2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I was at my cousin's houre, he and my uncle collected AF at the time. They just got a new issues (#10) and they let me read it. There was no going back from there!

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Sasquatch of course {sas}

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Not letting Mantlo write the book for as long as he did. I would have pulled him by issue 50. His overly-long stint of writing gave AF a reputation that they still have yet to shake.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight??

Since Vol 1 #6

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

Uncanny X-Men #139 - 140. The earlier issues that featured AF didn't make it to the UK in large numbers due to sea frieght problems or something, so I didn't read that appearence for years. My abiding memory of that has to be Nightcrawler jumping up on Wolvie as SnowBear comes through the door.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Probably Heather

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Was Radius, but unfortunately he died :-) so I would now opt for Murmur

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Pestilence

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Razaar

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

The Search for Langowski vol 1 #23-24

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Heather in original armour
Snowbird
Puck (original)
Sasquatch
Maddy Jeffries as Box
Nemesis
Windshear

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Puck, no matter how long you were stranded, you would never tire of listening to his life stories.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather, experience and humanity, also willing to confront interfering authority when needed.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Mantlo

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Toss up between Byrne and Brodderick

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Calimee makes it to the winning post, just in front of Dunc.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Kidnapping and hypnotizing of Maddy, plus most of vol 2 :-)

Wyre?

Murmur, Manbot, Radius, Walt as a woman, Major Maple Leaf(1)... there is no way Wyre was the worst character on either run.

PWalk

Good reply, your right on with all of them. But Wyre, to me, was just totally unnecessary as a character. It was like they said "Hey we need a guy kinda like Cable but he has to have really nasty back hair"

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Well, I had issue #3 bought for me as a child and loved it since then, although I didn't start to seriously collect and get all the back issues until much later.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Sitting at my grandparents house on the Saturday evening that I had the comic bought me, reading it and wondering who these fabulous people where and copying the drawings from it and wishing I could draw like the artist could!

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?
Aurora (and Northstar... and... and... hell, I like them ALL!)

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
That's a toughy - I'm currently re-reading the original series and haven't gotten to any characters that I can't stand the sight of yet... although I seem to remember that I never saw the point of Windshear...

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
LOVE the Dream Queen!!!!

6. Who is your least favourite Alpha Flight villain?
Can't think of any right now, maybe Bedlam - he seemed so easily defeated!

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? EEEK - another hard one, I love the initial Bryne run, also love the Dream Queen saga.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather Hudson (maybe call her Guardian but don't have her with powers), Northstar, Puck (original), Sasquatch, Box (Madison), Shaman, Snowbird, Aurora, Talisman, Persuasion and Diamond Lil. I'd also like to see loads of the other ex-Alphans, maybe Pathway, Goblyn and a few others in Beta Flight with Marrina as a teacher for them.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Northstar or Puck (original)

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather as Heather - I always thought it was an interesting concept of having a 'normal' person as leader, also on re-reading the issues with Heather as Vindicator I have to day that I prefer her without the battlesuit.

11. Who is your favourite Alpha Flight writer?
Probably Byrne - like most fans I felt I could do better than all the other writers!

12. Who is your least favourite Alpha Flight writer?
Not sure, I think Mantelo stayed with the book too long and some of his later stories were a bit boring (after issue 50), so possibly him.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Probably Bryne - he has a certain style.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Not sure, but some of them seemed a bit dodgy!

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Bringing back Mac from the dead - he should have stayed dead! Killing off Snowbird - she was so underused.

Ben
03-11-2004, 06:08 PM
I didn't mind Wire, he didn't do too much for me, but then I've never been one for the "Big Gun" type. I would probably have like him more had he just used his powers.

 @ all the Wyre hatred

Now this one shocks me! I thought he was a great character! That is unless you are talking about Mantlo's crummy version of him, rather than Byrne's version...

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Least favorite? Roger Bochs. Eeeep.

Major Mapleleaf Jr
03-11-2004, 07:40 PM
Yep, it was Mantlo's Bochs that really rankled me. Mantlo had a few gems here and there, but his writing was mostly really grating and wretched, thoroughly trashing our team!

Also, I have to say that I don't understand the hatred people have for the 2nd series' new members. Honestly, I like them. I know that people would prefer to have the veterans come back, but I actually like Murmur a lot.

Maybe we should be grateful if we see ANY of them used, you know? Marvel still isn't going to give Alpha Flight the chance that it deserves. Readers are already taking bets on how long the series will make it until it's cancelled, and that's sad to me... I really like it. :)

Ben
03-11-2004, 07:48 PM
Yay, Mantlo really buchered the character of Roger, as he did with many, or most. The John Byrne Boches was a great character!

I also enjoyed v.2, and am enjoying v.3.

I actually liked Flex but hated Murmur for obvious reasons, ****!!!!! Stereotype of a french canadian with an ENORMOUS fake FRENCH accent, and when I say FRENCH, I mean FRENCH fron FRANCE and not from anywhere near FRENCH canadian and even QUEBECERS as a best accent than THAT!!!! HOW CAN THAT ***** SPEAK WITH SUCH AN ACCENT WHEN RAISED IN HULL HOUSE, WHICH WAS IN ONTARIO? :x

My problem with volume two was that until the original team re-appeared, no-one on the team behaved like someone on AF should. Or maybe it was the fact that it was very badly written, but it wasn't just AF, New Warriors vol 2 and Nova vol 3 definately didn't set the world alight. Definately prefer vol 3 over vol 2, but vol 1 over both.

Actually I would like to know. Dani_Moonstar, what you find interesting in Murmur? I could tell you in a calmer way (and I promise I will net yell or get censured) why I don't like her.

Major Mapleleaf Jr
03-12-2004, 02:59 PM
What do I like about Murmur? I like how Murmur was a wild card in the team... you really didn't know to whom she was loyal. Her motives were mysterious... while she did carry herself as a bit of a ****, I think it was more than that. I think she has deeper layers that we just never got to see. Also, I enjoyed her power... I know Murmur seemed like a mixture of Aurora and Persuasion, but I did like her.

See, I think AFv2 had it right when they introduced new characters. New characters are never a bad thing... I wasn't a long-time fan of the series, so I read it with no expectations or preconceived notions of what it SHOULD be. And I really, really loved it. Especially Murmur.

syvalois
03-13-2004, 02:10 PM
I think Murmur could have been interesting, mostly after she was injured, she was less a **** and stereopycal, but it came too late in the serie. She should have had more development. Their was also the her fear of 'bibitte' (what is the word in english? like insects, worms???) Anyway, that could have been interesting if we had seen more. I don't think her loyalty was a mystery, she was loyal to herself and her motives where selffish, imo. I also think she could have been more than a ****, but not much had been shown to support that. She started to be more interesting, imo, when she got injured and she really feared to be put out of AF.

Her powers where not really original, but that's not the most important thing for me in a characters, it's the personality. For me, she was insulting. I know, I'm asking too much in the detail, but that accent was so fake, I could not stand it. Everything in her said French and not French Canadian or Quebecer. We have only 2 french canadian characters in Marvel, and both are ****s, come on!!! Aurora at least is the first and she had 2 personalities. Plus, I liked the 1st Aurora, the one before the power changed, she was sexy but not dumb or vulgar and Byrne had kept the fragile balance and avoid the stereotype of the easy french girl. Murmur's accent was one from a french girl and not one coming from Quebec and very far form a girl that grew up in Ontario.

I always thought she was mixed up in the head and that she acted the way she thought people expected of her (see the stereotype) but see absolutely wonted to be loved and accepted by everyone.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since Volume 1, Issue 12.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

I'll never forget seeing Alpha Flight for the first time in an ad promoting #12 that was in an issue of Fantastic Four. They looked like such a cool cast of characters and the fact that one of them wasn't going to survive was really new and different from anything I had read up until then. I had only read Fantastic Four as a kid, so Alpha Flight was radically different.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

This is a tough one. I really like Puck when he is the true rough & tough Byrne version. Marrina is a close second.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Another tough one. Manbot never made sense to me. Murmur was an unnecessary alternate version of Persuasion.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Master. This guy has always had the potential to be another Doctor Doom-class villain, given the right treatment.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Llan the Sorcerer - maybe if there had been less editorial involvement & a better artist, he would have been good, but as it is - LAME.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

X-men 120-121 was excellent. In the series itself, probably #12.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

The classic line-up, with the Beta & Gamma members around for a little variety.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Shaman. Maybe his powers couldn't get us off of the island, but he'd be able to conjure sustenance for us.

Or maybe Aurora, if you wanted to be sure that there would be more people to talk to. Hehe :D

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

I think Puck would make a great leader. Always have.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

I know I'm in the minority, but I really liked Steve Seagle. i think he was really going to take the team places in regards to gaining some respect if he had been given the chance.
Byrne will always be my favorite, but the fact that the guy disses Alpha Flight and his work on it has left a bad taste in my mouth.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Mantlo. 'Nuff said.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Jim Lee. (After Byrne.)

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

John Calimee.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

The resurrection of Guardian. That began the worst trend in Alpha history...Guardian - the REAL phoenix.

Also, I have to say that I don't understand the hatred people have for the 2nd series' new members. Honestly, I like them. I know that people would prefer to have the veterans come back, but I actually like Murmur a lot.

HOW CAN THAT b***h SPEAK WITH SUCH AN ACCENT WHEN RAISED IN HULL HOUSE, WHICH WAS IN ONTARIO? :x

...euh... I think I went mad for a minute there.  And don't make me start about wire  ...

Murmur was an unnecessary alternate version of Persuasion.

Which is exactly what I thought - what was the point of inventing a new character when there was already a suitable character in the AF universe.

Murmur was an unnecessary alternate version of Persuasion.

Which is exactly what I thought - what was the point of inventing a new character when there was already a suitable character in the AF universe.

Okay, please don't slap me here, but here's a thought... if Persuasion was all that suitable, why didn't they use her? Simple. The second Alpha Flight series was drastically different than the first, for one. It was all about the manipulation of the team by Department H, playing the conspiracy angle up to the fullest, and it was a lot easier for Dept. H to manipulate a few veteran members (which they could have on the team to show the Canadian public that the new Alpha Flight had the membership and support of people like Heather and Puck, whom they knew of and trusted) than to manipulate a team made up ENTIRELY of veteran members. See, Murmur and the other Hull House recruits were people that Dept. H could control more readily (this was hinted at by referring to them as "Legacy" cases) because they had groomed them for this duty. I'd be willing to bet that Dept. H had a hand in the upbringing of Radius, Flex, Murmur, and Ghost Girl practically from birth... training them (probably not even to their knowledge) to be the perfect government [sleeper] agents. Dept. H probably felt that these children were more trustworthy and thus more suitable, because they could control them easier.

And second, when Marvel decided to relaunch Alpha Flight in the wake of Onslaught, creating new characters for a series can help new readers get into the book more. They don't have to know EVERYONE'S history, because they've got fresh faces that they can start following, and start to root for, because they know what these characters are about. They don't have to run out and buy a bunch of back issues to find out who the characters are. They're learning as they go. That's one of the reasons that I'm enjoying Lobdell's Alpha Flight: because the majority of these characters are brand-new, and it's easy for me to get on board and follow what's going on without having to ask a bunch of questions, like "So how did so-and-so come to this decision since the last series?"

Does this make any sense?

beetleblack
03-15-2004, 05:39 PM
Yes, it does make perfect sense. I have to admit that I've only read a few issues of v.2 (and that was at the time of the release) I've since bought all the v.2 issues and intend to read them after completing the re-read of v.1 - so my knowledge of that series is not good. I just remember at the time picking it up and thinking it odd that they would bring in a character with almost exactly the same powers as Persuasion, and as I rather liked her it kind of annoyed me.

