View Full Version : Definite Mentions

I've just had a thought, because of something I read last night. We have a 'Possible Appearances' thread, but this is for mentions - the team gets mentioned in some context, but doesn't show up. Little things that probably aren't worth their own thread.
For example, in an issue of Byrne's run on She-Hulk (the second, I believe), she mentions the Walter / Wanda sitch.
Last night's was, of all places, in The New Teen Titans issue 37 (1987... Let's not get started on The New Teen Titans volumes; last time I tried that, a new spore of madness reigned, HQJOC came down and tore apart the land...)
On the letters page, somebody calling himself 'Postcard Man' from Grosse Pte said:
"And those wanting a gay hero: check out Northstar of Alpha Flight!". I don't know what it relates to; presumably letters I haven't read recently (or at all - I'm missing bunches of issues and didn't read them all together).

It's definitely worth a thread but I'd say in the Alpha Talk section, rather than Appearances.

Just giving my reasoning for it being in Talk rather than Appearances.

There's a Wendigo which gets sent back to Canada; they say 'that Canadian team, Alpha Flight is taking care of it'.

This was probably just an ad that ran in all comics at the time, but my Epic Edition Defenders: Ashes To Ashes trade reprints an editorial from Defenders #125 (the first issue where it was The New Defenders); across the bottom of the page is a banner that reads:
"John Byrne's
Alpha Flight
'nuff said, eh? On sale now!"
I probably wouldn't have mentioned it if I had the issue, but it made it into the trade reprint.

I've recently come across a run of the old DC Series Arak, Son Of Thunder; this is from the letters page of #34 (non-complimentary warning!)
By the way, wasn't Arak's early costume copied a little by that Indian from Calgary in Marvel's ALPHA FLIGHT?
You'll have to ask someone else about that Indian super-hero at the other place, and his costume. I've never been able to get through an issue of the comic you mention.
:( Boo!
Also, from what I can tell, his costume looks nothing like Shaman's (I assume that's who they mean).

Young Justice #1, by Bendis (gah!).
Impulse is… doing something (the storytelling here is not great), and he says: "Crazy day, even for me. One minute, I'm running to Canada to join Alpha -- Oh man…"

This is kind of weird. I first started collecting comics with a triple-pack of Oz editions; Alpha Flight #4 (reprinting the lead stories from v1 #s 8 & 9), a Superman annual, and Amazing Spider-Man #10 (reprinting The Amazing Spider-Man #243).
I've just opened that issue of Spider-Man for the first time in a very long time, and the letters page is inside the front cover.
Here's a letter from within:
"Dear Comic Comments,
Alpha Flight has indeed proven the worth of comics.
Most of my friends favour Aurora and Puck. Well, please let it be known that there is a petite 20-year-old blonde with admiration for Walter Langouski (sigh). Sometimes I wish I were part of the team. Anyway, thank y ou for Alpha Flight, all of them!

I've been enjoying this guy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6NCoK7rnkk)'s videos.
At about a minute into the one I just linked you to, you see a massive toy shelf with, like, ALL the superheroes in it. (I suspect it's a near-complete Legends + DC equivalent collection).
In pretty much the middle of the screen (and a bit to the left), you can see a Guardian and a Sasquatch. If there's a Puck, I can't see it, but I'm not willing to say it's not there either.

In Avengers #294, this issue after Marrina gets killed, the Black Knight talks about it:
"The lifeblood of Marrina now stains its blade and though mine was not the hand that wielded it, it seems the curse is mine to carry.
"Marrina was not fully mortal.
"… But already I can feel the fire in my blood if I am not holding the cursed blade!"
(It's not made clear if that's Matt Bianco's Fire In The Blood or not.)
They keep talking about her, but I'm too lazy to type that much, even though typing this is probably more than I'd have to do if I just transcribed it all.

There's a Sub-Mariner story in Marvel Comics Presents #57-59 where he's mourning Marrina. He mentions her by name in every issue.
Similarly, What The--?! #7: The Revengers vs. Just-A-League contains the following conversation:
Silas Mariner: How's the wife?
A-Wet-Man: Insane. Yours?
Silas Mariner: Dead. I had to kill her after she went insane.
Took me a long time, but I eventually figured out Silas was talking about Marrina (basically) here.

