1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
My first issue was #12, first volume, with Guardian being reduced to ashes...or teleported far away...or plainly disintegrated...well, being submitted to some unpleasant treatment!

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
See above. As a fairly young kid, I was blown away (lame joke alert!) by Mac's fate at the end of #12. From that moment on, I was hooked.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Northstar. Where most see arrogance, I have always seen privacy and self-preservation. He is and has been for many years my favourite Marvel character. I can even try to forget the lame FLQ background bit

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Wyre. Terrible Cable rip-off, with big guns, mysterious origin, scars and bulging muscles. Hopefully gone for good...

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Tough one...I have a hard time taking the Master seriously (what is he a master at? Hatching convoluted plans to get his butt kicked?)...Omega Flight were not villains per se...perhaps the Dream Queen (sweet concept in her early appearances).

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Does the wax animator from volume 3 count? Actually, scract that, Scott Lobdell and whoever his editor was are my least favorite Alpha villains ever!

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Stand alone issue, #12 from volume 1, as mentionned above. So totally unexpected at the time. Best story-arch...the first 28 Byrne issues come to mind, but I would say the "X-Men-Alpha Flight" mini which is part of Asgardian Wars.
I also have a soft spot for volume 2 (which doesn't seem overly popular among you)

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Puck as field leader
Sasquatch for the look, brains and brawn
Aurora so she can finally move on being everyone's punching bag
Nemesis (the only redeeming feat in volume 3)
Murmur (just to have the pleasure of totally revamping her dreadful background and accent)
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones (since she now is in Toronto)
Wolverine (he HAS to be a member of every marvel team, including Power Pack)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Northstar

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Was? Heather. Could be? Puck.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Tie between John Byrne and Steven Seagle (spelling?)

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bill Mantlo held that title for over a decade. Since volume 3's fiasco, Scott Lobdell, by a long shot. Plainly awful. I wonder how anyone at Marvel thought that book could work...some serious management problems, definitely.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne / Jim Lee. I quite liked Clayton Henry's art as well.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
It would have to be John Calimee (spelling?). Very original, visually interesting, not fit for a comic-book imo.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Mac coming back to like more often than Jean Grey and the Green Goblin combined...and Volume 3 in its entirety (but you might have guessed that already!)

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Northstar. Where most see arrogance, I have always seen privacy and self-preservation. He is and has been for many years my favourite Marvel character. I can even try to forget the lame FLQ background bit

Murmur (just to have the pleasure of totally revamping her dreadful background and accent)
Luke Cage and Jessica Jones (since she now is in Toronto)
Wolverine (he HAS to be a member of every marvel team, including Power Pack)

For Murmur, I would make a story where her suicide lead to a resolution of the hull house mistery and a retirement to superhero life to all the other hull house kids (Flex, Ghost girl, etc). I also agree with the Wolverine comment, he should be in Power Pack!

Just thought I'd say welcome to Banshee and Effexxor (even though youv'e been here a while)

Banshee, your answers have that old school feel about them. Most of your answers would probably be very similar to mine. Effexxor, kinda good to see that vol 3 did some good stuff by drawing in some new Alpha fans.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Since Vol.1 issue #1 :D

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Will always remember their debut in Uncanny X-Men #120 & 121. Totally kicked ass! Couldn't get enough of them & it seemed like forever waiting for the original series to come out. I mean, come on... Sasquatch? We finailly "find out" what Bigfoot is! Shaman? Never really seen anyone else like him, not even Dr. Strange. Northstar & Aurora? Nothing special on their own but they exhibited extra powers when they combine! Very intriguing (at the time). Guardian? Cool! Real Cool! Especially on his debut in Uncanny X-Men #109.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Sasquatch (of course!) , Guardian (James) 8) , and Aurora (oo la la)

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Major Mapleleaf II (What The?!?).

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
None were outstanding really. No real nemesis.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Pass.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight?
X-men and alpha flight vol. 1 & Death of Guardian.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
The original team undoubtedly.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)?
Aurora!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Guardian (James)

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne!

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
A few subsequent ones after Byrne.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
none

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
The way Guardian died & his subsequent ressurection. I wouldn't have killed him off - too good a character. But if I had to & did, would've left him dead. The impact & shock of his death was profound & deeply felt but bringing him back reduced everything into a farce. Unlike Jean Grey's Phoenix, which was totally devastating for me when it happened (actually felt depressed for weeks after Uncanny X-Men #137 because for once the X-Men had someone truly powerful & yet in of itself was her weakness... ingenius!) - the name itself implied she's return.

If Marvel revives the Alpha Flight series, please please please put a decent creative team on it! Otherwise, don't even bother.

Lastly, I'm happy to have stumbled onto this website - never knew there were so many Alpha Flight fans!

Hey Mokole - thanks!

I only saw the Omega Flight thread after posting this questionnaire. Can't wait to drop by my regular comics shop this evening & add this to my pull list (IF they're ready to take bookings).

I have mixed feelings about this - Beta Ray Bill & USAgent? Hmmm... I like those characters but unsure it belongs in Alpha/Gamma/Omega Flight. Sounds a bit hit-and-miss but I'm ready for any kind of Alpha Flight fix. Quite happy with the creative team though!

Anyway, let's see how it pans out... fingers, toes & eyes crossed!

Enjoy the forum.

Hiya Delbubs!

Yes, very old school. Read comics in my early years but never really collected them (comics in Malaysia was a major no-no with most parents) until that fateful day I came across Uncanny X-Men #126 at a newsagent's when I was 12 (1979?) & that was it. Bam!! Never looked back. Started looking for back issues & found out about Alpha Flight from a friend who had Uncanny #120 & #121 at a toy shop (!) for about 50 sen (less than 10p!) in a back issue discount bin.

In later years, could not get hold of these 2 issues (back issue business was non-existent then, still not developed today) & when I did find them, couldn't really afford paying so much for a comic. Finally bought them in London a few years ago, a comics shop in Tottenham or Tottenham Street (something like that). Perhaps you know them. Thought I'd walked into comics heaven - all those early Spiderman, FF, Avengers & X-Men issues (those single digit, the tens & twenties ish), in excellent condition, in sequential series. Almost fainted. They're like urban legends - you read a lot about it & you hear a lot about it but you may never see it with your own eyes. :o

Aaaa...

Can't wait for the day I go to USA. Do they have tours to major comics shops?!?

Back to the main topic: ALPHA FLIGHT - what a name! Canadian superheroes! Superheroine with split personality & decidedly off her rockers! Twin superheroes! SASQUATCH! Ultra COOL! An Indian Shaman! Later on, Beta Flight! Gamma Flight!?! Had me scrambling for an encyclopedia looking for the Greek alphabets.