I'm sure in the long run of the story arc it makes sense why they would have had to have new characters come into the Flight (as well as the reasons of new readers wouldn't be bogged down with too much history if the team was made-up of all veterans) and perhaps when I do read the whole story my opinion will change. I suppose at least in v.2 there were more original characters than we're getting in the all new v.3... but again, I should really reserve judgment.

Ahab
03-16-2004, 10:10 PM
I think what made it even worse was that in the promo picture for the second series, Murmur was shaded with a light purple coloring. I doubt that it was intentional, but it made it even more annoying that she replaced Kara.
I agree with the rationale behind why they chose a new character. I guess I just don't understand why they had to choose someone with such similar powers. If it was to control Sasquatch, they could have had a character with low-level telepathy or bestial communicative skills...

Major Mapleleaf Jr
03-17-2004, 01:58 AM
My thoughts on why Murmur instead of someone with low-level telepathy or bestial communications skills... well, maybe they wanted to play with the old plotline of Kara using her powers indiscriminately and selfishly. The difference, though, is that Kara had a good heart... and we can't really say the same for sure about Murmur, since she was so obviously under Department H control. She tried more than once to use her powers to kill (albeit, she was being controlled by Mesmero for one of those incidents). Murmur was a wildcard that Department H enjoyed having, because she could (if so ordered) make any member of that team do anything she wanted.

1. Series 2, #1.
2. I first bought an AF title (without collecting) when V.1.125 came out. I rember seeing Northstar and Witchfire (tho I didn't learn their names until MUCH later...
3. hmmm.... dunno... I'd say Byrne era Snowbird, or post-#100 Northstar (he was less of a jackass)
4. 'character' or 'hero'?? well, let's assume hero - that would have to be Witchfire...
5. Toss up between the Master and Kolomaq the Great Beast
6. EASY!! Smart Alec and Llan the Sorcerer
7. oooh, a toughie.... I'd say the first 12 iss' of vol. 1
8. *drools at prspect*... um, sorry... Aurora, Nemesis, 'Star, Wildchild, Snowbird, and Sasquatch, just because every team needs a Wookie-wannabe... anyone else is just gravy
9. what kind of question is that?? okay, I'll play along... for shear survival sake, Wildchild (in his sane days; don;t wanna end up food...)
10. Was: Heather, Is: Well, there's only Walt right now, Could be:I think that Madison had potential...
11. Byrne
12. Mantlo, o'course. need you ask?
13. Clark
14. Rouleau

Character wise I think Aurora has more potential than Heather - but then I've always prefered mad birds!

I liked Heather - don't get me wrong - but I prefer the orginal Heather rather than the various odd versions we got later on. Putting her in a suit was a bad move. Also her constant whinging at the loss of her husband and having to be leader always got on my nerves - the original Heather would not have done that. Guess it all boils down to who's writing her.

As for the whole Bryne hating the series that he helped create, I seem to remember reading somewhere (not too sure where) that he felt the characters were all too two dimensional or something and that it was too hard to write for them!!!! I'm really not sure if this is true or not, it seems particularly stupid coming from the person who CREATED these characters, surely if he was unhappy with them HE could have changed them???

DelBubs
03-19-2004, 10:08 PM
Aurora and Heather where almost ruined as characters by Mantlo, but Heather made a strong comeback after Mantlo left, Aurora had been set on a path of malignant psychosis and all the following writers seemed to concentrate on that aspect of her character.

Since then Heathers been a mainstay of the team, while Aurora has just become more and pathetic. Tieri, has written her well, but only as a as a continuance of the psychotic nutter we see today. I'd like Aurora to become a member of AF again, but not as a liability, like she is now.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

About nine months. I've only got the back-issues up to #50, as that seems to be where the series hit the "OK, this is no longer entertaining enough to be worth actual money" point.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

*sigh* X-Men. Animated series. "Repo Men". Stop laughing -- I swear I can actually reach through this screen and do you bodily harm.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Northstar. Snark, speed, and abandonment issues. What's not to love?

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Sasquatch. My first impression of him in the comics was the dumb smart jock, and I'm afraid it's stuck.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Scrambler!

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Swrts...the Svwerts...the Szvxth...the Dark Elves.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

AF vol.1 #7 and #8 -- The Importance of Being Deadly and Cold Hands, Cold Heart. Special runner-up prize for "The Gift".

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Easy question, that. Original volume one, issue one line-up.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Northstar. I hate feeling obligated to make conversation. Not a problem with that guy.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

I thought they did just fine under Vindicator.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Can I say Chuck Austen just for writing a horrible, horrible Northstar? No? Lobdell, then.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?? Wrecking Crew

Pathway

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Volume 3/Issue 1

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
The X-Men cartoon. My first thought was how cool Vindicator's costume was. Best costume ever.

as for the comic, my first reaction was, :D

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Snowbird. Ignoring the convoluted and confusing continuity, from what I have read she is a consistantly interesting character.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

As it stands, I have none and wish to avoid back issues of bad periods in order to gain one.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

None yet.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Department H, I agree with Lobdell's assessment.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

I really enjoyed X-Men 120/121. I think the Alpha Flight issues were by far the best part of the Claremont/Byrne X-Men.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Guardian, Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora

Although, here's hoping the new ones can earn their place.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

New Puck, my theory is this, eventually, anyone would become friends under those circumstances unless they have some bitter animosity, in which place they kill each other. I have no bitter animosity with any Flighters. And since I'd end up friends with any of them, it makes sense to go with a babe.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

I have no idea, although I liked Guardian as the leader who doesn't want to lead, but that makes him an unlikely candidate for best at it. Probably Heather is best.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Undecided.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

I'm happier without an asnwer, unless Austen counts, stupid armour.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

I want to say someone different, but lets face it, Jim Lee just freaking rules.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

I'm happier without an answer.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

The armour.

I'm not going to try the new incarnation. The only member that's carried over is Sasquatch and, like I said, he's not a favorite of mine. Between a writer I'm not crazy about, an old cast-member I'm not fond of, and a new cast that doesn't interest me either way, there's just not a lot of incentive for me to give Lobdell or this book a chance.

Agreed - while re-reading the original series it's amazing how many different directions it goes in over the 130 issues. At the end of the day I intend to give the book the benifit of the doubt to begin with, give it a good chance and see how it goes. Yeah I went over there and checked and couldn't really find anything. What shocks me is I met the guy about 10 years back and talked up Alpha Flight with him for 15 minutes. I was 16 or 17 and kept saying to myself "I'm talking with the man who brought me Sasquatch and Puck, AWESOME!!!" At the time he was very cordial and took some time to discuss the series. Basically I just told him how much I liked the idea of #12 Vol 1.
I have to pick up my ice cream if what you guys are telling me is true.

MDT: Second now only to FF, this book was the closest thing to you it seemed: a super-hero team spread across the vast space of Canada and not just Canadian clones of the Avengers. At what point did you decide to give up the book in lieu of the Incredible Hulk (a comparatively short run)? Any regrets in the long run?

JB: ALPHA FLIGHT was never much fun. The characters were created merely to survive a fight with the X-Men, and I never thought about them having their own title. When Marvel finally cajolled me into doing ALPHA FLIGHT, I realized how incredibly two-dimensional they were, and spend some twenty-eight issues trying to find ways to correct this fault. Nothing really sang for me. If I have any regrets, it would probably be that I did the book at all! It was not a good time for me.

MDT: Any thoughts of reviving the team with your particular twist on them?

JB: Well, based on the above. . . .

MDT: What's your take on the last incarnation of the team?

JB: Didn't look. Saw a poster of them with steroidic muscles and constipated grimaces, and thought "Okay! No need to even open an issue!"

Splat, there goes my ice cream all over again!

Hmph! If I had ice cream, Byrne would be wearing it about now!

Mind you I don't think that's the ENTIRE story, but I don't feel like writing a long post displaying my thoughts on the matter (but if Ben wants to -which I doubt - he's free to), so I'll wait till later.

Thanks Ben, now I have ice cream to clean up.

Maybe when I spoke with him he was just going along with a kid to not squash my feelings on the team. How can these characters be considered 2D? Geez if anything they have too many dimensions to them.

Well - and no disrespect to John Byrne himself (whom I AM a fan of) - but I think it's a shame that he isn't happy or proud of his work on Alpha Flight because from what I can see most of us think that his run was the BEST!

HOWEVER at the end of the day, we read it and loved it and it meant something to us and just because he wasn't happy with it doesn't mean that we have to change our opinions. For me (and I'm guessing for pretty much most of you) the characters were rounded and REAL and the stories were produced well and illistrated beautifully. And who knows, people's attitudes change - just because he has one opinion of AF at the moment does not mean that he will always have this opinion - maybe in years to come he will come to see his work on AF with a new light. Only time will tell, I guess...

Abso-friggin'-lutely.

I have to admit, though, I don't see anything so bad about some of Byrne's comments...the first part is true enough: Alpha never really had a uniting theme like a good many other super-hero teams. They were just a group of Canadians super-heroes whose only purpose for creation was to beat-up the X-Men for a couple of issues. I can understand why a writer would less than thrilled to be assigned them. I also won't argue with his lack of enthusiasm regarding the later incarnations of the team -- most of the uniqueness of AF had long since been squandered and they looked like a typical (and not very well done) super-hero team.

The middle section of his comment however, comes across as Byrne either being too critical of his own work (if you want to take it nicely) or just *****ing because the enduring popularity of his take on the the team doesn't vindicate his reluctance to work on the book in the first place. It's a shame either way, because the team's lack of unification and general oddness was what made Byrne's AF run memorible. Alpha Flight was one of the most screwed up teams in Marvel's history and that's what made it interesting -- they had no goal in common, they were just government employees thrown together and it showed! Half the time, they could barely stand each other (Northstar ticking off everyone, including his own sister eventually, Talisman's grudges again Shaman, Sasquatch picking on Puck's height, Snowbird's seeming indifference towards everyone except Shaman, poor Marinna nearly gutting Puck, Heather's grief and self-loathing after Mac's death) and the other half they were desperately in love/lust with each other (Puck/Heather, Aurora/Sasquatch, Mac/Heather). It was a train wreck, but it was great to watch.

If the writer doesn't/won't see the merit of his own work, that's a shame, but once it's on the shelves, it's out of his hands and his opinion really doesn't matter that much.

I can respect that, however the origonal members will be showing up in #3, and I'd say there's a good chance they will be sticking around. My view on collecting Alpha, even if you don't like the direction it's currently going, is that of supporting the book, keeping from falling under the Axe. At the same time you can express your feeling for it's directions to Marvel...but that's just me :)

I may pick up issue 3, then, but it'll take a lot to lay my reservations to rest. Maybe it's better in execution than in concept, but the idea of Alpha Flight being a Marvel humor book chills me in places that sunlight can't warm. Lobdell's done some good stories on other books, but Giffen he's not.

I especially fear of how Northstar's sexuality would be protrayed...*shudder*

Maybe it'll segue into a more serious style later on, but what I saw in issue #1 didn't hook me. *shrug*

I'm an open-minded person. My current opinion of the character may change eventually, but for the moment I see nothing in this new character that makes her stand out. If she is going to use the name of an existing character at least have a take on it that is as interesting as the origional.

Just the fact that she's CanadAsian makes her stand out to me. Haven't seen that yet in a comic. Besides, she's the first spunky-new-ingenue that hasn't been taken under Logan's wing yet. Here's to hoping that remains a trend!

I agree the first series shouldn't have ended. If they had stuck with the original concept and not made so many changes it might have lasted.

Or it might have stagnated. Change isn't inherently bad, but bad changes always suck doubly, first because the readers won't care and secondly because the writers that come after won't care, so you wind up with shrinking readership and a mess of retcons.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since the end of vol 2 sadly. I went back and got most of vol 2 but haven't gone back to get vol 1 yet.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

My friend had the issue when Puck was restored to regular height by the Firefountain. That was the first issue I ever read.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Tough one. Uhhh. Sasquatch or Puck. Don't make me choose!

