like.

That's awesome. And I have confirmed, it's definitely probably the same Yondu (as GOTG 3000), because when Rocket is holding up the thing and first sees Quill (for the Bounty), it shows the name of the person who put the bounty out on Quill as: Yondu Udonta. Which is the same as GOTG 3000.

Alright, so I just got home from the theater. I haven't even read anybody else's comments on this thread yet.
Here go my thoughts, as spoilery-free as possible.
First, I liked it. I thought GotG was a very good movie. That's Very Good, but not Great.
Mind you, I tend to love most sci-fi films, and the grittier and dirtier (and smaller budget) the better.
As a comic book fan who already had a least SOME idea of who the characters in this movie were, I felt that the first half of the movie was pretty blasé. In that, it moved way too slow, it was sluggish and poorly paced. I recognize why; there were a heck of a lot of characters to introduce to the movie-goers, basically zero of whom had ever appeared (or even been mentioned) in a Marvel film before. So, even though i liked the movie overall, most of the first half of it put me to sleep.
Really, my only other complaint, was that all those funny parts that most of us have seen on multiple previews before ever seeing the film? Well, there wasn't a lot more of that funny stuff. They rehashed a couple of the jokes several times. But I had already seen almost all of the funny stuff before the movie started playing. And, overall, the characters weren't so much funny in this film, as just jerks. Yes, these jerks ended up as heroes, and I was thankful for that, but they were still all jerks for most of the film.
Again, not saying i didn't enjoy the film, becuz i did. And if i don't spend a lot of time extoling the virtues of the film, that's becuz that is hard to do without pointing out certain things that are sure to be more spoilery.
I'll see it again, (buy it when it comes out) on dvd. Its a good movie, very good even. But, worthy of being the top-grossing movie for opening weekend ever?!? Nope, not by a long shot. But, that just goes to show the power of marketing, and of name-brand recognition.

This is from the comments:
"I'm guessing I'm the only one who'd want to see an Alpha Flight movie..."
I'm with FP on this one; I was underwhelmed by the film.
Possibly because I'd left it so long to see and had heard the passing hype of it being the best Marvel film ever.
It was a decent film, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't a great film.
I think my main issue was that while the other films have been 80% action, 20% humour this was a straight 50/50 split and it was almost as if it didn't quite know what it was - if it had just tipped an extra 10% in one direction it would probably have been more solid for me, which is where I was hoping Ant-Man would go.
And there was just so much pointless swearing for the sake of it; I get that the A-holes thing is a riff on the Avengers but it didn't constantly need repeating.
I'm glad I saw it in 2D as it was very dark, as Mik said.
I can't quite work out if the 'Star Wars' scene was a homage or just a coincidence.
I hated Yondu.
Rocket I could have cared less about, but Groot absolutely stole the show for me; easily the best part and worth viewing for alone.
Plus the soundtrack was awesome and chosen excellently.
In terms of Marvel Studios Films I'd say it's my third favourite after Iron Man 3 and Avengers (I haven't seen Cap2 yet though).

I agree, Groot was the show-stealer, absolutely. RR was...actually, he was TOO tough for me to like him. I wanted to like him, I THOUGHT i would like him...but it just didn't work for me. It's almost like they tried TOO hard with him.
Really, the rest of the cast? They had no redeeming characteristics. They saved the universe, yes, but really by a fluke. They are not good peoples, other than Groot maybe. Its like cheering for a whole cast of Wolverines! Plenty of people may like that, but I don't. I want my heroes to be heroic.
Still, it was a great film, just not the best film, not Marvel's best film, and not even Marvel's best film this year. I would rate it behind Cap 2, Avengers, and Iron Man 1.
My favourite line (even though it was so obvious, i practically quoted it at the same time it was being said): "That was my favourite knife..."

Like I said to FP, I'm sorry to hear that. I'd love it if people loved it, but we're not all the same.
It's probably my favourite Marvel movie, but I don't think I've heard anybody else say that (which makes me kind of glad you have :) - or was it me who over-hyped it to you?)
Most people seem to rank it below Cap 2 and The Avengers. While I like the former, it's a little to dark to be a favourite for me; I love the latter, but love GotG more.
For me, it's about the humour (largely). The balance worked for me; if it didn't work for you, so be it.
I'm glad I saw it in 2D as it was very dark, as Mik said.
I got something right?
Don't worry, I won't let it go to my head.
I can't quite work out if the 'Star Wars' scene was a homage or just a coincidence.
I only remember one:
(this isn't a spoiler) A spaceship flies through tunnels just like in Jedi. All things considered, I'm assuming homage.
I hated Yondu.
I hated him as Yondu. As a generic character, he was fine.
Rocket I could have cared less about
How much less?
Like FP, I'm sick of Wolverine-type 'I'm-so-tough' characters; but I didn't get that vibe from this movie.
Probably because the characters are trying for that vibe, but failing (well, Star Lord is, and he's the main focus).
In fact, I've hated some recent appearances by Rocket in the comics, because he comes across that way (and is doing that thing that so many writers do for some reason, where the thing that used to be his identity is now a berserk button. In this case, you can't use the word 'raccoon' around him. Ugh. I don't know why people think that's good.) Maybe part of why I liked him so much in the movie is because he wasn't really like that there. At least, not to that degree.