Between the X-Men issues & AF V1 #1, there seemed to be a major change in the feel of AF, perhaps due to it being just Byrne. I was always waiting for the series to explode like they did in UXM. Never did. Still, they felt different from anything around then & it was still very good.

Then Byrne quit. Then Bill Mantlo came along... The artwork was generally quite bad... it was never the same again. No one ever captured the feel again & some of it turned out to be such a farce.

Anyway, please forgive the rambling... years of pent-up AF frustration being released here.

Cheers,
Switchgearman

I think you prolly mean Totenham Court Road, in and around that area you had 'Forbidden Planet', 'Comocs Showcase' and a couple of others. Haven't been in that direction for a while. I think the last thing I did comics related there was go on a Millar World type piss up.

In regards to UXM 120-121. I managed to pick up #120 late last year for about £20 or so. I hope to have #121 very soon if Santa's been good  . As to Old School, it has many magic moments, but there's plenty of good stuff out there and it's getting better. Next Year see's a new New Warrios Series, New Clandestine and of course Omega Flight. All good to me. :P

I feel your pain. Alpha Flight is different, despite some of my carping, as evidenced by the Hulk Annual, the Marvel-Two-in-One two-parter, the Marvel Team-up Annual, The Gift, and the first 28 issues. The lead story/back-up story structure was unique, and I liked most of the back-up stories better than the lead stories, but that's just me. When it's all said and done, the first 28 issues form a solid picture of AF, changes and evolutions and all, whereas what came after used the same names and the same likenesses but weren't the same characters.

To this day, I don't understand why a comic book company would go out of its way to so denigrate a popular group of characters in such a sloppy and implausible manner that it is, quite possibly, beyond repair.

Delbubs & Garry/Al-fan,

A question: How do you guys take excerpts out of a previous posting & putting it onto yours?

Delbubs,

I've been busily digging up my old stuff this past week & found a sticker label of the London comic shop I was talking about - it's Krypton Comics at High Road in Tottenham.

GBP20 for UXM #120!?! Sounds like a very good deal if it's in good condition.

New Clan Destine series? Where'd you get the news? Would love to know more. I think like many of you, I loved & collected the Alan Davis issues but gave up soon after his stint. (Don't know why but I have a feeling many AF fans collected Clan Destine). That series was a real breath of fresh air. But I do worry about series"es" :D that will require too much of the creators' capability & creativity to sustain the readership & sales. I mean, once the creator leaves & a less capable team takes over, the series can die off very quickly. Or like AF V1 - die a slooowww & very painful death (to me). I'd collected up to about ish # 70s before giving up, all the while hoping against hope the powers-that-be would put a decent team & re-energise the series. Still hopeful, I'd buy issues here & there off-and-on.

Dear Alphans & Omegans (& everything else in between),

Airing things here & seeing everyone's enthusiasm, I do wonder what makes Alpha Flight so addictive... I mean, it didn't have a good long run (turned to crap after about 30 issues) but yet, after over 20 years since their first appearance, we're still reminiscing about the Byrne run & praying for a good new Alpha Flight series. So, what is it that's keeping your fire burning for Alpha Flight?

For me personally, I believe I'm still on a high & haven't gotten over their debut in Uncanny X-Men #120/12 & to a slightly lesser extent, Guardian's sudden appearance in UXM #109 & the impact it had on me.

For me, seeing Guardian knock Wolverine out was just awesomely incredible when I first saw and read it. Crazy, homicidal, healing-factor Wolverine! It takes a lot of nerve (and probably a serious mad-on) to even think about going up against Logan. And Hudson had it.

Then, the full Flight was cohesive enough to go toe-to-toe with the X-Men! Alpha Flight was a legit superteam with an interesting bunch of characters...and adding Puck and Marrina in vol. 1, # 1 made the team even better!

What keeps my fire burning for Alpha Flight most of all is the notion that it wasn't considered a good/viable team because it wasn't created by Stan & Jack and that it was only formed to fight The X-Men. There are lots of interesting characters and teams that weren't created by Stan & Jack that are good concepts and well-liked, and Alpha Flight is one of them. They proved they deserved to be in existence, in some form (not necessarily as lap-dogs for dubious government administrations), primarily as competent protectors of Canada.

They were given short-shrift too often and unnecessarily, and the Mantlo error (should have wrote 'era', but more accurate as originally written) did not live up to any of the promises made when the switch was made at AF# 29: Alpha Flight did not become a more effective, cohesive team, even though everybody hung out together (lone villains from Scramble to the Auctioneer routinely gave the entire team a run for their money); Alpha Flight did not sell better on the newsstand (it became direct-sales-only around #50), and; the continuity had holes in it that a fleet of mack trucks could run through.

Alpha Flight deserved better because they are not a bunch of second-string characters.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Since ALPHA FLIGHT, vol. 1, #1.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
My first memory of Alpha Flight was Guardian, Snowbird, and Shaman teaming up with Wolverine and Nightcrawler against the Wendigo in UNCANNY X-MEN #139-140.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Guardian.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Major Mapleleaf II.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Omega Flight.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Major Mapleleaf I.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story arc from Alpha Flight?
Alpha Flight #11-12, the first confrontation with Omega Flight and the "death" of Guardian.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Guardian, Shaman, Snowbird, Sasquatch, Aurora, and Northstar with Heather Hudson acting as their government liaison and Puck training Beta Flight.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, who would it be (powers cannot get you off the island)?
Persuasion (Aurora's just too insane in the ol' membrane for yours truly!).

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Guardian and Heather Hudson (sans battlesuit). Puck has potential, though.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bill Mantlo, mainly because he set the precedent of nothing being sacred as far as the original Alphans were concerned. By the time James Hudnall came on board, the train had already gone so far off the tracks that he and writers after him were hard-pressed to repair the damage, and in most cases, had no interest in doing so.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Calimee.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
The departure of John Byrne from the title. I think if he had stuck on the book it would have continued to be a success. I wish he had stayed on as writer even if someone else did the art. One thing I love about Byrne's ALPHA FLIGHT is that so many of his story ideas could have fit perfectly on an episode of THE X-FILES (The Master, the Plodex, the Great Beasts, Deadly Ernest, etc.).

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I believe I picked up in Ish #1 in 1984, or whatever year it came out.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

Their X-Men debut. Thought they were enigmatic, the names seemed a bit different than Marvel's general heroes. There was a mystique that was very appealing.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Madison Jeffries. Always loved the powers & the personality, since Byrne first introduced him.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

I never cared much for Marinna. Manikin was a really poorly designed hero too, thought the powers were goofy. Probably him.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Bedlam.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Llan. Another generic evil sorceror/demi-god type. Ho hum.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

The events following Hudson's death. (first death) Very emotional.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Vindicator (Heather), Sasquatch, Box (Jeffries), Puck, Northstar, Aurora and Snowbird.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

I'm sorry, really, I'd have to go with Aurora just cuz she's such a friggin' hotty! ;)

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather, all the way!