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Uhm Manbot. He was a tool literally and figuretively.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Master seemed pretty badass though I'm going by him holding off Kang in Avengers.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

I kinda liked Scramble really think more could have been done with him. So as for unused potential Lionel Jeffries definitely

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Any storyline with the X-men where its not all about AF getting their butts handed to them.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Puck's daughter. Oh yeah.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

I'd say Puck. Did he ever officially lead? He's got the experience in my opinion.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Haven't read enough to have an opinion I don't think.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

See above.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Well I prefered the art at the end of vol 2 than to the start but vol 3 is blowing them out of the water.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Again no opinion.

I forgot my dreamteam. Actually it would probably be something like the Alpha Flight we saw in early Exiles. Wolverine leading Alpha, Beta and Gamma Flights with Mac and Heather running Dept H. I love the idea of it being more than just a team, Hydra but good or something. The one problem they had was John Proudstar (the original Thunderbird) as Shaman.

So basically everyone working in different levels within a Dept H that works. You got Aurora and Northstar for long distance scouts, Marrina for aquatic work, Shaman and Talisman running the mystic side, Puck as the combat specialist.....I could go on all day.

My first memory was Mac/Guardian getting killed when his suit detonated. I was definately disturbed and bummed out...we had only just started!

Mac/Guardian though I love em all...

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Mr Jerry Jaxon ofcourse... anyone that can partly engineer Macs death is worthy of hating the most.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

The original team including Wolverine, Diamond Lil and Nemesis!

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Aurora

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Guardian past... Sasquatch is now... Hmmm future?

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I used to belong to Tonto's list years ago about the time AF v.2 started or so, but real life got in the way. It's good to be around AF fans again :)

You know...it's been a while since I read my AFs and with this new series out I am gona get started again. Anyway, when thinking about favorite storylines I forgot one other that I loved very much and that was the one when Forge and Madison Jeffires merged to make the ForgeBox. That was a very cool concept with the two of them together and I would have loved to have seen more of that. Also, Diamond Lil's cancer storyline was good, too.

The beginning of Mantlo's run wasn't bad, say up through the Sasquatch resurrection. The concept of Manikin wasn't bad, and was at least an original power. Persuasion was also a good creation, but the problem with her is the power. Its hard to have controllers as good guys. They either need to be limited lik Karma is to two people at once, or there always has to be new reasons why their power isn't working.
Mantlo's basic problems were:
whining as characterization. a single issue or two of ROM is quite readable, but did you ever try reading it in bulk: 75 issue of poor me and my lost humanity. His Hulk was the same, and the team book of Alpha only gave him variety in what people can whine about in the same issue.

His outright destruction of characters: Snowbird, Scramble, Deadly Ernest, Clementine etc.

The disdain for Byrne's creations that was evident in the stories, leading up to the new "better" team in #51.

But if you judge Mantlo solely on Alpha, you are limiting yourself. His prolific run on Micronauts was classic.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Actually I just started with volumn 3....

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

Ah! Now this is funny because I've known of AF for years and even more so since right before the big JP coming out issue. The Star Bulletin in Honolulu wrote a huge article up about 'Marvel Comics coming out of the closet'. (that was the title of the article if I remember rightly) I was already a comic book fiend by then and saw the article and read it. This was me. "Holy s**te he's hot!"

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Northstar...I love what happened when Kia Asamiya got her hands on him.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Eh...dunno yet. I'm still catching up on back history/issues.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

See: #4

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

See: #4 again.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

vol3 issue 2 had me cracking up.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Both Puck's, the twins, the Hudsons, Walt

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Walt! Hey the guy is willing to go into a bet where he runs the risk of becoming a sex slave for a year if he losses. I like that in a man...or woman for that matter...that and I have a thing for bespecled, slightly older scientist types.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

From what I do know I'd have to say Guardian...every team needs by the book types.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

I am loving Scott's run right now. =)

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Larry Hama never got his hands on this book did he?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Henry's stuff is amazing. I like the slight anime look to the thing.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Rob Leifield...who let him out?

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be

Hmmm...dunno yet.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since the end of the first series

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

First memory was from that Wolverine four issue limited. I forgot what it was called, but the covers were in a thicker cardboard. I thought the team was really cool/different. This was my first exposure to X-Men as well.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Marrina

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Manakin or Witchfire, or Goblyn. Three way tie.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Master

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Marina's "mate"

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Hopefully the current one!

Northstar & Aurora, Flashback, Sasquatch, Puck 1 & 2, MML, Marrina, Snowbird, Persuasion, Shaman, Windshear.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Alpha Flight v1 #1... back in 1983.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

My family was taking a camping trip to Texas to see relatives. I was allowed to buy a few comics to take along as reading material. I got to pick them out, and then my mom hid them away until we left. I remember being excited about finding #2 and #3 while we were on the trip. (I got all my comics from a drugstore in those days. It was a little behind.)

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Heather. Definitely Heather, particularly as done by Byrne.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Don't really have one, actually. Had to think about it for a while though.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Delphine Courtney. Disguising "herself" as Guardian was one heck of a move.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Don't really have one.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

This is a hard one. A toss-up between v1 #11-13, which has the death of Guardian, and v1 #105... the Bachelor Party issue.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

I love Byrne's lineup. Byrne's lineup plus Heather in a suit (I originally disliked that, but I've gotten used to it) would be ideal.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Heather. (To quote Denys O'Neill "If I was in the same universe as her, I'd inevitably fall in love with her.")

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Mantlo

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Scott Clarke, I think.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Mantlo taking over the title with v1 #29.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Scrambler and that one thing he became.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Around the time of Snowbird's baby.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
The new team and the originals combined! :D

1. Since Alpha Flight # 1 (1983). But not continuously.

2. Again the aforementioned AF # 1. The first scene with Mac in the Canadian Parliament building contemplating the shutdown of Dept. H. I loved the idea of a Canadian superhero and still do.

3. That has kind of changed over the years. Originally it was Guardian (loved that costume and battlesuit) and Box (loved the idea of a "homemade" superhero as Roger Bochs seemed to have assembled his first Box robot in his living room surrounded by old issues of popular mechanics and his T-squares. It all seemed fantastic and realistic all at the same time. Now, I think Heather, Puck and Sasquatch are my favourites.

4. Northstar, he was always too arrogant and selfish.

5. Don't really have one. Possibly "The Master" purely for nostalgic reasons as he was Alpha's first real villian in their original series.

6. Really hated the story where Roger Bochs turned evil and insane. That was just totally wrong and out of character. I wish they could bring him back as John Byrne had written him.

7. That would probably be the first one where Mac gets led into the Alpha Flight ambush and is unexpectedly killed. Alpha Flight # 12 (first series) totally blew my mind when I first read it. Too bad it turned out to be all a cop-out with later writers.

8. By dream team I assume you mean writer/artist. That would be the return of John Byrne or Scott Lobdell (in second place).

9. Heather of course.

10. Heather again.

11. The talented Mr. Byrne.

12. Hard to say because Alpha has had more bad writers than good ones. Possibly the James Hudnell run. But Bill Mantlo and Fabian Nicieza had their stinkers too.

13. John Byrne Mike Mignola David Ross Jim Lee and whoever drew #102-105 (I don't have the books in front of me to check).

14. Gerry Talaoc.

15. Insanity/Death of Roger Bochs.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
I picked up issue #1 Vol.1 long ago at a 7-11 after cutting some lady's lawn. Best money I ever spent. The Slurpee I bought didn't have as lasting an effect.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Fighting with my little brother about who actually owned the meager Alpha Flight collection. I think we had 1-25. After that I had a long hiatus. I actually thought they had been canned until I found issue 100 on a newstand many years later.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?
My favorite is Shaman. I love the mysticism he's surrounded in. Also the fact that he among all of the Alphans was the most human to me. He's the only one who ever asked if he was worthy of being a superhero. Everyone else, exception Heather, just seemed to take to it naturally. I liked Shaman's struggle and inner turmoil.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Manbot. Was he a robot? was he a man? No he was a Manbot! That and he never did a damned thing!

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Gotta agree with all of the Dream Queen fans out there, though the Master is a very close second.

6. Who is your least favourite Alpha Flight villain?
Pink Pearl! Couldn't get my head (or arms) around her character.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Gotta go with the Dream Queen Saga, though the Infinity stuff where Alpha was actually considered an A list team always impressed me too.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Alpha to me will always be Heather, Sasquatch, Puck, Shaman, Northstar, Aurora, and Snowbird. I could live with Flex, Persuasion, or Talisman, but that's about it. I did like Radius as well, though he wasn't much of a team player. The newbies I'm not sold on yet.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Heather! Hot red head with the brains to get us off the island (no powers there) or at least allow us to survive on love and coconuts!!!!!!!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather! Hands down the best leadership skills!

11. Who is your favourite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne. He's the one who hooked me. Others have been trying to shake me off that hook with no success.

12. Who is your least favourite Alpha Flight writer?
Mantlo...yeah I'm gonna say it....Razer!

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne - his art was just clean and classic.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Duncan Rouleau - I tried I just couldn't enjoy his art. Doesn't make it bad, just makes it not my favorite.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
So many things, but bringing back Mac was probably where I'd start.

cmdrkoenig67

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since the original series in the eighties.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

1st memory was reading their guest appearance in Uncanny X-Men #120-121.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

That's a tough one...I'd have to say Heather. I like all the originals(with one exception).

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

It has to be Mac....I hate that he was brought back to life(again and again)...this really messed with the character's original death(the impact it had on the team, Heather, etc...). He has been consistantly the worst written of any of the original team.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Tha Master of the World.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Llan the Sorcerer....bleuch!

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Walter's death by Snowbird and the team's search for his soul in the Realm of the Great Beasts.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Roster: Guardian(Heather....Mac would be Dept H director), Northstar, Puck, Sasquatch, Snowbird and Talisman.

Creative team: John Byrne/John Byrne and Terry Austin

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Northstar.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather...she fit so well into the role....Mac never wanted the job, while Heather enjoyed it.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

The best ever...John Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

James Hudnall...sorry James.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

You have to ask? John Byrne.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

The fellow who illustrated most of the Hudnall issues(I can't recall his name at the moment)

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be

There are lot's of things....bringing back Mac is one, but I'd have to say: Puck's origin(being possessed by a demonic sorcerer, that made him a Little person....ugh!).

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since their first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #120.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight?....

At the end of Uncanny X-Men #109, James MacDonald Hudson makes a reference to bringing Alpha Flight back with him when he next tangles with Wolverine and the X-Men. I remember wondering what this "Alpha Flight" was.

3. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight character?

Snowbird!

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Wyre.

5. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight villian?

The Great Beasts.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villian?

Can't really think of any.

7. What do you think is the best issue/story arc from Alpha Flight?

Volume #1, issue #1 -- outstanding!

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Guardian, Vindicator, Shaman, Snowbird, Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, Puck, Marrina, and Talisman. In other word, the classic team, more or less. Guess I'm just old-fashioned.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight....?

Snowbird -- she's a good huntress, and possibly not only for herself, in an emergency.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather Hudson -- with or without the battle suit.

11. Who is your favourite Alpha Flight writer?

John Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Fabian Niecieza, (sp?). Bill Mantlo started out with some good ideas, (Tamarind Island, Snowbird's baby), but then, he started killing off good characters and having longtime members leave; and by the time he was finished, the book was unrecognizable.

13. Who is your favourite Alpha Flight artist?

John Byrne.

14. Who is your least favourite Alpha Flight artist?

John Calimee.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight, what would it be?

Bring back Doug Thompson and Snowbird's son from the dead.

