View Full Version : Dream Artist

Though I think we're mighty lucky with Clayton Henry as an artist, I've always dreamed of certain artists doing a run on Alpha Flight.

If you could pick one artist (that hasn't done it before) to do a stint on AF, who would it be?

I'll go with Ron Lim. I've always loved his stuff.

I've always thought that Dale Keown would be the perfect fit for Alpha Flight.

Back in the early 90's, during his run on Hulk he created amazing renditions of a number of Marvel U characters (anyone remember the X-Factor cross-over?) and I believe Keown could breathe new life into the Alpha franchise.

Although, like most on this board, I'm really enjoying Clayton Henry's art, so no disrespect to him.

Cheers,

Mike

My pick would have to be either Tom Raney (I love his Outsiders work) or Paul Pelletier (has a John Byrne feel to his artwork) :)

I really liked Joe Madureira's work on Uncanny X-Men. I think he would do some good things with Alpha Flight.

Jim Calafiore would be my chocie. His Exiles run (including several issues featuring an Alternate Universe Alpha Flight) is just the kind of solid classic superhero style art I'd love to see on Alpha

I'd like to see Michael Turner draw the team. From his work on Aspen and the DC comics he did recently he can draw some nice pictures. Especially the females.

Jonboy Meyers is being a great job on Marvel Age: Spider-Man. But do not put Dan Slott from She-Hulk on it he has got to be one of the worst artists I've seen.

jim lee, his stuff is classi, or the guy (can't remember his name) that is currently drawing teen titans, his art is so clean and unflashy that it's awesome.

Alex Ross is one of the best artists now.

Alan Davis would be good, or a surreal Dreamqueen story drawn by Ben Templesmith or Ashley Wood.

It's a damn pity that Ashley Wood's issue didn't actually feature any Alphans :(

Would anyone like to see one of those oversized comics that Alex Ross does for DC once a year but featuring Alpha Flight?

Phil

I think the nearest we're ever gonna get to see Ross doing AF were the sketches/covers for Earth/Universe/Paradise X.

Phil
06-20-2004, 06:43 PM
jim lee, his stuff is classi

It's be interesting to see the evolution from his first arc on AF.

I was going to get a sketch of Box from him at Bristol last year, but really couldn't be bothered with the day long queues.

That was an interesting few hours, wait all day with a playing card in your hand or get him to sign some Alpha's and sod off to find alternatives. I think our option worked, considering that I saw an unsigned AF #51 on Pauls wall for nine pound fifty last time I was in the shop.

I'll go with Ron Lim.

His renditions in the Infinity whatevers were pretty solid.

Richv1
06-20-2004, 08:16 PM
THat would be interesting to see how Alpha Flight would evolve in a Paradise X setting. Snowbird could actually become a goddess instead of a demi-goddess. Guardian could have a much more technical suit. Sasqutch could be either more fierce or a lot more gentile. Nemesis could be out of her suit.

Phil
06-20-2004, 08:48 PM
AF were in Paradise X...

Mac was a headless cyborg, Sas was unable to revert to man form, Puck and Snowbird were 'dead' , the rest of the team made little cameos here and there.

Richv1
06-20-2004, 10:06 PM
Yes but how would the all new team look? Like Yukon Jack would he be in a white suit? And king of his people?

Rob Liefeld.
I joke. I find his work to be some of the worst to ever be in a comic.

Now personally I'd like to see Todd McFarlane. Now I havent really read comics in about 8 years and the only time I ever came back to them was for Volumes 2 & now 3. But growing up with comics in the early 90's I always wanted to see what TM would do with Sasquatch and Guardian if given the book for say five issues.

oooh!! that would be GREAT to see MacFarlane on the Flight!! I loved his work in the early90's on Amazing Spider-Man, and his stuff on Spawn. I think he'd do ALL of them great justice! (the fact he's Canadian also plays into it too)

cough...cough...We don't have the same taste Swifty, I really like better cover 1 and 3. cover from the left makes me think of Mignola. I don't like the cover in the middle, because Wolverine got a very strange posture. and the top pic, is ok, but very static and not powerful like cover 1. and top pic, like everything made by Liefeld, have the proportions wrong. The more obvious, Puck head, Aurora and Talisman shoulder, Talisman's head or neck, there is something wrong in that area and definitly talisman's foot. And except for heather, the other woman looks like women bodybuilder or men, I don't think Aurora would like to look like that!!!