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne. I will also give honorable mention to Mantlo. (don't throw veggies!!!) I have to as a Jeffries fan. I do like the character development he did with Jeffries and Heather, whatever else he loused up.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Who ever came after Mantlo. Don't recall name, but he bored the pants off me and I stopped following the series.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Nobody has ever drawn Alpha like Byrne. Regal looking, but still somewhat more realistic than many artists.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

That guy that came in with Mantlo from the Hulk. (Mike Mignola?) Jeez, his art was ugly & crude!! After Byrne's aesthetics, that was a -real- system shock!!

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

All of Mac's resurrections. His death was so well written, & it's consequences, bringing him back was really lame. Sasquatch's death (excessive on top of Guardian!) and turning Puck into the vessal for a demon spirit also get honorable mention.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
SINCE THE FIRST SERIES, BUT I DIDN'T REALLY GETINTO THE 2ND ONE,BUT LOVED THE 3RD.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character? TIE..SASQUACH/GUARDIAN

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character? THE WHOLE BOX/JEFFREY MADISON THING

Hello all. My first post at this wonderful forum and, eh? What's this? A Questionnaire? Do I get paid? No? Well, I am a professional qustionnairer, but I'll do a freebie.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
In spurts. That sounds icky. What I mean is that I collected Byrne's run then was off until about issue #85 to #100.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
First issue of the Flight was #11? I think. When Heather has that freaky dream after Mac died. I got it because Wolverine was on the cover (when he was cool) but I stayed because the characters were interesting. And yeah, the Canadian thing.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Talisman

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Marrina

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Omega Flight

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Hmmm. Not sure.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
The first X-Men/Alpha Flight mini series.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Vindicator (Heather), Talisman, Puck, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Box 2 (Jeffries), Diamond Lil, Black Knight (one can wish).

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Ironically enough (see question #4) Marrina. She could do the fishing.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Puck

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne, so far.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Whoever did the last series. Scott Lobdell?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Don't know.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Do you even have to ask? Bendis must die!

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Honestly.. since last summer

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I was never much into comics, but always been a fan of superheroes, i bought "the Ultimate guide to X-men" and came accross Alpha Flight.. I love Hockey... and I thought "I wonder what this team is about" and so I found the first 22 on ebay and Uncanny X-men 120 and 121 and fell in love immediately.. thus also sparked my wide collection of comics.. Alpha Flight led me to Collect Namor, then I started collecting new stuff like Mighty Avengers and CheckMate... not to mention all the Graphic Novels I've already bought.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Tough choice.. But I'd have to say the Boches-Jefferies Combo.. when Box was operated by Boches and Jefferies wore his leather Jacket and had no costume.

The Pink Pearl or what ever her name was

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
The after math of Mac's death.. pretty much the second year, when everyone is trying to come back together.. that was some of the most inspirational and soul diving writign i've ever seen

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Northstar, Old Tibetian Puck (Yeah I actually like him old and tall), Jefferies-Boches Combo, Sasquatch, Heather Hudson right before she started wearing the gaurdian suit.. confident yet still behind the scenes, and Talisman

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Sasquatch.. he can get food.. and he's a freak'n genius.. the "professor" of OUR Gilligan's Island.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather Hudson Pre-Suit

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne or Hudnall

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Guess it is time I got around to answering this...

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
I collected for a few years in the 80s. I read all the Byrne run from a friend, then starting collecting about the time that Mantlo took over. I trailed off after issue 50 or so. Never read another one until two years ago. Heard the rumours that there had been two more runs of AF, and there was another run in the works, so i got on E-Bay and started getting all the original series, and checking out all i could about AF (and OF) online, even got my own website (blog) up and running last year!

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Blown the freak away.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Partial to Puck (especially the Byrne-era Puck), Heather (both as Vindicator and as herself), Sasquatch, and Wild Child (Kyle Gibney rocks!). Diamond Lil is cool, too. Flashback was never a member, but his power was kinda cool, too.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Madison Jeffries - I liked him as himself, but not as Box.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Master Of The World.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Pink Pearl, closely followed by Gilded Lily.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Delphine Courtney storyline. Thta was a complete shocker. I SO wanted that to really be Mac!

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Wild Child, Guardian (Mac), Sas, Puck, the original Box, Aurora, Windshear, Nemesis, Vindicator (Heather), Shaman.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Puck - Eugene would always have a story to tell...

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Puck - but not as Mantlo and others wrote him, he was too indecisive and weak - the Byrne Puck cared for people, and charged into danger bravely. He was more the embodiment of Canada than Mac Hudson was.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne - when his heart was in it, he was the best.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Mantlo
Also, Byrne, cuz he sucked for some of his stories, they were god-awful at times.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
a) John Byrne
b) David Ross
c) June Brigman

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Mike Mignola

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Kyle Gibney would have joined the team in issue 1 of volume 1, and stayed there forever.

Manikin

1) I have been collecting Alpha on and off since issue #11 vol.1 (which to be honest is one of the first comics I ever remember buying).
2) The first memory I have is observing Guardian's costume and remebering how cool I thought it was. To this day it strikes a cord and will always be timeless in my heart.
3) My favorite has to be Sasquatch. When I was a kid. My father used to take me to this mountain by my childhood home. He would tease me that Bigfoot/Sasquatch was living in the area and he would pretend to hunt him down with me. When I saw there was a character of the same name. I was hooked.
4) Least favorite would be Wildchild. How many Wolverine copies do we need?
5) Favorite villain has to be Master of the World
6) Least favorite villian has to be Marvel Comics themselves. Lets face it. Has anyone given Alpha more trouble?
7) The death of Guardian is my favorite story. Not only one of my first comic memories but one of my earliest expieriences with a character i liked actually dying.
8) My team: Guardian, Sasquatch, Northstar, Shaman, and Puck
9) My desert island Alpha member would be Aurora. I mean come on besides being a hotty the mutilple personalites would keep things interesting.
10) My leader is and always will be James MacDonald Hudson
11) John Byrne
12) Scott Lobdell. I mean WTF was he thinking !?!?
13) As a kid John Byrne was a favorite. But to be honest I really like Clayton Henry's art. I think he would make a great Alpha artist.
14) Dont really have one
15) Bendis (who I'm actually a huge fan of) Killing Alpha Flight in a lame and unhonorable way. DYING OFF PANEL are you kidding?!?! Im sorry if you decide your gonna kill off some true heroes. They go down fighting and in a blaze of glory!