I'm an animal lover, so I wouldn't need Snowbird to hunt for me. I'd eat fruit and coconuts, and let Narya hunt for herself.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

The Hudsons, never liked them as heroes. Never liked Manbot either.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Af v1 #118-120. Hopefully v3 will beat that easily.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Puck leading Feedback, Box, Windshear, Nemesis, Zuzha, Major Mapleleaf, Shaman, Sasquatch, and Ghost Girl. I'd prefer a smaller team though, so then Puck, Feedback, Box, Windshear, and GG.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Box, he could get us off. If we're really stuck then Zuzha.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Puck.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Furman, hope Lobdell beats him

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Not gonna speak about some of the choices, each to their own:-). Feedback was Albert Louis, the gent who was chased by the Hardliners and eventually joined Alpha (#120-130 ish). He could generate electrical dopplegangers of himself.

Hey Canucklehead,

Welcome to the forum! I'm assuming you are the same Canucklehead from Moncton over at the Alpha Flight message board. Glad to see some more cross over between the two places. No way should the two communties compete, but rather provide different media for fans to enjoy the flight.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since before the second series debuted. I found my uncle's old comic collection and it was Byrne's complete run on the title. How could I not fall in love with it? I swear not even a month later, the second series was announced.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

My first memory was not really liking the characters all that much, to be honest. I mean, seriously, I was thinking "A giant monkey? A midget? A fish? A guy who wears half the Canadian flag? Are they serious?" But, then I read the books and my whole opinion changed. LOL

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Guardian, by far. He just seemed like a great mix of Spider-Man, Captain America and Iron Man. Plus, I loved the idea behind his costume's abilities. I know he's had some horrible continuity thrown his way, and I think the ramifications of that upon his character have hardly been looked at in the proper way, and hopefully Lobdell or someone will.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Without a doubt, Manikin. Oh, god, lame powers, lame origin, lame character. If bad writing was a felony, then I would hope Bill Mantlo does not live in Texas.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Master. You know, people see him as a poor man's Doctor Doom. Not so. The idea that he commands alien technology that constantly surrounds him instantly makes him unique. Kurt Busiek during his final arc on Avengers made great progress with the Master.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Toss up here. Alpha Flight's had some lame ones over the years. Pink Pearl just because. Omega because of Bill Mantlo almost making a cool character and then not delivering. Bedlam because of what it did to Mac's character and legacy. Raazor for ruining Puck. Llan the Sorcerer because I hate the idea of a "master manipulator". If Llan had so much time on his hands to manipulate, why doesn't he just manipulate the world into thinking him their master? Why bother with Alpha Flight? Llan = lame.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Tough one. Unfortunately, Alpha Flight hasn't had too many spectacular arcs to reflect their great cast, but the ones they have had are tough to decide over. I suppose I'm going to have to go with Alpha Flight (vol. 1) issues 11-12. Just great stuff there and the ending was heartbreaking.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

The originals. What can I say? I'm a traditionalist. Guardian (Mac), Puck, Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Shaman, and Marrina. Of course, you can throw Heather in there if you want, since Marrina's still technically dead (though she was seen in a stasis pod on the Master's ship during Busiek's last arc on Avengers). Also, I'd take Talisman as Shaman's replacement, since that's what she was always meant to be in the first place.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

LOL What a crazy question. Puck and Sasquatch would be cool to hang out with, but, damned if Snowbird isn't fine. Yeah, I'd go with Snowbird.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

No doubt, Heather. There's really no one else it could be, which is why I was shocked Puck was shown as such a leader during volume two. Not that Puck couldn't do it (he could, of course), it's that Heather would step up before him.

Also, Byrne did a great job showing that Mac was a fine leader during his run, yet Mac simply didn't have the confidence to believe it. It was just another layer that Byrne added to these magnificent characters. If Mac gets back on the team, I can see him butting heads with Heather during leadership, which would be awesome, since they're married!

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

LOL How can anyone not say 'John Byrne'? But I'll give Seagle props for putting such a unique spin on the title.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

LOL How can anyone not say 'Bill Mantlo'? No, really...

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

John Byrne, simply because he's been the best and most consistent artist on the title. After he left, Alpha Flight was plagued with amateur artists. Scott Clark could have been great but he couldn't stick to schedule, and Duncan Rouleau was awful. If Clayton Henry can stay on the book, he might just trump Byrne...

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Duncan Rouleau. I remember thinking after Marvel announced he would be taking art duties, 'Great, this book is as good as cancelled'. And it was. Rouleau's part of the reason X-Factor couldn't be saved. An artist should fit the tone of the book. Rouleau's style is not well suited for Alpha Flight.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Bill Mantlo's entire run. LOL. I mean, seriously, that way I knock off so many birds with one stone: Mac's convoluted comebacks, Sasquatch as a woman, Northstar and Aurora being elves, Manikin, and so many others.

Welcome crozack!

I agree with out about Clayton, he is amazing. I however quite liked Duncan's AF work, I found he was a great story teller with his art. I can see how his style wouldn't sit well with everyone though.

I think that of all of the artists I've ever seen on AF, I liked Byrne, Rouleau, and Henry the most. Their various styles just sit well with me. I even liked Rouleau's Puck, and especially his Heather, Flex, and Manbot.

crozack

You know, okay, maybe I was being unfair to Rouleau. His Puck was very well done (loved the moustache), but there were times were his scenes were so irratic. I remember sometimes looking at characters and scenes where one eye was freakishly bigger than the other, or their posture made them look they had severed spines.

But, at others (and I think Alpha Flight (vol 2) issue 12 is a good example of some of his finest stuff) he crafted some very well done stuff. The caption of Sasquatch holding Radius out of the way of death was heartwrenching.

That being said, on a title that needed an exceptional artist for people to take notice, Rouleau wasn't what was needed, so maybe I was just angry at that fact. I've read the interview on the site and he seems like a really nice guy with genuine love for the characters.

Welcome, crozack! :D Always glad to see another traditionalist here! What do you think of the new series? I like some of the new characters, (Zuzha, Yukon Jack), but I'm always glad to see the originals show up.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
since the start

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
COOL!

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Feedback-just a guy who gets caught up in happenings that are bigger than him.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Newer version of Manikin, don't mess with what works. making him evolve or devolve was silly.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Scrambler-just so creepy in a reanimator kind of way

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Caliber-super cool suit with no clue how to really use it in the long run. big let down.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
I liked most of the Alpha Flight stories, even the bad ones. The one that stands out is a well drawn "what if" with wolverine as the leader of Alpha Flight after the old x-men die due to Northstar keeping a secret.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
So many of them after the first run, not sure. Tho anyteam with purple girl on it doesnt hurt

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
I think Cable said it best that his father, Cyclops was the man to help you out in a situation like that. Since he's not a choice then how about Wyre. Smart guy with lots of survival training. Tho Talisman is a cutie!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Put them up against some of the main stream villians for a change. Red Skull tries for what he thinks is an easier target than America, Canada. Another shot at Doom. Go another round with Loki, stuff like that.

Didn't the Fabe bring Mac back for real the first time around? And then Furman in the No Future arc?

To my count, Mac has only returned from the dead twice. Once, during Building Blocks. Then, during No Future. I don't count the clone, for obvious reasons. So I honestly don't see how some people have said that Mac has returned from the dead soooooo many times.

I did Fabe handled Mac's first return very well. Ditto for Furman. So I don't roll my eyes when I hear mention of his return. However, I DID roll my eyes during that disastrous Austen issue of Uncanny where Mac ALMOST died. Though I did find Walter's reaction to it funny: "Maybe we should just call it a day and give Heather the bad news."

kozzi24
08-25-2004, 11:34 AM
Nicienza should have created his own backstory for Mac's return rather than trying to incorporate the Qurlns or whaterever from Jupiter (or wherever). That aspect of the story really failed, because NONE of the then-current Alpha said anything even remotely like, "Fool me once..."
I personally don't consider that Mac to be a real one. Courtney did come from Roxxon to begin with.

Major Mapleleaf Jr
08-26-2004, 10:48 AM
You just made me think of something, Kozzi, when you alluded to Roxxon possibly manipulating the circumstances surrounding Mac's first return. Was it before or after his return that Alpha Flight went establishment again?

If you mean the time Courtney came as Mac, that was abefore the govn't started funding them again. That happend about 4 issues later.

DelBubs

I think he's referring to the second time, just after the 'Building Blocks' arc. FabNics first four issues. Mac comes back from Roxxon again, but as was pointed out, why didn't any one say "Hang about, been here before".

Major Mapleleaf Jr
08-26-2004, 02:35 PM
My point in asking, actually, wasn't to ask the question "Why didn't anyone point out that we've done this before?", it was to ask the question "Isn't Mac's REAL return from the dead, seemingly orchestrated by Roxxon, a little convenient just as the team decides to start working for the government again?"

Furman's run, especially, had me wondering if perhaps Alpha Flight hadn't bitten off more than they could chew. The whole situation with Hagon's Bill and the Hardliners, it just seemed like the government manipulated Alpha Flight into having to enforce Hagon's Bill, something I wonder if Heather Hudson would have stood for in the past. She's shown before that she has no problem packing up and leaving with the team if they're put into a morally compromising position. So why at that point in time would Alpha Flight remain with the government?

I'm just wondering if Mac's return from the dead had anything to do with that, if perhaps the two are interconnected. Probably not, but there's a lot of subtext if you look for it (at least, I noticed it).

I don't know. I'm thinking returning from the dead once is more than enough for most folks. Just enough to tell stories about the white light at the end of the tunnel. If you keep coming back eventually folks will start thinking you're making up the part about the voice saying "Take a number!" I'm a big proponent of "dead is dead". Ressucitate if necessary, but don't exhume the body first!

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
The whole time (lol). I got it right from number one and was a solid Byrne Victim by tweleve when Mac died...erm...the first time around. I stopped for a while in college due to funds but went back and tracked down every single missed issue, re-upped my subscription and within a year it was cancelled. I looked at the V2 series, but even my local comic store didnt' get many for the shelves so I envision having to scrounge up those twenty issues too. Now, V3. Disappointing, but at least it's AF. :)

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I'd have to say it was the cover for #1. It was previewed in all the Marvel mags and Sasquatch lumbering over the bounding figure of Puck, the obviously enigmatic leader figure of Shaman (quite obviously also not in front and in the lead!). It ws jsut so cool. I think what drew me in was the clear intent to portray Native American culture and mythos as well as Canadian sensibilities, although it took me years to "get it" that Puck's code name was derived from the hockey equipment and not the Shakespearean Sprite.(lol)

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Too tough to call. Puck, Shaman and Guardian I are right up there, but the deapth of the characters made them all favorites, like a family, just like the X-Men of the Byrne/Claremont era.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Um...there's characters I know less about. I don't know any of the V2 versions, but there's been at least one baddie they've killed ...oh...a half dozen times. Let that one go.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
I loved the Master's backstory, but then I'm pretty old school. There's so many good ones, but it's gotta be the Master in the long run - the tragic villain.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
At the time, I thought the Dreamqueen arc just dragged on far too long. Her I got tired of.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight?
It's been so long since I read the old issues. I guess apart fromt he "Robo-Guardian" arc in the early issues, I'd have to say the Lionel Jefferies arc was cool. The first one. When he mutated into that huge nasty thing, that was pretty wild. But then, the quest to retrieve Saquatches sould from the Great Beast...hmmm...

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Shaman, Sasquatch, Guardian (Heather), Major Mapleleaf, Centennial, Puck, Snowbird, Diamond Lil, Flashback, Wildchilde, Box, Smart Alec, Persuasion and Nemesis. Essentially, make each of them AF members but split the group into "Action Teams" specific to any given mission.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Talisman. All the food and shelter could easily be provided by her magic and she's hot too. (lol)

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Shaman.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne, hands down.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
No idea. Were there bad ones?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne again.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
They were all pretty good.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Judd being a dwarf due to his posession by the deamon Raazer. I always liked that each character was internally troubled and burdened with his or her own internal conflict(s). Jean-Paul had homosexuality and an aversion to being touched. Jeane-Marie had split personalities. Sasquatch was stuck (way back when) as a huge orange beast and Judd suffered from dwarfism and was in love with Heather. To me, these were enough to keep the characters human and real. The Raazer introduction took away something special from the character and sort of erased the notion that little people can accomplish things spectacular, which I found much more interesting.

