I don't think the AF angle will actually come to be, so putting this in Gen, but interesting nonetheless...

We're going to see not only tribal things, but things that take us into outer space, things that take us into the James Bond space.

Whitaker might simply be hinting that, just as the movie delves into some Bond-ian spy imagery, Black Panther leans heavily into sci-fi imagery with all its advanced tech and fancy hoverships, rather than taking an actual step into space.

Yeah, that second part is how I read the comment, especially in the context.
That said, it's possible they'll use this movie to help set up the Captain Marvel movie... 'cept that's set in the 90s.