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
I read it in French in the anthology Strange hwne I was a kid. Years later, I stopped reading comics during the Ugly years (the first part of the 90's). That's while searching for all the unpublished stories in France of Alpha Flight (it stopped at n°73 in France) that I started reading the original material. I have since follow the serie.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
The first real strong memory I have is the death of Guardian. It was something unusual and daring then.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Heater Hudson.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
The phantom Girl from V. 2. and the ugly guy with the chest hair attack! :D

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Pestilence.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The Rock guy of alpha Flight 120.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Issue 43 to 49 with all those deaths, changes, departures...

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather as Vindicator, Young James Mc Donald, Talisman, shaman, Box with inside Madison jeffries, Snowbird, Northstar, Diamond Lil and Sasquatch female.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Northstar (at least we would have sex:p) or if I feel confident enough James Mc Donald :p

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
It depends what you intend as best. Storywise, it was Heather because it was very difficult for her. Now, who would be a good leader? Shaman I think.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bill Mantlo

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Scott Lodbell.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Very difficult to choose...I love them for different things....Dave Ross i suppose, because I still like what he does nowadays ( unlike Jim Lee and John Byrne ).

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Pat broderick: it really pains me to read his issues.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Hum....the return in a male body of Sasquatch. It was such a great idea to have him in a woman body. It was never fully used.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since about 1985. I stopped for nearly 20 years and recently purchased most of the entire collection on eBay.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

The "Pestilence" saga.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Vindicator (Heather)

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Roger Bochs

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Scramble

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Dreamqueen

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

I still think the "Pestilence" storyline was best. I am probably biased as hell (given that it was my first real exposure to Alpha), and to be fair, I haven't quite finished the series yet, but that plot was so creative, shocking...mature. If I had to pick a runner up, it'd be the Purple Girl origin and ensuing subplots.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Vindicator (Heather), Puck, "Wanda" Langkowski Sasquatch, Madison Jeffries Box, The Purple Girl, Aurora & Northstar, Talisman & Shaman.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

The Purple Girl

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather McNeil Hudson was the best. Sorry, Mac.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Gosh, I feel bad...I didn't really pay attention to the names that well...I'll have to get back to you on that one.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Ditto.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

John Byrne (I wish he had done ALL the pencils from start to finish...I still collect the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition comics mainly because of his cover art.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Whoever did the crappy Dreamqueen story...the colors were dazzling, but they couldn't make up for the weak, blocky-looking pencils.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

John Byrne's having pretty much walked away from the project. Though many talented writers and artists (some of whom even penned my favorite storylines in the series) picked up the reigns and rode on as best they could, John's eclectic but genuine devotion to the original series made it the great Canadian answer to the X-men it became. I wonder sometimes if he realizes just how profound a scope of respect and admiration for Canadian culture he instilled in so many US readers by his having had the brass balls required to put forth such a supremely original effort as he did with Alpha Flight...

I went back and looked it up...John Calimee was the artist. I'm sure he's talented (you don't get to work for Marvel if you're not), I just really didn't like his style at ALL.

I take it you mean the 'Wrath of The Dreamqueen' arc. The original Dreamqueen work was done by Lee. Can I also point you towards this Snippet (http://www.alphaflight.net/interviews/john_calimee1.php).

Wow, what a great interview...I'm glad he admits that he wasn't up to par...I don't feel so bad for citing him now (and really, he's absolutely right about his skill as a visual storyteller; despite the bad drawing, it was still quite readable). He seems incredibly intelligent and very reverent of Comics in general. I hope he can regain some level of success in the field now that he is older, wiser, and more experienced. Thanks for the link.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Early-Mid 90's Im a oung alpha fan born in 87 here

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I would have to say my first 2 comics Power Pack 10 with Marrina and the Deluxe edition Marvel encyclopedia issue 1 with alpha flight in it all I had to go by was their faces besides aurora so I imagined a lot of stuff like puck being tall Damn Mantlo

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
That is tough but I will have to say both Marrina & Roger Bochs

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
have to say probably Wyre or Man Bot

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Have to be the Master of the World

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Omega...God I hate Mantlo

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Issues 2-4 & 14-16 the origin of Marrina got me into comics at a young age due to power pack so I got the back issues of her saga and tell you what the origin of her broodmate would be a better movie then most horror films these days Byrne was such a great horror writer

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
The original 7 plus Bochs

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
easily Marrina :P

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather but only as byrne intended

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne

. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bill Mantlo...Damn you and your Omega

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Loads of artists pretty much almost everyone post byrne, noone could draw a better Box or Ssaquatch then byrne and I mean no one

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
I would change the damn Omega plot damn you Mantlo for destroying Roger Bochs

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Early 90s.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

My first memory of an AF character was the Marvel Comics Presents issues with Wildchild.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Wild Child.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Wyre. My contempt knows no bounds. I'd rather be forced to read Northstar and Aurora are half-elves than read anything to do with Wyre.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Dreamqueen!

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

I don't remember Llan the Sorcerer but he keeps coming up in this thread. Of the ones I do remember well, I hated most of the rogues gallery in Furman's run, but it's not anything specific.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Very hard to say. Anything that Byrne wrote, but it's hard to appreciate knowing he wanted off the book. I loved the World Tour in Lobdell's run.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Heather Hudson
Sasquatch
Madison Jeffries
Puck
Aurora
Northstar
Wildchild
hmm...if I kept going on there would be too many characters!

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

It would NOT be Kyle. He'd scare me too much. Too unpredictable. But food and water would be easy to find with his feral powers. I just wouldn't be able to trust him.
Kyle it is, I guess.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather Hudson, absolutely.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne. My memory is hazy otherwise.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Furman for introducing Wyre. Mantlo, for everything else.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

No idea.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Calimee.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Wyre and the Secret Empire, without hesitation. He was a weakly-derived Cable who only existed to explain Wild Child's background as his "father" (totally ignoring that he is a mutant) and tying Kyle to an aspect of Marvel that is obscure and hard to take seriously. Really, who cares about the Secret Empire? Kyle would be a mutant, perhaps kidnapped and studied, and the topic of his paternity covered elsewhere.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Answer: I have not collected anything Alpha in a long time. I peruse the internet once in a while for things Alpha just in case Marvel were to bring them back closer to what they were in the first volume.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

Answer: It was around #15 of the first volume. I had to have all the back issues as I was very much into the idea of a Canadian based team.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Answer: Sasquatch always got me going. Guardian (Mac) was a close second.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Answer: Too many forgettable characters to name.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Answer: the Great Beasts.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Answer: Too many unmentionables to mention. Llan was pretty worthless.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Answer: The Sasquatch storyline where they tried to put him back in his own body after Snowbird killed him.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Answer: The original team from the beginning, but without Guardian, as some story ideas/plots should be left in place to progress the storyline.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Answer: Aurora. The best looking comic book gal in all of Marvel. My hormones are still active even now.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Answer: Heather was by far the best for that role.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Answer: To the best of my knowledge - Byrne - even though he was a sourpuss about his involvement in the series.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Answer: Not sure. Been too long. There were a handful of them.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Answer: Byrne, despite all of the faces on his characters looking too much alike.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Answer: Probably Calimee was the worst, followed closely by Mignola.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Answer: Bad plots and revolving writers/artists.