Nice to have you, hope you don't hide in the shadows of the cupboard too much :)

Hey Ben,
Long story short I found a box of comics in the garbage that contained Alpha Flight & X-Men comics & it reminded me of when I first started collecting Alpha :D I sold the X-men & since the Alpha issue's were in great shape I decided to start collecting them again for fun,I haven't collected comics for over 10 years but I thought I go back to my teenage years & do the Alpha Flight series,Vol.1,Vol.2 & Vol. 3
I spend most of my time collecting Hockey cards now but I'll be adding a Wantlist/Tradelist of the Alpha Flight issue's I still need 8) hopfully someone here can help me out with the specific issue's I need to complete my "sets" :)

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Since the beginning of Volume 3.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
I think it was a issue of Classic X-Men that reprinted X-Men Vs Alpha Flight, I thought that the Flight would be down for the count (at the time I was a major X-Fan).

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Sasquatch

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Geomancer, as I know very little about hi,

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

I think Sasquatch is doing a great job at the moment, but from what I've read of V1 - Heather is the better leader.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Lobdell or Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Dont have one yet

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
I'm not too up on artists but I like the current "animated" look of Alpha Flight.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
As 12.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Alpha Flights past - nothing. What I would undo is The Masters death in Avengers. At the time I thought it was cool, but now I think he should have survived, crawled off and be waiting in the shadows.

7. My problem with this arc is that Hudnall seemed to run out of steam towards the end of it. Some glaring continuity glitches, even in the same issue. I think the last issue of the arc highlights this best. I also really enjoyed Hud's writing, and think it would have gone over better without Calimee's art to cheapen it. Like Del said, he kinda ran outa steam at the end, but I'm guessing that was after Marvel told him he was out and had to wrap certain things up.

Hi everyone! :)

Yeah, Hundall did run out of steam toward the end, but I do think it was because the Marvel ptb forced him off the book early.

I read in an interview that he planed to make the storyline lead up to issue 100! It could have been a really great epic....

From what I heard of his plans, his aborted Zietgiest(sp?) and Master/Marrina stories would have been great too.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since vol 1 issue 43, waaay back in 1986

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

Picking up that same issue in a 7-11 in Toronto as a 14-year old who had never been into comics before and being amazed to see a battle between Alpha Flight, Mesmero and the Sentinels in the middle of Expo 86 in Vancouver, which I had just come back from that summer.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Tough one, but for many reasons I would have to go with Northstar.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Yukon Jack, because I can't stand garbled speech patterns in comics.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Another tough one, but why don't we go with The Great Beasts as a group?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Probably just about anyone from the Furman run (Carcass?? Wrecking Crew?? yuck)

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arc from Alpha Flight?

Undoubtedly vol 1 issue 12

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Northstar, Aurora, Puck, Heather, Madison Jeffries, Sasquatch, Talisman, Snowbird, Diamond Lil

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Sasquatch (most resourceful, most meat if it came to cannibalism  )

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

I always thought Puck (do I have to start saying Puck I?) deserved a shot at it.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Furman

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Broderick. Furman and Broderick are probably the main reason my AF collection is incomplete, I have so little interest in tracking down the last few issues. To be fair to Broderick, pencillers aren't solely responsible for the look of a book, so I guess the inker and colorists from those issues deserve equal disdain.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Mac's resurrection, with Snowbird's continuity defying resurrection in the pages of Wolverine a close second, because it basically ruined the backstory of Sasquatch as well.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
I was serious about collecting AF back when they first got their own series, but my attention to the following volumes has been sporadic at best.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
My cousin was down visiting from Labrador, and he and I used to bike all over the area looking for new comics. At a mini-mart up a LARGE hill we found one of those old spinning comic racks filled with untouched goodies. I picked up X-Men 171-173 (and to this day love Paul Smith's art)... but as much as I love Paul's art, it was seeing a Canadian team standing large among the Marvel stalwarts that grabbed my attention. Joy. Adulation. Alpha Flight and the X-Men were the first two series I cared enough to buy every month -- and with the X-Men it was because the artist would turn out to be one of the biggest influences on my style. :)

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Guardian -- Dr. James MacDonald Hudson.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Major Maple Leaf; it started off as a one-off joke/jab at Captain Canuck, a nationalistic superhero created by Richard Comely, and has sense become a (very bad) running joke. I have more respect for Bob and Doug MacKenzie.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The Master. He has so much untouched potential.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Calibre. Not that he's a bad creation, per se; he served his very limited purpose. But there's really no future potential there without a massive re-tooling.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
Whoooooo. Toughie. Most of the stuff from the first 12 issues really set the overall feel for me, so I'd have to go with something from there. Perhaps Northstar and Aurora's encounter with Ernest; the writing was finely layered. At the time I was oblivious to it, but in hindsight the hints at JP's sexuality are painfully obvious. Excellent all-ages writing.

Either that or the first issue, which was a classic "big bang" opening.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
The team from Vol 1, issue 1. There were so many unexplored story arcs with that group that it boggles my mind. The character interactions could have been superb. That and (as I often harp upon the point) they were extremely well designed, utilizing design elements that have provided the core for the genre's most iconic characters. I believe that the original team has that potential if treated with respect and utilized to their fullest.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Puck. The man's been everywhere and done everything. Follow his lead, and you'd likely live in comfort. Hmmmm... Shaman's probably a better choice, on second thought. Not only is he familiar with survival techniques, but his combination of magic and medical knowledge could provide a much safer, more comfortable existence.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
As written? Heather. She was portrayed as extremely competent. As a literary choice? Mac. His character makes for a better plot device, and is more representative of (certain elements of) the national identity.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Paul Smith. (He did the Alpha/X-Men mini-series where Loki was involved)

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Whoooo! Another toughie! I'd have to go with one of two things:
1) Puck/Raazor: what a freakin' pothole in the road that was! Not only does it contradict prior established information about the character, but it provided for some of the most ridiculous plot twists in the team's history, and managed to take some of the dignity away from Puck. He was unique in being a super-hero who was genuinely afflicted with what is termed as a disability.

2) The death of Guardian: It made for an incredible story, but killing off central characters is, generally speaking, bad for an ongoing serialized tale. Part of the long-term success of the big iconic characters is how recognizeable they've remained over the years, and this in turn projects onto any teams they may be involved with. Gacking Guardian was a bold story choice at the time, but would have been better served as the end of a mini-series rather than the beginning of an ongoing series.

For Alpha to earn the kind of prominence that has gone to the Justice League, Avengers, etc, they need a stable cast of recognizeable, iconic characters filling archetypical roles. To that end, as good a story as the death of Guardian was, it was a tactical error.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Oh, about the mid-20s I recall it was right after they changed the title logo for the first time. I got out of it for a long time but got back in just before issue#100

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

The Raazer issue, which didn' turn me off suprisingly enough:P

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Roger Bochs. He and Puck made the team stand out a lot more from the rest of the books. What Mantlo ended up doing to him was a crime

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Murmur, she was nothing but Persuasion and Aurora merged together into one very annoying *****

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Diablo's appearance in 103& 104. I don't know if he was acting out of character, but he was just the most fun baddie the series has seen.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Headlok, his whole screwing with Aurora story arc was treading over old ground. And Jean Marie just deserves a break.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

"El Equipo Primero" the Diablo story arc that was fun and a slightly different use for the team.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

The current "Uncanny Alpha Flight" as Scott refers to them is what the team should be (plus Squatch)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Nemesis, sure she'd be annoying, but that would probably do a better job of keeping me sane than anyone else could.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather, hands down

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

What Scott Lobdell has done with his stories has always been interesting, though I'd like to see more with the originals.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Simon Furman, he needs to stick with writing giant robots.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Clayton Henrey without a doubt has been the best artist the've had on the book in ages.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

That's a toss up between Darian Currasco's stint near the end of Vol.1 and Scott Clarke's run on Vol.2

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

while not techincally in Alpha history, Marina's death in the Avengers.

Hey jay042, maybe we can form the Simon Furman Anti-Fan Club! When I saw people on this board were fans of Furman I decided to go try to find the last few issues of Vol 1, just in case. Uggh! The Anti-Guard? Hard-Liners? The throw-away supervillain team? Not to mention the awful dialogue.

Nope, I'm firm in my Anti-Furman stance. Tell me there was a worse writer! (OK besides Mantlo).

The Following is the official forum Alpha Flight Questionnaire. This automatically gets sent to new members. I would also like for existing members to take a minute to fill this out, as it is a great way to see the interests of fellow Alpha Flight Fans.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? Since volume 1, #1. Couldn't take anymore after # 55. Picked up the Snowbird/God-War issue, the last Mantlo issue, and the first part of the Hudnall DreamQueen story, but didn't come back to it consistently until # 96 or so. Unfortunately, damage had already been done, and wasn't being undone. Stopped again around the Wrecking Crew story-arc. Have all twenty issues of volume 2, #s 2 - 12 of volume 3, plus the 1st tpb.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? Uncanny X-Men# 109. Solid story, all the way around. If recent, what was your first reaction? n/a

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character? Shaman

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character? WHITMAN KNAPP

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain? Toss-up between THE MASTER,
THE GREAT BEASTS, and PESTILENCE

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? SCRAMBLE (by far), but The Auctioneer, The Manimator, Scourge, and Razor all tie for a close second. Hope I didn't miss any other bad characters.

7. What do you think is the best issue/story-arch from Alpha Flight? Without a doubt, AFV1#s 23 and 24.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? Tom DeFalco, writer-co-plotter/John Byrne, co-plotter-penciller-inking-assist/Morales, inker/whoever lettered and colored volume 3/Roger Stern, editor

Characters: Shaman, Walt/Sasquatch, Snowbird, Talisman, Judd/Puck, Aurora, Northstar, Agent K

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
This does take comic characters a bit too far

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? Shaman, with Sasquatch

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? Tough one because this is the most problematic creative element, but still will give Byrne his proper respect. ADDED 3/29/06: James Hudnall does a fantastic job bringing back the classic characters while weaving interesting stories out the ashes of the terrible Mantlo run.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? MANTLO

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? Clayton Henry is now tied with Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? Mignola, Talaoc, Ross, Lee, just about everybody else

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? I would have stopped publication of the ALPHA FLIGHT series with vol. 1, # 28 and not used them in other books until someone wrote them with some respect and consistency.

. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I started with the original run by Byrne... and continued just before Mantlo left the series.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

When they were introduced in X-Men and briefly shown in their public identities. I remember thinking they had cool names.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Madison Jeffries

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Whitman Knapp!

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

I hate to admit it, because he was created by Mantlo, but I thought Bedlam was a great menace.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Pink Pearl

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Vol 1 iss. 13 - 28... from where the team has to deal with Guardian's death, right up to Byrne's departure.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Mr. Jeffries
Northstar
Aurora
Vindicator (Heather)
Sasquatch
Puck
Snowbird
Me (Lol)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Well, being a guy, Aurora, Heather or Snowbird would work equally well!

Heather as Vindicator

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Byrne, hands down

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Mantlo

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Byrne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Oh god-- the guy who came over with Mantlo from the Hulk. That was some crappy ass art!

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Only one? Puck being made into the container for Razor. Almost too many to mention! Most lately, Wolverine offing Northstar! I would've prefered NS to have killed Logan. Someone really should...