I dunno, phil. Seems like typical Liefield: badly proportioned (not just Puck either, tho his torso is HUGE), and over gratifying the women's boobs. Plus, Liefield seems to be like me in his drawing: starts with the head and torso, and when it comes to appendages, looses interest.

Now personally I'd like to see Todd McFarlane.

His Puck n Sas cameo in Spider-Man wasn't bad at all, so it'd be interesting.

I never saw the cameo (if you have a scan, you'd be my bestest platonic friend :D), so can't comment on MacFarlane's renditions, tho would NEVER balk at the chance of seeing my own personal Canadian Idol (I know, that's lame, but hey, it's me) doing this book! Even a sample page would make me drool!

Manara as an excellent drawing, but you will see naked women all around. Not something I'm interested in and it would definitly not be comic code approuved.

Maybe Moebius? or Loisel? or Bill Sieckivic (sp?)

You mean Bill Sienkiewicz (sp?), the guy who did New Mutants in its early run? The Demon Bear Saga was AWESOME because of his pencils. But I don't think his work really captures the "feel" of Alpha Flight. It's too dark, too edgy. Don't get me wrong, though; I think his work is amazing.

I'd like to see Carlo Barberi on the new Alpha Flight, or even the guy who did Crimson (Humberto something, I think?). After seeing Barberi's work on the new New Mutants, I think he'd draw this team very well. His style would mesh well with Henry's.

Humberto Ramos...that one I remember because of his work on Impulse.

Thank ya, darlin'... it's been one hell of a class-load for me at college, so I've been very intermittent here lately. But I had to at least pop in during a lull in the fighting and stick in my two cents. Even worse than being behind here, I'm behind on my fanfic. I just squeezed out Alpha Flight #4 at Marvel Omega, and I've still got to do #5, #6, and Moonstar #2. Oy vey!

Impulse had some nifty art, but I thought Barberi did that, not Humberto? I was confused, too... their styles are almost 100% alike. It's weird to me. But in a good way.

I like Bill Sienkiewizc's work too, but it would have to be a pretty gritty Alpha tale for his work to really shine. Maybe a mystical tale with Snowbird, Shaman, Talisman and Earthmover. Up against the Great Beasts!

Moebius would be a great artist too, Or Ladronn, whose work kinda reminds me of Moebius.

I would love to see Mizuki Sakakibara take over Alpha Flight. I absolutely love his work on Exiles.

Henry is alright, but all the character's faces look the same. Look at the red-head nurse from Issue 1 and then look at Heather on the last page of Issue 4. Their faces look identical. I noticed it on a few issues of Exiles he did too. Sue Storm and Majik looked identical. Granted, his action scenes are good, and his cartoony style fits the feel of the book, but I just wish I could tell the characters apart by something other than their clothes.

What was the comic? A lot of what is showed would depend on the writing... it's not like you could have a battle with Magneto in the script and the art shows two people having sex...

Uummmmm?? Perhaps you missed the 75 issues of Catwoman he did??
Just because the artists does some alternate genres on his own doesn't mean they are incapable of doing mainstream stuff.

Likewise for Milo Manara. I have books he's done with no nudity. They are amazing. All his stuff is. OK not all, but you know.

Richv1
06-24-2004, 12:08 PM
Yes I know about the Catwoman comics he did and yes they were well drawn. I was refering to what he is doing now. And I just read Clone by Milo Milano which was excellently drawn. It had a sex scene in it to but it was fitting for the story and so was the nudity.
Tarot though is a comic drawn just to show off nude people and them having sex. Which is not why I buy comics.
I rarely buy any comic that has nudity or sex in it. I like comics as a meduim to have fun with them. You can sit down relax and laugh or cry as you read about such and such's adventures knowing they are not really real but still if its writen well enough and drawn good you get drawn into it. You actually feel for the characters.