I been noticing alot of dreamqueen fans why is that as I found her issues hard to keep my attention with it being such a slow build up what are the reasons for dream queen being the favorite?

Hmm... Two months later, I notice this question. As a DreamQueen fan, I'll try to answer.
I like the look (though it may be stolen, see 'Comic Book Urban Legends (http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2007/08/23/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-117/)'). A bit Joker-ish (not covered in CBUL), but hey. Na na na, she's got the look.
I like the idea of dreams controlling people and the line blurring between dream and reality - and the horror aspects. (Before anybody asks, yes, the original A Nightmare On Elm Street movie and several of the sequels are among my favourites.)

I like fantasy storylines - one of the reasons Alpha Flight is my favourite in the first place.

I've also personally just enjoyed the stories she's been in (partly for the reasons above), even when I've hated the art.

So, for a cool cross between Freddy Krueger and the Joker, with a 'Y' chromosone chucked out for good measure... Yay!

So I never did this....

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Manikin... what a tool

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
hmm.. The Master of the World... Though the Dream Queen was tight

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Mantlo... don't get me started on that

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Undecided

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
bringing Mac back... some legends are meant to stay dead

HA! I just found this from 4 years ago. I haven't reread Alpha Flight since posting this and it is hilarious that I just put my favorite character and least favorite character as the exact same. I dunno why I wouldn't remember but its interesting to see.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Since I picked up Alpha Flight V1 #13 in my local grocery store when it first came out.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
The cover to V1 #13 and the first few pages of the issue. Heather's nightmare is, to this day, the scariest thing I've ever read in a comic. That book hooked me on comics and on Alpha Flight for life.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
I always liked Madison Jeffries as Box the best, but nowadays, he's tied with Heather. Plus, I thought they made a great couple.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Probably Puck, but that's only because he kept getting in the way of Heather/Madison.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
As a Doctor Who fan, it has to be the Master of the World. In a perfect world where time travel were possible, Roger Delgado would play him in a live-action movie. I also have a lot of time for the DreamQueen. Oh, and special mention must go to Diablo. I still think of him as an Alpha Flight villain, even though he only showed up that one time, as far as I remember.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
That Spiky dude, I forget his name, but he was in like #115-118 or thereabouts. Wire? Something like that.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
#23-24, "The Search for Sasquatch" - I love a good quest.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Vindicator (Heather), Box (Jeffries), Marrina (Current Version), Sasquatch (Wanda), Persuasion, Manikin, Talisman, Puck II, Northstar, Aurora

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Heather

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather (In her suit)

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Eh, Don't have one. Byrne, Mantlo, Van Lente are good. The others, I don't know who wrote them. Growing up, I was more concerned with the fiction than who was constructing it, y'know?

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Whoever wrote volume 2. Didn't like that one much.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne/Dale Eaglesham/Jim Lee in a three-way tie. Not really a fan of Mike Mignola, but he did okay on AF. Also, liked Scott Clark, but I didn't care for the stories much, just the art.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Duncan Rouleau - I'll just be polite and leave it at that.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Bringing Mac back. Heather has grown into a competent leader that would make him proud. Plus, she actually kept the team together over the years, something Mac rarely, if ever, accomplished on his own.

Heather/Mac/Narya

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Vol. 1, Issue #1. I'd only been collecting comics a few months, and it was my first #1 issue! Stopped and started a few times over the first volume, but always got the issues I missed when I started collecting again.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

As I mentioned above, I had only been collecting a few months, and was devouring everything Marvel that I could. I remember seeing the cover at Fred Meyer (a local superstore chain in the Northwest), and two things stood out. The prominent yellow of the cover, and these characters I had no idea about pushing the big Marvel heroes out of the way.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Overall, probably Puck, but currently I'm digging Guardian's invigoration by Pak and Van Lente.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Wyre, but admittedly I've never read Scott Lobdell's Vol. 3.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Gotta go with the master himself...The Master!

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

One of the Simon Furman villains...probably Carcass. The way his name is spelled just seems dirty.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Best arc was Vol. 1 #1-12 culminating with the single best issue of #12. I remember reading somewhere that Byrne originally intended for the title to end with #12, but it was doing so well sales-wise that he was convinced to continue it.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Pretty much the current team, with perhaps the addition of the Byrne version of Wild Child.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Snowbird. I'd convince her to transform into a reindeer, then...well, it'd be venison time!!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Was: Heather. Is: Mac. Could Be: Shaman.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne. On that note, I noticed some here take offense to his comments about his time on AF. I always read them a little different. I don't think he ever said that he didn't like the characters, merely that it wasn't fun writing them. I enjoy writing, and there are times I write stories about a character I like and yet find it very difficult to write them. It becomes a chore and not fun. I think this is what Byrne meant by his comments.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Simon Furman. His direction seemed to jump all over the place and his original characters were...well, they were bad.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

John Byrne was at his peak with this title.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Without a doubt, Duncan Rouleau. His characters were so distorted that I felt that if I dropped acid, his art would look normal.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Add me to the list to those who would change the whole Razer/Puck connection. I could even get behind the Beaubier's being half-elven, as it would still make them mutants (possessing abilities neither parent races had), and could have opened up some crossovers with Thor and Asgard.

That would be Ashley Wood. I think the art looks much better in black and white. Some of the pages are on sale here: http://www.comicartfans.com/ForSaleSearchResult.asp

I thought the cover for that issue was awful, but the original Ashley Wood cover looks pretty good... http://www.coollinesartwork.com/Featured.asp?Piece=280109

I've been lurking here longer than should be cool, so I figured I'd stick my neck out and say hello...

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? I got my first box of mixed, leftover comics when I was 11. In that box were 2 issues of AF (49&50). It started then.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction? Standard "I'm a kid, this is cool" reaction. And then using allowance to buy many more issues through my teen years. (Can I actually admit that Volume 1 was still being published when I discovered my first issues? Yikes!)

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character? Aurora. She's my favorite comic character of all time. I really like Snowbird and Puck as well.

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character? Depends on the Volume.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain? Gilded Lily

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? Pink Pearl

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? I have so many to choose from here. I mean, Heather learning to lead after Mac died, Northstar and Aurora's relationship development through pretty much the first 50, Sasquatch (Walter) being reborn as a woman stands out in my mind as a favorite moment, but maybe I'm a little bit twisted?