Uh, cuz it is the best Marvel film. Ever. Even in the future. :)
I think my main issue was that while the other films have been 80% action, 20% humour this was a straight 50/50 split and it was almost as if it didn't quite know what it was - if it had just tipped an extra 10% in one direction it would probably have been more solid for me
See, for me, I thought it excelled, because yes - we got a lot of fun action. We got a lot of great comedy. But that wasn't all the movie was.
There's the scene with Peter and his mother (remaining spoiler free) at the beginning.
There's the scene where Rocket, Groot and Drax fight in the Casino and Rocket discusses how he never asked for what happened to him.
There's the scene, just before the ship crashes with Groot (near the end, again, remaining spoil free), with what he said, and that brief dialogue between him and Groot.
These were, to me, powerful scenes that showed that Star Lord wasn't just a lady's man. It showed that Rocket wasn't just a crass, non stop, joke a minute Raccoon. It showed that, someone who speaks so little, can speak volumes, when Groot does what he did. These scenes showed depth and caring for each of these characters. (Gamora and Drax didn't really get these type of scenes; although we see a tender side to Gamora near the end, with the music).
So it wasn't 50% action, 50% comedy to me. There was definitely a nice dose of caring and compassion, and depth to be reflected in these characters.
And there was just so much pointless swearing for the sake of it; I get that the A-holes thing is a riff on the Avengers but it didn't constantly need repeating.
Pointless swearing? Perhaps we have different definitions? The only word that gets repeated with any regularity is "damn."
He does say $#!+ - once, from what I remember, when he says something like, "It's given us a chance to give a $#!+." (bad word for poop)
He almost says the f-word, but only says, "Fu" (which sounds like the Asian food of pho).
I'm glad I saw it in 2D as it was very dark, as Mik said.
I've seen it four times now (yes, four times). There are dark scenes. But I feel like it was 50/50. Because you get the opening planet, which is pretty dark and Knowhere. Then you get the time in Ronan's ship. But Xandar, which I felt like was in 50% of the movie (whether inside the building, showing the battle, or showing the city - EVERY time, it was day time - and it was bright.
I hated Yondu.
The only Guardians stuff I've ever read are the MPC 24 & 26 collections so Yondu's the only character I actually know from the pages, which is probably why I disliked what he became.
He was pretty generic, I will give you that. As for comparing it to the Yondu from the comics, two different characters. It's like comparing the Pyro from the X-Men movies to the Pyro in the comics. Or Rogue. Or Iceman. Or...
Rocket I could have cared less about, but Groot absolutely stole the show for me; easily the best part and worth viewing for alone. Nothing would have been lost for me if Rocket wasn't in the film at all.
I feel, without Rocket, there is no way Groot would have been as funny as he was as well.
Plus the soundtrack was awesome and chosen excellently.
I agree. I have had it on repeat for days now. :)
In terms of Marvel Studios Films I'd say it's my third favourite after Iron Man 3 and Avengers (I haven't seen Cap2 yet though).

I forgot, you liked Iron Man 3...! :-/
All of that said, I am not trying to change your mind or anything (before anyone takes offense!), just sharing my thoughts on your thoughts! I do NOT expect everyone to enjoy the movie - even fellow comic book fans! I just love discussing it.

Underwhelming because it's been touted as a cinematic masterpiece and the greatest film of all time and perfect and so on and so on.
It's none of the above.
But that's what I get for seeing a film after the majority of the interwebz.

How many of the MPCs do you have? I thought I was the only one who collected them.
I have those (of course), but I already had most of the floppies, plus various appearances and titles, and about half the 90s series.
And, yeah, I definitely disliked what Yondu became.
The fact that the rest of the characters mean nothing to me ('cept Rocket, who I have in a couple of Alpha-related Hulk appearances, though only in flashback (Bereet, too; blink and you'll miss her in the movie) and his MPC collection) actually makes me like the movie more -
because they took a version of the team I didn't care in the slightest about, and made a movie I love about them.
Underwhelming because it's been touted as a cinematic masterpiece and the greatest film of all time and perfect and so on and so on.
I haven't heard much of that. There's the stuff Tawmis said (and I'm glad he loves it so much!), but I haven't heard it that hyped anywhere else.
No wonder you were disappointed.
That probably says more of my opinion of the other Marvel Studios films, to be fair...
Hence, 'tough crowd'.
That's me!

Can you really blame me? Because really, no one here really gives a flying ▓▓▓▓ about my opinions. Ever.
I don't agree with them personally on this occasion but I fully support them and your right to have them.

I haven't seen it but will, Tawmis, and I do appreciate your opinion. After all, it's how I learn about such things, from enthusiastic people like you on this topic. I'm one of those people who has to be in the 'right frame of mind' to enjoy a film usually (though yes, some films really suck no matter what and some are good no matter what). When I went to Mars Attacks! years ago with my brother he hated it but I loved it; he expected another Independence Day, I expected fun. Few people I know saw GotG but really liked it. They liked the humour, action, and character development and that it had a story, an actual story (unlike Amazing SM 2, Spiderman 2 or 3, Batman with Heath….).

That's all right, Phil. I think we may be the only two people that actually like Wyre.

Hah! "enthusiastic people" - you're too kind, Mokole. You can call me what I am. Fanatic. It's all right. I have accepted it! :)

For having an opinion?
Never.

Sorry you feel that way; but I've seen enough to know why you do.
Mokole, I hope you see the movie and enjoy it. I don't know how to get you in the right frame of mind, though.
I know! Go to the library at dawn, with the candlestick. That'll frame you.