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? I remember buying Alpha Flight vol. 1 #1 on the way to school in sixth grade. I did not collect the entire run, but I have been slowly hunting down the entire first run over the past 5-10 years.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? I remember the ads before Alpha Flight vol. 1 #1 was actually released. At that point they were still a mystery to me.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character? PUCK (Eugene)

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character? Wyre

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain? THE MASTER,

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? ROK

7. What do you think is the best issue/story-arch from Alpha Flight? vol. 1 #12

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? I am assuming you mean team member line up...
Puck
Guardian
Heather
Sasquatch
Aurora
Shaman
Snowbird
Talisman
Diamond Lil
Madison Jefferies/Box
Wild child

With a full functional Beta and Gamma program:
Flex
Murmur
Radius
Puck2
Yukon Jack
Murmur
Manikin
Persuasion
Flashback
Smart Alec
Gateway
Goblyn

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)? They are comic characters.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? Puck

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? Byrne was definitely the "Sean Connery" of Alpha Flight writers and artists.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? Whoever it was that did that crazy sorcerer crap.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? Byrne set the bar high, but there have been a lot of decent artists since (Henry, Broderick, Lee, Clark)

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? Calimee (spelling)?

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? Although I think some of the stuff following Byrne's run was ridiculous I would not change it. You gotta take chances to see what works. Many complain about volume 2, but I didn't see it that bad. Likewise volume 3, it was not the greatest, but I appreciated that someone was taking another chance with Alpha Flight.

Welcome to both Darkstar and jemini169! Don't mind the mould growth in the corner of the cupboard, it's a science experiment.

I agree with you jemini169 about not wanting to change anything in AF history. It's done, it's part of what has developed with the characters, lets just go from there. I also agree about enjoying the last two versions of AF. I really enjoyed volume 2, and having recently re-read it, enjoyed it even more. Vol. 3 was really good as a an AF offshoot, thought strictly speaking it wasn't AF, it was ANADAF, I enjoyed it for that, just didn't like how it ended, for above reasons of not liking to ignore history.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Since #1 of Byrne's run.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight?
I wanted to get into comics, but didn't want to start in the middle of a story, so I started looking around for a #1 issue that looked interesting. About that time, Alpha Flight started up and I bought it. Little did I know that I'd need to go back and pick up odd issues of Uncanny X-Men and even Hulk and Machine Man to get the whole story, but it was worth it. I've been reading every Alpha Flight story I can get my hands on ever since.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Sasquatch.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Goblyn.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The Master.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The Brass Bishop. I had this great image in my head of what he'd be like when they finally showed him, but they ended up cheesing him all up.

7. What do you think is the best issue/story-arch from Alpha Flight?
The death of Vindicator.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Guardian (Heather)
Sasquatch
Puck
Northstar
Aurora
Shaman
Snowbird

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Snowbird. Yowza.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Heather.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
JB.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bill Mantlo.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
JB.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
At the time, I hated Mignola. Now that he's probably my favorite comics artist ever, I blame the inking and coloring for ruining his work on AF. I'd love to see him work on the team again if he inked his own stuff and had a competent colorist. So, to answer the question, I'm gonna have to go with... who was the dude during Hudnall's sorceror storyline? [Edit: Calimee! That's the guy!] Ick.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Bill Mantlo's entire run. Too broad? Puck's a tall guy with an evil spirit. Close runner-up: Northstar and Aurora are elves.

Actually, the 'elves' story was retconned later on. They are full blooded human mutants, who just HAPPEN to have pointy ears.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
X-men introduction, the first run up to 55 or so? Right after Roger Bochs death, I left, then collected part of the 2nd run, and some of the latest run.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Seeing this cool team fighting the X-men. I was a big Wolvie fan, but liked Cyclops as well, and Mac had a little bit of both. Kinda like FF mixed with X-men! Oh yeah, and John Byrne was what made it cool, followed everything he did.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Of what's been written? Mac as Guardian. The first twelve issues made me really respect and want to be responsible like him.

Of what I would want to be written? BOX. Much potential there. Bryne had something there with Roger Bochs that I would've liked to see more of.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Any re-birth of Mac. Let him die. I miss him, but leave him dead.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
The dysfunctiality of the team...they were their own worst enemy.
But for a "real" enemy: Jerry Jaxon's Omega Flight

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Pink Pearl

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
The first 12 (13 really) issues. Wow.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
The ORIGINAL with BOX (roger bochs version)
Guardian
Puck
Sasquatch
Aurora
Northstar
Shaman
Snowbird
Heather

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Puck. I bet he could tell some stories.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
Mac and Heather. Father and Mother.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
Bryne

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
scott lobdell

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Bryne

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Prolly someone that worked on the arcs I never bought...

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Bringing Mac back.

collecting, hmm, this sounds bad, but i don't collect, i've been given a near compleat set, (color xeroxes of most of the olders issues), then i lost interest after vol 2 was canceled

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
seeing jim lees art work - back when i was trying to break into the comic book field, a friend of mine, Jason Johnson, and i had the same goal, so we helped eachother to: get our art skills to a professional level, gain a much more compleat and current understanding of the ins and outs of the industry, and to push ourselves and eachother to keep getting better., it was jason that introduced me to the master's work, Jim Lee, starting with alpha flight, then punisher, then x men. jason and i were hired by jim lee personally, at nearly the same time. image didn't even know that we not only knew eachother , let alone the fact we 'coincidentally' were hired in the same week.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
sasquach, (i cant spell), hes also my fav to draw and ink, at the time of alpha flight, i was really into doing: liquid metal shine, long hair, and what i thought was going to get me noticed by wizard, using textures to create shadows, instead of the standard hatch lines. and no one noticed, oh well

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
manbot, i mean he's a joke, a box wtih a head - actually the one i hated the most, mesmero, just look at him; a purple cape, orange and purple spandex jumpsuit, and most hatted of all.. the spiral on his forhead! that was hard to do!! if only i had kept that 'spiralgram' thingy from when i was a kid, you know, the thing that had different circular pieces of plastic, that would be spun around by different color pens, creating neat o looking spiral patterns.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
when they engage eachother, cause those are the hardest battles to win, if they win they lose, so how to win?

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
mesmero, i hated doing that spiral on his forhead, and come on, purple - um, i guess i answered this in question four

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? hmm, the whole puck, heather, guardian love triangle was soo lame, mainly because that same idea/storyline has been done to death a thousand times over, again and again in (probably) every comic book ever made, serriously. the best? usually whatever im into at the moment

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? since i tend to see things from the inside - out, id say, jim lee penciling, or at least storyboarding, me inking (of course), and a three year story arc written by; burne/jones/claremont (hey, he does come up with some good ideas for new characters and how to introduce them) /and topped off with dedication and endless hard work and effort given by everyone involved!!!

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island) hmm, tough choice.. not really, Heather! after all, the version scott did, had the likeness of a certan adult film actress. when i was given the first couple of images of alpha flight to ink, scott thought it proper that i understood the 'feel' of the character... so, we took a trip to a certain strip club, where she was appearing in person, where a certain someone droped a large wad of money, and he, i mean, we had her nearly to ourselves most of the night. now that left an impression.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? not sure, im not all that familiar with the majority of a f storylines.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? not sure, usually whatever i was into at the time, but in reality, steve seagle, but for personal reasons; on the 'Allerga' mini series, scott wanted me to ink him, but the staff at wildstorm said no way, after all, at that time i hadn't even inked an entire issue by myself ('still wet behind the ears'), but steve and scott 's decision to have me be inker made the differance, other wise i'd still be doing backgrounds and the occational work for someone else who was late on a deadline

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? most of them

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? jim lee, still

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? all of them! (only because the penciler, could request that i be their inker, and none of them have, boo hoo, i think that peoples opinions were tainted by scott's deadline performance. the editors at marvel knew i was reliable and could do my work in less than standard time, but, after a f , i found myself jumping from issue to issue, title to title, and have to do 'ghosting' work, that's when i ink pages in damn near the same style as the normal inker, without getting printed credit, but it ussually paid more. that ussally happened when their was a deadline crunch, or someone 'droped the ball'

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? hindsight is twenty twenty, so i would have found a way to keep scott motivated and comited, hell, since then i' ve become a decent enough penciler, so i would have spent more time developing my penciling skills at image, since i now know how to ink, i wouldn't need to be williams/garner/mcweeny/etc. ink assistant, i woud instead have been a penciling assitant to lee, portacio, and everyone else. but we can't go back in time, so i'll just have to continue being a graphic designer/web designer/ and doing the ocasionall book cover as an illustrator, in my current job at http://www.amistudios.com -where i still take pride in my work!!

1) How long Collecting?

Reading since the beginning....stopped for a long time ....Sorry

2)First Memory?

Vindicator (Mac) Bursting on the scene to capture Wolverine...I fell in love with the Costume right away....mom Made me a Halloween costume of Mac when I was 15!!!!!

3)Favorite Character?

Vindicator (Mac) sorry I love heather, but Mac is the V-MAN! You never forget your first love..

4)Least Favorite?

Windshear....never cared for the powers or the costume....never grabbed me..

5)Favorite Villian?

The Master...I know he never reached potential but a great concept...Part Dr. Doom ....Part Ras Al Ghoul

6)Least Fav Villian?

Too many to mention.....writers remember AF is not the X-men....

7)Best Storyline?

The Byrne run...I tell my kids today that Byrne's concept of the team meeting full force two or three times during a 12-14 issue run with intermingled solo/team ups of the AF heroes is still today, the best concept for writing a team book....

8)Worst Storyline?

Pick a Mantlo stryline and it may qualify....

9)Stuck on an Island?

Mac, he's the coolest Aphan ever...but being a man, perhaps Snowbird.....

10)Best Leader?

Come on, thats easy..Mac, THE Vindicator....

11)Favorite Writer?

Byrne, Hands down....He loved the characters and it showed

12)Least fav?

Not Byrne.....Scott's cool, and I liked the new version, if they wouldn't pile on the humor so much...a little more seriousness would have helped the book..the characters were pretty good...

13)Fav Artist?

Byrne....

13)Least Fav Artist?

Most of the rest....

14)Undo anything?

How about Mac's death.....OK, OK for real the Walter/Wanda Langkowski thing.....Lets put that away can we?....

Thanks for the poll, it was fun.....

Hiya V-Man, gonna say welcome to the forum here. As for your answer to fave writer, you'll probably find that is the general consensus, but Byrne loving the characters? I sincerely doubt it, he's been slightly scathing about them in interviews. However, he did create them and somhow made a large majority of us fans of AF, so can't fault him on that.

change answer 15

Mac dying in 12 I would have changed. Though it did bring Heather into the team she didnt don the suit for awhile and I felt the team really didnt have a leader like Cyclops or Captain America. Or even Reed Richards or Captain Britain- two heroes Mac sort of resembles. There could have been an easier way to bring Heather onto the team.

HappyCanuck
12-28-2005, 05:36 AM
There could have been an easier way to bring Heather onto the team.

The fact that it was so hard and took so long for her to don the suit is what, IMO, made that transition so great. If she had donned the suit in ish #14, say, that'd kill her character. SHe only donned the suit because, in her mind, she was more damsel-in-distress than a leader, and needed the power to back it up.

1. 4 or 5 years (maybe more)

2. I had issues 128 and 129 lying around the house, so I read them, and they weren't so good.

3. Centeniel, he was an interesting concept, Superman as a old man.

4. beats me.

5. Gilded Lily, she and her house just crumbled away 8) .

6. Loki, he wasn't really a good villian for AF.

7. I don't know which is the best arc because I haven't read a lot of them.

8. Every single alphan ever in one group and in the Hulkbuster armor!!!!! :D

9. Wildchild, he would be quiet and let me think of a way to get off the island (as long as he doesn't eat me).

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

11+12. don't know, haven't read alot.

13. don't have a clue.

14. Duncan Rouleau. (I don't like his noses)

15. Marrina shouldn't have quit.

Everybody seems to hate Wyre, I thought he was pretty awesome, even if he did try to kill Kyle at first. I see him as a tragic character, someone who's done truly terrible things in his past and is trying to atone for them. I felt a lot of sympathy for him, his realization of what he'd done, the tormenting memories of blood and death and screams...

Okay, let's see how many q's I can remember:

Favorite Alphan: Wild Child/Weapon Omega/Wildheart/Kyle Gibney...

Least favorite Alphan: Does Gen. Jeremy Clarke count?