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? The team from issue 12, series 1. The rest are just extra additions to me, regardless of how much I love them.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) Heather. She's level headed (usually). Or maybe Shaman.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? Heather

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? Byrne. You probably guessed that with my love of the original set though.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? I wasn't a fan of Volume 2 at all, so I'll have to go with Seagle (though to be fair, I've never seen any of his other work so I feel bad saying I didn't like him!)

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? Byrne. I liked Eaglesham's work as well.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? Whoever did Volume 2.. names not coming to mind at this point, but that's ok. I was really really unhappy with the art and style of those books.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? I wouldn't. Not because I didn't like some of it, but that's the appeal of having a story line that you'll follow. You'll keep following it no matter what. (Outside of the comic world I'm a Cleveland Indians fan... I know about following a team when I don't always like what's happening, LOL!)

Heh! Axe. Just promise it'll be the sharp kind, rather than the awful body spray!

I'm sure that my love of Byrnes springs from his being my first "favorites" as a child. Like so many other things, you don't forget your first favorite comic author/artist!!

And I find I get along with people who get Pratchett's humor. Plenty of other commonalities tend to follow :-)

Why, when the spray is so much more lethal to humans?

I would much rather be attacked with a blade on a stick than sprayed with terrible cologne. At least I know what to do when someone points a weapon at me. :-P

And Le Messor- I grew up in Western NY, so Cleveland was actually the closest team. Especially if you counted traffic and the need to park once you get there!

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? I started buying them when #1 came out in 1983.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction? My first memory is from The Uncanny X-Men #120-121 back in the late 70's. I thought there were pretty cool. However, I had to buy #120 as a back issue at my LCS, and it wasn't cheap!

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character? Puck

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character? Tough to say right now. As I'm reading through my old Alpha Flights for the first time in decades (I stopped collecting comics for 15+ years and have only been re-reading my old comics, and buying some new TPB's, in the past few years) and I'm up to #27, but so far there isn't any character I dislike, though maybe once I get through the Byrne run, I'll dislike some of the newer characters.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain? I'll go with the Master for now, but as I read through my collection, maybe somebody else will surpass him.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? I don't know as of yet.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? So far I love the whole Byrne run, but I guess I'll go with #1, though the Puck story in #5 is pretty cool.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Vindicator
Sasquatch
Puck (the real one)
Shaman
Northstar
Aurora
Snowbird
Talisman
a non-monstrous Marrina

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) Puck. He'd have some great stories to keep me entertained!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? Vindicator/Guardian

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? John Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? I don't know, yet.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? John Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? I don't know, yet.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? I don't know yet. I'll have to come back in about a month and update my answers. Right now, I'd either go with the death of Guardian, Byrne leaving the book, or the cancellation of vol. 1.

The Following is the official forum Alpha Flight Questionnaire. This automatically gets sent to new members. I would also like for existing members to take a minute to fill this out, as it is a great way to see the interests of fellow Alpha Flight Fans.

This looks so familiar. :)

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

With issue #1. I was already collecting Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny X-Men #121 being one of my first comics, ever. I thought Alpha Flight looked very dynamic and different. Instantly loved the team.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

See #1.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?

If I had to name a favorite, I think I would go with Snowbird. Though Shaman is just a hair behind her. And Sasquatch, just a hair behind him.

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?

There's been a lot of the Beta and Gamma I disliked; but the one that sticks out above the rest is Mannikin.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Master of the World, followed VERY closely by DreamQueen, who I think has a ton of untapped potential.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Anyone who knows me, knows, Llan the Sorcerer takes this spot.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

The first 12 issues are amazing, though I disliked Mac's fate as a result of it.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Pretty much the team from issue #1: Snowbird, Shaman, Sasquatch, Mac (Guardian/Vindicator), Puck, Marinna, Aurora (and if needed, Northstar, mostly because he seems to be shining in X-Men).

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Snowbird. And probably for reasons no one wants to hear about.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Mac, hands down. Heather was horrible. She was too much, "Shoot to kill {my own team mates} and sort it out later."

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne and then Fabian.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Sadly, Bill, because of what he did to Heather.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Byrne. Followed by Lee.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Carmilee or whatever his name was?

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Mac's original death. So that the stories that followed that tried to explain how he survived could be undone.

Right now, I have to go with Mac, but I don't remember Heather as Guardian, and I think that is a long ways away.

By the way, I just finished #29, the first non-Byrne issue, and it was pretty bad. Please tell me it gets better!

Well, two things.
Heather's change is not that far away from where you are. Not that far at all.
And as for it getting better - you're going to endure some really, really, really, rough stuff ahead.
But it does get better.
Like 40 issues from where you are.
But it does get better.

That said, your mileage may vary. I speak only for myself.

:p Don't be so eager about Heather getting powered up soon... as for dialogue... Yeah, especially Heather's gets notoriously bad... (well, in my view, others may have different opinions!)... and the art will eventually come to Jim Lee (who makes his first appearance doing Alpha Flight art, if I remember correctly?)... but then, when the writer switches from Bill, a new artist comes aboard, and... makes things worse.

Jim Lee's debut? That's pretty cool. And, you mean, it gets worse? :o I do like some of Mantlo's stuff - The Micronauts is one of my all time favorite comics, Rom was very good, and I enjoyed his Hulk stuff too, but Mantlo and Alpha Flight do not mix.

It's beautiful.

As a rule, we don't knock Mantlo's work in general; but during his run on Alpha, he was going through a creative burn-out and running out of art.
Unfortunately, the book suffered for it.

(The following is a vague and incomplete outline of v1, but may be considered spoilery, or telling you what to feel.)

What Tawmis described above is the path most Alfans go through:
Byrne:
"This is great! I love this!"
Mantlo:
"What? What have you done to my characters? This is awful!"
(Jim Lee pencils Mantlo's writing) :
Great artwork! If only the writing was good again.
Hudnall:
It's good again!
(John Calimee pencils Hudnall's writing) :
This is awful. Where have all the artists gone?
(Llan the Sorcerer storyline) :
Get on with it!

etc...

So far, dbutler, you've had textbook reactions. :/

That's VERY cool to have someone who is relatively new to Alpha Flight. The majority of us became fans back in Alpha Flight's "glory days" - and considering the lack of exposure the team gets, it's awesome to see they still pull in new fans!

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction? I like the dwarf, Puck!

He does definitely stand out - but then, so does the majority of Alpha Flight.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character? Puck

Not surprised based on Answer 2. :)

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character? Flashback or Box

I liked Flashback, for as little as we got of him.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain? Wendigo

Interesting! Of all the villains Alpha Flight faced! Did you jump on with World War Wendigo?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? Diablo

Heh. His storyline in Alpha Flight was pretty weak.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? The FF crossover.

FF Cross Over?

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? Puck, Puck II, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Talisman, Shaman

You're REALLY a fan of Puck. :)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) Aurora, well it would depend on which personality was stuck on the island with me.