I got a copy of Marvel: The Year In Review '92 a week ago. (I know, I know, it's late. It was published more than five years ago!)
There was a big section in the middle where they covered all the events of the year; Alpha Flight got several mentions. (The mentions were not respectful, but none of the mentions of any character were.)
There was also a page-long article on Northstar coming out as gray. They interviewed other heroes, who wondered what the big deal was about his hair colour, or thought the interviewer was going to say something else.

On the subject of The Outsiders, GeoForce has basically Guardian's powers. After #13, that includes his 'stopping and letting the world spin beneath him' trick.

Incredible Hulk #393 is an anniversary issue (an actual anniversary, for once!), and contains a long text piece basically about Hulk's life history (as if written by Doc Samson).
Walter Langkowski is namedropped a couple of times, and a panel of AF (from Sas's origin) is reprinted.
My copy is in The Incredible Hulk by Peter David omnibus, the mentions of Walt one pages 743 and 746.

That's a sweet little cameo in a very big book! That panel is reprinted from Alpha Flight v1 #11. You've got sharp eagle eyes to find that one!

This doesn't really count, but I wanted to ping it here:
Ben 10 (https://youtu.be/d0lUYglNaGU?t=60)
Two of the people he mentioned have worked on Alpha Flight, and I don't think it's a coincidence they worked on other things together.

This series is probably going to lead to much bigger mentions, but for now, SF Debris is doing an article (https://sfdebris.com/videos/special/immortal1.php) about Immortal Hulk.
In the first essay, there's only one 'mention' - we see the cover of Incredible Hulk #279 at about 7:50.

Continuing from my last post, SF Debris has been doing a running series about The Hulk (https://sfdebris.com/videos/special/immortal2.php), and he's reached The Immortal Hulk. Langkowski / Sasquatch comes up.
He really pronounces the 'k' in Langkowski. Honestly, it took me years to notice it, so I don't pronounce it at all.

CBR did an article which mentions the first X-Men / Alpha Flight miniseries:

… and this one (https://www.cbr.com/xmen-wolverine-adamantium-skeleton-originally-john-byrne/) has a Byrne quote that mentions James Hudson. In tiny writing for me, so I had to paste it into Word to read it.
It includes an interesting revelation about Byrne's original plans for Hudson and Wolverine.

Okay, I've fixed the link. Try it now.

Linkara has reviewed both Secret Wars II (https://atopthefourthwall.com/secret-wars-ii/) and Infinity Crusade (https://atopthefourthwall.com/the-infinity-crusade/).
Both have scattered images of Alpha Flight because they're in the crossovers; they also get mentioned by name because of their roles in the crossovers.
The Secret Wars one mentions Contest Of Champions, and shows Sasquatch on a cover.
He talks a lot about Aurora for a while in Infinity Crusade.

Here's a video all about Alpha Flight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBbm9FJAsP8).
The guy went to a lot of trouble to make it chronological; not just by issue, but incident by incident. Mostly.
The only thin he said that I thought was wrong was saying that Wolverine's claws pop out of his knuckles. At that time, in the comics, they came out of the backs of his hands which you could see in the images posted.
And that's a total nitpick.

Avengers #265 is a Secret Wars II crossover.
At one point, Monica Rimbeau says:
"I left messages for the West Coast Avengers, The Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, and even the X-Men." (To tell them where the Beyonder is.)

I've been unable to get to the site for a while, but it worked randomly tonight.
While I can post this, Linkara has finally reviewed an issue of Alpha Flight (two, actually), and it wasn't a 'bad comics byrne' review!:

Here's a YouTube video essay on badly-adapted villains.
When they get to the Wrecking Crew, they show an Alpha Flight cover (https://youtu.be/ASDfvRDDK30?t=423).
(Also, I'm pretty sure there's some Omega Flight imagery in there.)

In the letters page to Dazzler (original series) #23, somebody suggests she go up against Northstar and Aurora.
"would Dazz like a taste of her own dazzling medicine?"