Favorite Villain: 1. Wyre, even though he didn't stay a villain. I think his powers are not only great, they're also unique, something fairly rare in a world full of super-humans. Sure, 98% of mutants can fly and shoot energy beams, but how many can kill you with their razor-sharp hair?

2. Lady Deatshtrike also got her start in Alpha Flight. (As a villain, she first appeared as a character in Daredevil) She later fought Puck and Wolverine in 1937 Spain due to a stupid request she made of Gateway to take her to the place he was "gazing on", a pic of him and Puck in 1937 Guernica, right before the Nazi attack.

Least favorite Villain: 1. Any demons, sorcerors, I'm a Magiphobe! (Llan, Dreamqueen, etc)..

2. Rok was pretty worthless, but they didn't exactly give him much to work with, one issue and an army of children....

3. The Secret Empire, how I hate the Secret Empire...

Favorite Storyline: Bloodlines in Alpha Flight 115-117

mos_def
01-02-2006, 01:35 AM
was that the Wolverine issue where the Nazis hung Lady Deathstrike and she gets out of it by enlarging her neck-I thought that ish was awesome.

That was Wolverine vol 2#35-38. She also lost her arm to a tank thanks ter her clumsy "allies"...Yuriko-Sama didn't seem quite so honorable in that storyline...I kinda lost respect for her when she "questioned" that kid...

I agree with zekethegreat, Wildchild would be great {if he didn't decide to eat me}, but he does have one more advantage: survival skills, be it in arctic tundra, deep forest, or urban jungle, that boy knows how to stay alive...He might even make friends with some of the local animals, he even led a wolf pack for a while in the Yukon, he was doing quite well 'till, Wolvie came and killed the pack to get at him... (Marvel Comics Presents #51-53)

darc_light

How did I first learn of Alpha Flight? When I first saw Wildchild.

If I could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history?...Wildheart's regression back to Wildchild, though that would still leave him with an undeserving Aurora...Thankless Wench! I still think Shard was best, but that was doomed from the beginning, she wasn't born yet and was already dead!. Still, it's funny to think of little holo-mutant hybrids running around...

I'd also get rid of all those nude and thong shots of Kyle   ...I like the guy, but not like that...

Favorite artist/writer? John Byrne, he created Wildchild after all, too bad he didn't give him good character development.

Least favorite artist: Broderick
Why? Kyle in a thong, Kyle naked, Wyre naked, Mannikin naked (All three of him), Aurora naked, Witchfire naked... He also made Kyle look..strange, his chin was to big, his nose was to big... He looked like Dick Tracey (Comic strip version, not Warren Beatty)with long hair...

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight? Uh... October 7th, 2005. Please note, I currently have the Bryne run and scattered issues of other writers after Bryne.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction? I actually got introduced to Alpha Flight when someone applied on an online RPG with Snowbird and later found another one with Sasquatch. Both were A/U and mutants, however. I got curious and went to find out about them and upon finding places like AF.net, scope out Ebay.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character? Currently? Despite my raving and defending of Sassy, my favorite's Bryne!Judd. But since we know that Judd survives, we have to root for Mr. Fuzzy.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character? Well, I'm not as familiar as I should be with the post Bryne run... from what I've gleamed, I'm not too keen on Bill Mantlo (and because I cannot remember how to spell his name, and I hate C+P, and because it's funnier, I shall refer to him as Pig Faced Satan or PFS), Diamond Lil. Was it Manlto that made her all catty so she could get Jeffries back?

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain? The Master, though it's a shame he never developed as something on the par of Dr. Doom. I think it was the costume that just ruined his chances.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain? Uhm... maybe Pink Pearl, she kinda bored me. The Great Beasts disappointed me... I really wanted them to be major cosmic baddies... Tanaraq in Exiles made me oddly gleeful because we got to see a hint of what the Beasts could have been like.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight? I'm caught between Omega Flight and Tanaraq/Great Beasts arch.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"? The original team.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)? ... Uhm... uh.... Shaman. He has wilderness surrivial skillz.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight? I think Heather non-suit, she seemed to be more like the leader than Mac was at times. She has to wear the pants, everywhere!

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer? Bryne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer? Pig Faced Satan. Now, I did almost like the idea of Walt ending up into a girl, because yay! complexity. But uhm... that got FUBAR.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist? Clayton Henry. ZOMG, Mar is so cute!

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist? I have no idea who it was, but it was uhm.... uh... I can't remember his name, it was awful ugly art. I think it was around issues 80s and 90s?

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be? Everyone's pretty much said what should be changed, notably the last issues of AF. V3 and uhm... Pig Headed Satan's Run. I agree with the most part though there's one itty bitty quirk that's annoyed me for a while; Walt's divorce/separation. Despite it would have made Walt not quite so loveable, it would have been interesting to see to Walt as more of a emotionally neglectful husband and father. Instead, we get this hateful gold digger that squarely puts the blame of the divorce on Vernocia in an ugly display of misysgonay on PFS's behalf.

And Puck acting all mopey during PFS's run makes me cry.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I started when vol.1, iss.1 came out back in ...'84 or soemthing like that, was revolted with the initial developements, and so never got beyond something like issue 30. I have however recently started up again.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

I think I first caught a glimpse of them in some poster advertised by Marvel, where all the Marvel superheroes were standing around an artist and his desk. My first reaction is easy to remember, "cool, cool costumes".

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Mac or Sasq.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

There are a few ... like all of those vol.3 people, minus Sasq.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Wolverine and the X-Men.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

All of the others.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

So I can't chose Weapon Alpha's attempted apprehension of Wolvie or Alpha's run in with the X-Men from the pages of UXM? Well, I liked the issue in which Sasq. battled the Super-Skrull, and while I was not at all impressed with Mac's apprent death early on, I did like the first and second Omega Flight arcs.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

The original pre-vol.1 team.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)?

Would it be cheating if I chose Aurora ... her having multiple personalities and all?!

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

If there was just one Alpha Flight, membership wise, the answer would be easier coming, but Mac knows the originals better than anyone and (presuambly) had their respect, and Heather is the only other I see coming close. Of course, thats Heather after the wealth of exp. she has since accumulated. I cant understand how anyoe would have followed someone fresh off of a career of secretary, housewife, and teenage geek into a *combat situation*.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Hold on, let me check my X-Men issues ...

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

no comment

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Whoever opened vol.1 seemed to do a good job. At least they could draw Sasq. What the heck is so hard about drawing Sasq?!? The freakin' artists can draw everything else!?

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Any that can't draw Sasq.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

?!?! Bad drawings of Sasq.?

Everybody seems to hate Wyre, I thought he was pretty awesome, even if he did try to kill Kyle at first. I see him as a tragic character, someone who's done truly terrible things in his past and is trying to atone for them. I felt a lot of sympathy for him, his realization of what he'd done, the tormenting memories of blood and death and screams...

Thank you darc_light, for so long I have been the lone voice in the wild speaking out on behalf of Wyre. I too saw him as a tragic figure trying to fix his past mistakes and not simply another over-muscled goon with a big gun. I saw him as a guy trying to right his wrongs, but lacking the understanding as to how to do it by any means other than violence. After all, not everyone can be as cerebral as Professor X.

Yeah, Wyre always gets shafted, I really don't see why people dislike him, he doesn't seem a bit like Cable to me, certainly not in personality and the only times I actually saw him use a gun, (He does carry big guns), were:

1. In a flashback, about to kill one of his unfortunate "children" of the Breed
2. Shooting Kyle with a tranquilizer dart in Nemesis' lair
and
3. Shooting the ceiling above Kane and Rok to get them out of his way...

I don't even know why he carries them, his powers are enough to deal with his enemies, as the Hardliners found out when they attacked Alpha HQ, thinking they were dealing with just two women and a comatose Manniken. :) After witnessing Mannikens "Re-birth", Wyre seemed to have had some kind of epiphany, talking about changing his ways and his outlook on life, but, Alpha got shut down soon after.

Yeah, I get tired of seeing Proff. X treated like the Messiah, how Apocalypse or Sentinals or Badoon or Brood any number of evils befall the world because Xavier isn't there...Like the AOA, Days of Futures Past, Guardians of the Galaxy (I think, that's why the mutant left Earth and went to the planet Haven, right?), and any number of places the Exiles have visited... The whole Marvel Universe is set to revolve around him...

I'm not kidding, I can't stand demonic characters or outright magic users...except Nemesis, but that's mainly because I think it's her sword...
Anyways, I don't see why he neede to use those guns, blame it more on poor writing than poor Wyre...

Wyre appeared after many cable wannabe. I mean big guns, and the attitude of a tough guy. And as you said the guns where useless, it was only there for the cool aspect and in my mind, the first was cool, but after x character like him, it's more then boring. And I never was found of over confident character with an attitude Northstar been the exception. But if it's the first character of that kind you ran across, I can understand you liking him.

And also, Wyre was also a lot of pain for me as I had no particular interest in Wildchild. Liked him but not more then the rest of the team. But the book was at that time starting to be Kyle and his Alpha Flight and the Wildheart stuff was not something I did find interesting. Anyway, it more got to do with what are your interest or not and those stories did not evolved around my interesting subject.

Well, he did use his powers and the guns together, but it is true that he didn't need the guns. Maybe that was the whole point of his character, that he didn't like to use his powers alot because he saw what they did with his DNA, and was afraid that his mutation would turn him into a monster too(do you see that in the stories? I don't know all I have is issues #115, 128-129).
I don't think he is a Cable wannabe at all, he just never got the chance to be developed properly (Marvel should bring him back, though we all know they won't).

Guns will kill you just as dead as bio-organic spines...The entertainment industry often has a hypocrisy about killing, it's wrong to execute a criminal in prison, even humanely, but it's all right to shoot them dead in the street, throw them out of windows, chop them to pieces, burn them to death, or cover them in honey and have them eaten alive by fire ants..... :? (That's how Deadpool killed Humbug)

What I'm trying to say is Wyre could become just as monstrous and evil with guns as with mutant powers. The guns were wholly unnecessary... :x

Aaaaaah, but when he's using his guns he's just a merc, when he uses his powers he's a mutant monster. there is a very big difference (especially in comics). And anyways I'm agreeing that he doesn't need the guns but to comic writers: Big Guns=Cool

The only reasons I could see for Wyre using a gun would be to attack someone from a distance to inflict massive damage. Sure the wires could probably reach great distances, but not as quickly as a bullet. He's a mercenary! He uses what weapons will be most effective. Aside from the "kewl" factor with readers, it makes sense (at least to me) that Wyre uses a gun. And a big gun does more damage than a little one hence the size.

Well, in the last battle with the Hardliners he doesn't use his gun against them at all, so how do you explain that?
Anyways, the bigger the gun doesn't always mean stronger, I always remember in Men in Black Will Smith gets this tiny gun that every time he shoots makes him fly backwards from the force of it.

Zeke

How do I explain it? Easy, he engaged in close up, hand-to-hand combat with the Hardliners so the wires were more effective than a gun. However, if you reread #129 he uses his gun against the hazards of the assault course, because it was more effective than the wires as an attack.
As for the "cricket" (Will Smith's gun) reference it's a non-example since Men In Black has nothing to do with Marvel Comics continuity. I do take your point though that in makebelieve reality is what you want it to be, but generally in the comics (and reality) a bigger gun tends to cause more damage.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

Since around 2000 (about five-six years?).

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

First heard about'em when collecting the Marvel II series cards back in the early nineties. I wan't really sure what I thought about them back then since I only got Sasquatch and Snowbird and didn't know much more than that about the team and its history.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Personally, I think most people give Heather Hudson a hard time but I think she gives a lot to the team in terms of leadership and heart. I also like what little I've read of Diamond Lil, Nemesis, St. Elmo, CENTENNIAL and....Yukon Jack!

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Didn't really think too much of Roger Bochs....