LOL! True.
Aurora has multiple personalities. Snowbird is likely to take the form of an owl or bear and rip your heart out. Heather's liable to kill you for no good reason. Marrinna is liable to turn into a big alien creature...

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? Sasquetch

I could see that.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? So far it is Byrne

Probably going to remain that way.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? John Byrne

Probably not going to change either.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? The attack of the scrambled eggs...

Of all the stories - THAT is the one you'd undo?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? Not sure really.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? Now? Puck, Guardian, Box, Feedback, Ghost Girl, Nemesis, Killjoy, Talisman.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) Now? Aurora likely.

Calimee was probably my least-favourite artist on the book.

He was without a doubt my least favourite in the entire run.
His artwork was... just awful.

You know the whole - he didn't have the dark side to him - certainly would explain a lot. (But still - who was to blame for Sorcerer's original design? Because... seriously...)

I echo Northcotts memory of riding my bike around to all the little towns trying to find the latest issue of Alpha Flight and X-Men. I finally got smart and begged my parents to get me a monthly subscription. looking back its one of my fondest memories....everywhere I went or got dragged to I would always check out those spinning racks.

I also hated the name Major Maple Leaf but looking back I liked the concept of a retired Canadian Superhero who could still go up against Northstar. Didn't like that that they turned him into a child abuser. I think it was the fact that they hinted at a past with Puck that I found intriguing. It would be cool to read a back story with those 2 set before all the rest of the AlphaFlight characters.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
I only collected vol. 1 religiously.
2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I believe the first Great Beasts story. Byrne's art was just fantastic and his gift for writing team books is a special talent.
3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?
Heather.
4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Maybe the Auctioneer. LOL
5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Tie between the Master and Dream Queen.
6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The Auctioneer.
7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Heather taking over as leader and eventually becoming Guardian.
8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather, Puck, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Shaman, Talisman, Madison Jeffries.
Also a big fan of having a Beta Flight junior team.
9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Heather.
10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather, by far.
11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne.
12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
James Hudnall.
13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne.
14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Probably Tom Morgan as I'm not a fan of cartoonish art on superhero books.
I know most fans loathe John Calimee because of the spare unfinished look of his art (and I did, too) , but, his draftsmanship and storytelling were actually quite good. I've gone back to his run and if another artist worked from his layouts, they would've been dynamic.
15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Oof, how do I limit this to ONE thing. Honestly...any and all returns of James Hudson. I actually believed and trusted that John Byrne made the right choice for the series.

Le Messor, I just realized that I already did this questionnaire once seven years ago! At least I'm fairly consistent in my feelings about AF.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
From the beginning up until almost the end of Vol. 1.
2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
My cousin was a fan and I bought the first Bill Mantlo scribed issue.
3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Heather Hudson/ (Vindicator).
4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Probably Feedback or some other obsolete newer character.
5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Dreamqueen.
6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
That strange Arabian genie person/creature associated with Puck's past.
7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Death of original Guardian--->Heather becoming leader.
8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather, Puck, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Madison Jeffries, and Talisman.
9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Heather.
10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather. She proved she was a good leader with or without powers.
11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne.
12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Simon Furman.
13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
John Byrne. (Dave Ross is a close second.)
14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Pat Broderick aka "The one who drew Aurora with really big hair". :)
15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Every single ressurection of James Hudson, except for Delphine Courtney.

P.S. I thought June Brigman also did a good job on AF, even though her run was brief.

Note, this was not sent to me when I joined so I figured I'll fill it out here:

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I've never technically collected it, but I read through all the trades beginning about two months ago from Alpha Flight 1 1983 to Issue 8 of the Unity storyline which I finished about two weeks ago.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

My first memory is from reading The trade Uncanny XMen Volume 1 when I was in middle school and seeing Weapon Alpha attack Wolverine.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?

Puck (Eugene Judd). Just I love characters that can crack jokes yet know the exact moments to be serious and just in general be a kind hearted soul that can kick ass. Plus he's an Edmonton Eskies fan!

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?

I hate saying this as she started off with so much potential but I have to say Vindicator, especially after their tamarind island base got destroyed. She became extremely selfish prone to temper tantrums see her entire early "where's the rat poison" demenor with Goblyn, constantly picking apart her teammates (other than Madison when they were lovers) flaws while rarely giving them confidence boosts and praising their strengths. After she and Madison broke up I was starting to get into her again( I thought her relationship with Diamond Lil at this point was excellent, particularly for her being the one to convince Lil to get her cancer treated). . .until she cold-blooded murdered her cousin and stole her daughter back with out any comeuppance or remorse. Yes she never got the unity process undone, but the way it was written, it seemed implied it was for the best that she didn't get it reversed, which is ludicrous. She is a brainwashed potential threat raising an innocent child.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Jaxxon. Simple revenge motivation works best.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Sorceror. Just another in a really long line of mystical alpha flight villains, a trait in their villains I thought was wayyyyy too utilized , and he was the worst of the bunch.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight?

Best Story arc is issues 1-15 of volume one, specifically the long reveal of Jaxxon, the way Mac died, and Heather's reaction to the man she loved being vaporized in front of her, potentially because she accidently distracted him. That was just epic storytelling

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Guardian, Vindicator, Puck, Sasquatch, North Star, Aurora,

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)?

Either Diamond Lil or Female Puck.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

tie between Puck and Sasquatch.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

John Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Whoever penned Volume 3. So much potential story wasted. i like to believe it was Daniel way working under a pseudonym, as virtually every problem I had with his run on deadpool( my favorite comics character) was repeated in volume 3.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

John Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

whoever drew the vast majority of Volume 2. Again I'm sorry I don't remember the name.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

The Collective killing them off in New Avengers. yes the majority came back to life eventually but a.) two of the newest characters Mapleleaf and female Puck remained dead, without the latters relationship with her heavily implied biological father The Male Puck ever being explored. Judd has a grandson he will likely never know is his nor does he know he had a daughter and a son in law. Also I wanted to see how Maple leaf and Female puck were handled under a serious writer. I imagine they would be comic equivalents of Wash and Zoe from Firefly. B.) there was no purpose to the team's death other than shock value. It showed immense disrespect to the characters and their fanbase.

I do want to clarify I do not hate Heather McNeil. far from it. I loved her before Macs first death, I loved her as the leader before she became vindicator, I even loved her when she became vindicator. II loved her ithroughout the rest of volume 1 following her and Madison's split. What I hated were the two periods of a.) her entire romance with Madison Jefferies ( I didn't hate the romance, but I hated how on many occasions she put the safety of her lover ahead of the safety of the entire team, and would chew out others at the slightest error ( with Puck topping the frequency) and b.) the ending to the unity storyline. The problem is those two periods i hated soured me so much that i can't honestly say I hate any other character more

You've read quite a bit more than the trades! How did you get your hands on those?

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Whoever penned Volume 3.

That would be Scott Lobdell. He also had a brief run on volume 1.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
The Collective killing them off in New Avengers... It showed immense disrespect to the characters and their fanbase.

I agree with all you wrote for this answer. That was a terrible story.

First of all I am not advocating comic piracy. If anything I'm speaking about the ills of it, such as my computer crashing which helped me see how what I was doing was wrong, taking money out of writers and artists pockets, which ironically it took taking money out of my own pocket to get the computer fixed, to make me realize. I fully intend to buy over the course of my life a copy of each issue or trades collecting a bunch of issues that I illegally downloaded. And no I'm not saying that to cover my ass, I mean every word of it. Second however, I fully understand if my admittance for this past wrongs leads me being kicked off the site. Didn't know the questionnaire was here finally answering

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? (My first issue was #19, but I quickly went back and bought the back issues) - collecting since AF# 1 -

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction? (The closest that I can recall is the appearance of Talisman on the cover) My first memory is of the announcement poster - I was already collecting X-Men so i had all their appearances - the guys at Silver Snail in Hamilton saved the announcement poster for me and never hung it - I was able to get John Byrne to sign it a few years ago

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character? (Northstar) Guardian / Vindicator / Weapon X / Mac

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character? (Guardian. When I first read the comic, the role had been usurped by Delphine Courtney, so I truly thought of Guardian as a villain) Wild Child - dunno why - never clicked for me

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain? (Flashback) Scramble - the way Byrne drew Heather and the other altered bodies still creeps me out

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? (Gilded Lily) The Master or Gary Cody

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight? (Vol 1, Issue #27) I'm a Purist AF v1 - 1-12 Also like Marvel Fanfare #28 - Was lucky enough to know Ken Steacy and watch him draw it.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? (Character wise: Vindicator, Puck, Shaman, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora and Sasquatch) Guardian, Vindicator, Puck, Shaman, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora and Sasquatch

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) (Shaman) Snowbird

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? (Shaman) Guardian

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? (John Byrne) John Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? (Oeming) Anyone from Vol 2 and 3

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? (John Byrne) John Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? (Dan Panosian) Anyone from Vol 2 and 3

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? (Any of the relaunches after the original series) Guardian's recent dark turn - would love if he and Heather could raise Claire in a loving household together

You are completely correct - 'twas Mike Mignoloa drawing that arc. two unrelated questions 1) how do i format that list so it's LEGIBLE? i keep editing with spaces to make it clearer and it keeps dumping the text horribly 2) how do i go from being listed as a "New Recruit?" I have every AF comic published - 8 international covers of AF#1, and far more long boxes of AF appearances than my wife would like!

I am sure I've answered this (probably a few times, but why not again)....

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Fortunately, I jumped on with Alpha Flight #1 of the original series.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I am blessed. One of my first comics given to me as a kid was Avengers #159 and Uncanny X-Men #121.
The splash page of Alpha Flight facing off with the X-Men captured me so much.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?
I don't think this has ever changed. It's always a toss up - but primarily falls on Snowbird first.
Then Shaman, then Sasquatch, then Aurora/Northstar, then Mac (whatever name he decides to use), then Puck, then Marriana. And those two fall that far down, undoubtedly because they weren't a part of the original team from UXM. Nostalgia is a powerful force.

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Phew. A few got introduced by Mantalo that I didn't care for - but if we exclude them, I'd say Box (Maddison). Because he became this big transformer that was just turning into jets and all this stuff. I liked it better when it was just armor.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Master will always be my favorite probably. He felt very Magneto/Apocalypse version to Alpha Flight.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Easy. Llan the Sorcerer. Good gravy. So much dislike.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight?
First 12 issues were character defining.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Pretty much Alpha Flight #1.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Snowbird. Always Snowbird. I may be in love with her. Don't you judge me!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
This turns out to be Heather, because she has the most history doing so.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Whoever it was helming the story during the Silver / Auric and the dead town gone crazy.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
I can't remember his name - but worked with Hundall, and drew Llan...

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

I agree with most of what you say; and have had a crush on (Claremont/Byrne) Storm too long to judge you for loving Snowbird. :)

I think it was Hudnall who wrote the #12. arc you speak of - for me, he's done other things in Alpha that I liked, so I wouldn't put him as worst.

I've found that if I open editing in a new tab, it works (I do that by middle clicking on my mouse, but I'm on a PC, not a phone - I don't know what will work for others). You need to copy your whole message first, since it just opens up an empty editing panel.

Ah, yeah. Hundall wrote other good stuff in AF (I mean, by this time, AF was a tragic train wreck with no writers wanting it, no artists wanting it or squabbling between writer and artist) - but that "town gone crazy" story is so absolutely horrid that it even overshadows stuff Mantalo introduced (which, I can't remember who made Walt a woman, also another bad idea) - but the town gone crazy is so seared into my brain. It's literally one of the worse stories I've read in comics. And, I am sure a BIG part of that may have also been the artist doing a HORRENDOUS job (whoever that was) in my opinion. It just felt like - AF, at its worse, with what felt like neither artist or writer even TRYING.

Le Messor
03-03-2022, 10:22 PM
I believe the Walt as a woman was Bill Mantlo.

The town-gone-crazy, iirc, was the result of editorial interference. This is one of my vague memories, but I remember hearing something about how Sandman was popular at the time, so editorial told Hudnall to make Alpha Flight more horror-oriented. And that's how we got that story.

John Calimee drew the arc. He's since come onto this site for an interview; his art has improved a lot since then, and he seems like an okay guy. Just for another side of that. (I don't like the art on that run, either, though.)

Tawmis

Yeah - we interviewed James Hudnall for my podcast (Comic Relief Podcast) - http://comicreliefpodcast.com/archives/1375 (starts at 37:50) - 41:58 we start talking Alpha Flight. Around the 43 mark he talks about how Bill was essentially flailing or bored in Alpha and was asking the editor for ideas when Hundall was brought on. Although, I remember wanting to correct him when he said Dream Queen was modeled after Mephisto - and telling him it was Nightmare, since it was (is? Supposedly?) his daughter. Around the 45 mark he starts talking artist... and he'd wanted Mark Bagley (who he worked with previously)... around the 45:45 mark he starts talking about the artist he got (Calimee) and mentions he wasn't "there yet" (but like you seems to think he got much better... and really, we all get better at a craft we continue to keep at, so I don't doubt Calimee is much better these days then what we got in those issues of AF... also probably helps if you're passionate about your work, and it didn't feel like post Byrne, many were passionate when assigned to AF, which is also a problem), but he goes on to explain that unfortunately he and Calimee didn't gel properly. He does admit that he was by far a bigger DC fan than a Marvel fan.