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Not sure. Like Master of the Universe but he also seemed a little too much like Vandal Savage to me (although not as interesting).

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Pink Pearl.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

First run to when Heather becomes Vindicator.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Guardian
Vindicator
Sasquatch
Puck
Northstar
Aurora
Snowbird
Shaman
Marrina
Madison Jefferies as BOX

Marrina
Nemesis
Diamond Lil

Have yet to read the entire series but the originals are the best so far....

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Cannot recall of the top of my head but the cover art for issue #100, volume 1 is superb.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?
Only recently. Within the last 2 months or so. It began as a conversation where I dismissed AF as "totally boring." In particular, I hated the costumes.

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?
Really stupid costumes.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Heather.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Major Mapleleaf.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Nemesis.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
I'll get back to you, but the fat Pearl probably.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
a) Death of Mac leading to Heather leading AF.
b) Snowbird killing Sasquatch, then Sasquatch coming back in Snowbird's body.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather, Shaman, Sasquatch. Maybe Puck. (I see Snowbird as having left for Goddesshood forever.)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)
Heather. Every other gal has serious mental problems.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
I prefer Heather. I think Mac was a good leader 'til he died.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne, hands down.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
No opinion, but whoever brought Major Mapleleaf in should be tarred and feathered.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Another hard one. I'll get back to you.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Well, to answer you the writer that introduce both Major Mapleleaf is Scott Lobdell and yes it was a very bad idea. He is also my worst Character, just a little bit above wyre. 1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I don't, really...

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

An old Avengers issue...They, the Avengers, and the People's Protectorate fought some schmucks called the Combine. Actually, Alpha Flight didn't get to do too much, and my favorite character was the Crimson Dynamo, but hey, I was just a kid...

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

Narya. Dear, dear Narya...

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

Marrina. I just never got interested enough in her.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

See my avatar? That's who.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

The Collective. Rassum-frassum wiping out the team...

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

An old Claremont yarn, wherein the best incarnation of the X-Men ever teams up with Alpha Flight to check out a mystery up north. They run afoul of Loki, and a good time is had by all.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Oh man, if I could pick?

Heather (Vindicator) as team leader
Puck (Eugene Judd)
Narya/Snowbird
Northstar
Sasquatch
Shaman
Logan/Wolverine/Weapon X (I always got a kick out of how he never really warmed up the the people who were almost his teammates... but still killed in Snowbird's defense)

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Huh. Probably Heather. I wouldn't want to leave the island. ;) In all seriousness? Walter Langowski. A brilliant physicist. Forget his powers, let's use his brain...

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather Hudson. I especially liked her as leader before she got her suit, and had no powers. She was like Val Cooper, only, you know, good.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Chris Claremont. I can;t recall if he ever wrote Alpha Flight itself, but I always enjoyed how he handled the team.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Haven't got one.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Eh. Hard to say.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Whoever it was that manga-ed them up in the more recent stuff.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

One thing? Howzabout the cancellations? No?

Then I would've had Narya go on living... Oh well.

1. How long have you been collecting Alpha Flight?

I'm horribly dating myself, but I bought issues from Byrne's run when they were new on the stands. So that's, what, 1983 or '84? Quite a while, anyway! Like a fan boy, I stuck with the post-Byrne issues for almost the entire series, finally giving up around issue 100 or so. Hopefully I won't be starting a fight, but that first series was pretty terrible post-Byrne. Your mileage may vary, of course!

2. What was your first memory of Alpha Flight? If recent, what was your first reaction?

First memory? Well, the earliest would probably be that shot of Mac standing in the empty Department H from issue 1 of the first series. But the most vivid memory is when Mac died in issue 12. That really got to me as a kid. I also knew I loved comics at that time, since I re-read that single issue to death.

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?

That's a toughie. I love Mac from the Byrne run but I feel he's been changed quite a bit since then. But I love Puck (again, the Byrne run - I'm sounding kinda repetitive here, aren't I?) so he'll get my vote.

4. Who is you least favorite Alpha Flight character?

How to put this? What Bill Mantlo did to Roger Bochs screwed the pooch on one of my favourites. Bochs went from being a character I loved to a character I hated almost overnight. I'm going by memory here, but man...that bugged the hell out of me.

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Jerome Jaxon.

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?

Dreamqueen. Hands down.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?

Issues 11-12 from the 1st series. Though I have a major soft-spot for both the Great Beast run from issues 22-24 and also Byrne's send-off with Delphine Courtney impersonating Mac in 25-28.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?

Guardian (Mac), Snowbird, Aurora, Northstar, Puck, Sasquatch, Marinna

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island)

Mac or Puck. I can't choose.

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?

Heather Hudson. And I'm talking the non-powered version here, folks. She was awesome as the glue that held the team together both before and after Mac died in the 1st series.

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?

John Byrne.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?

Bill Mantlo. Ick.

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Byrne.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?

Sadly, Mike Mignola. I love Hellboy so don't get me wrong. But Mignola here was still finding his legs and did a crappy job with the team.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Linking Puck's dwarfism to some form of mystical jail (Razer, I think?). I thought that was horrible, mainly because Mantlo (I think it was Mantlo) just couldn't leave it alone. Puck was supposed to be a man who overcame a disability to excel as a hero. But nooooo...he had to explain why Puck was a dwarf in the first place. That said, the Aurora/Northstar elf thing is up there, too.

I agree with you but it's not only Mignola's fault, it's also the inkers fault. Talaoc(sp?) had a too strong inking, look at the covers they looked a lot better.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?

Linking Puck's dwarfism to some form of mystical jail (Razer, I think?).[...]. That said, the Aurora/Northstar elf thing is up there, too.

yes, I agree

Time for some updates.

EDIT: My current opinion is: Most of the costumes have been poorly rendered at some point, making them seem dorkier than they could be. For instance, Snowbird's costume has undergone virtually no changes over the years, but sometimes she looks awful, and sometimes she looks great.

I find Heather's dorkiness is proportional to the size of her googles.

The "big P" costume is always dumb looking, though. Puck looked his best in vol 2. Loved that mustache!

3. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight character?
Heather.

EDIT: I still like Heather, but if there is ever a volume 4, she and Mac should go into semi-retirement, perhaps as directors of Department H. Time to let other AFers shine.

Sasquatch is my new favorite. Hard to imagine AF without Sassy.

4. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight character?
Major Mapleleaf.

EDIT: I recognize that AF vol 3 was just a lark, so MM is a natural fit for that kind of thing. But he remains a pretty bland character with a silly name. (If he doesn't have any powers, why would AF bring him along to fight the Collective? Duh!)

5. Who is you favorite Alpha Flight villain?
Nemesis.

EDIT: I would like to see Nemesis in a more villainous role in any AF vol 4. She was very menacing in vol 3, and I really believed she wanted to gut Sas in #2. I can imagine that if Rudy were to die before her, she would spend her remaining days being a royal pain to AF, especially if they contributed (in her mind) to his demise.

Overall, the greatest weakness of the AF series is a lack of decent villains. Job number one of vol 4's writer is developing good recurring villains. Is Aurora still screwed up from HoM? She could be a good villain. Is Jeffries still screwed up from Weapon X? Him too.

Having three former Alphans as villains could make for a great run. Just keep them separate, not in an "Omega Flight" type team. (Been there, done that.) No more sinister Dept H plots, either. (Been there, done that to death.)

6. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight villain?
I'll get back to you, but the fat Pearl probably.

EDIT: Pink Pearl remains the worst villain ever.

7. What do you think is the best issue / story-arch from Alpha Flight?
a) Death of Mac leading to Heather leading AF.
b) Snowbird killing Sasquatch, then Sasquatch coming back in Snowbird's body.

ADDED:

7.1. What do you think is the worst issue / story-arc from AF?
AF vol 3 issues 9-12. Time travel stories suck.

8. What do you consider the Alpha Flight "Dream Team"?
Heather, Shaman, Sasquatch. Maybe Puck. (I see Snowbird as having left for Goddesshood forever.)

EDIT: If I have to choose a new AF team for volume 4, it's be:
Northstar, returning from X-Men to lead AF (under Dept H's new civilian directors, Mac and Heather)
Sasquatch (of course)
Talisman
Zusha Yu

Thus, Northstar, Sas, Talisman, and Puck II would be the main spearhead of AF, with Mac, Heather, Shaman, Puck I, Snowbird, etc available to "backup" when required. They would also be mentors to the spearhead characters.

I see Northstar, Talisman, and Puck II as "being developed" over time by Mac, Shaman, and Puck I into a formidable force. Thus, Northstar begins as arrogant and irresponsible, but eventually a true leader emerges. (See more below.) Puck II and Talisman both grow to be the main brawler and mystic. Sas remains the stable core that the more evolving characters develop around.

I would like Talisman to return to AF, mostly because she's a cool classic AFer from the Byrne era. Also, I have this feeling of "unfinished business" between her and Shaman that needs to be concluded.

I recently finished reading Lobdell's AF vol 3. I really grew to like Yusha Yu, and would like to see more of her. This is another circumstance of "unfinished business" as well.

9. If you were to be stuck on a desert island with one member of Alpha Flight, Who would it be (powers can not get you off the island).
Heather. Every other gal has serious mental problems.

EDIT: Add Zusha to that list. ;)

10. Who was/is/could be the best leader of Alpha Flight?
I prefer Heather. I think Mac was a good leader 'til he died.

EDIT: Obviously, I'd like to see Northstar given a chance. I just see this as natural character evolution: we saw him chafe under the leadership of Mac and Heather, so let's see him when the shoe is on the other foot.

Partly, this is motivated by a desire to see the Aurora story arc from HoM concluded. Seeing Northstar taking the lead to resolve her shift to the dark side just seems so natural and inevitable to me. The fact that Northstar has his own darkness to deal with makes it all the more interesting.

Of course, as the new leader, his costume will require a subtle alteration to the right-hand side:

11. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight writer?
John Byrne, hands down.

12. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight writer?
No opinion, but whoever brought Major Mapleleaf in should be tarred and feathered.

EDIT: My opinion of Lobdell is mixed. Reading vol 3 for what it is - a lark and a spoof - I can appreciate the self-referential humor. It was very funny at times. But that run has sooo many problems. Even after 12 issues, the powers of several characters remained unclear, and the timeline of AF was so horribly screwed I don't know what's what now. Who died in New Avengers 12 - the time-displaced AF? Is there still an AF in space en route to Plodexia? Are they coming back? [Head hurts]

Worst of all: where were the villains? Twelve issue, and the only fight sequences included a cloned AF, waxed Marvel heroes, Big Hero Six, and each other! (Ok, the alternate timeline Box looked great, but still...)

13. Who is your favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Another hard one. I'll get back to you.

EDIT: The artwork of Clayton Henry was just awesome. The action sequences were just so dynamic. I mean, I think Marrina is a boring character, but she just looked so great in issue 3 that I'd accept her back just because she looked so interesting and distinctive there! Sasquatch looks just amazing in those 10 issues, and all the other AFers just seem more alive than I've ever seen them before.

14. Who is your least favorite Alpha Flight artist?
Cut it out already!

EDIT: Gotta say, whoever did vol 3 #7-8 really had a tough act to follow. (Ross, was it?) It was hard too look at.

But so far, my least favorite art ever was in "The Gift" X-Men/AF book. (Paul Smith and Bob Wiacek?) Everyone looked their worst in that book, Sassy especially.

15. If you could undo one thing in Alpha Flight history, what would it be?
Major Mapleleaf.

EDIT: Or, I would just erase AF vol 7-12.

Definitely Roger Bochs inside the robot/armor. Roger was a good soul. Heard he died, which is too bad.

I liked what I saw of Jeffries, he had a very useful power. I'm not sure he was the joining type, but who knows what John would have done with him.

I still haven't had the commission framed, sorry to say. I'm still trying to convince the wife to let me put it where I want it hanged. I'll probably do a basic black frame with UV glass.
