Yeah, like I'm gonna win a theological arguement with anyone. My biggest contribution to your discussion on Thors hair would be whether he had matching collar and cuffs?

We we can argue that since Thor is a god, what is hair to him? Nothing, he probably choose the aspect he wants to be. So why not choose the color he likes depending of his mood. or why as hair like hair? he could have hair made of real fire, why not? He's a god, no?

Sorry about misspelling your name Allan. I can see how that could really flip a person off.

Anyway, you are free to cloud the issue as you will. This is well past the point of silly already. The word used to describe the gods hair was *red*, not fiery. Just red.

You want red to be blonde to be fiery to be whatever, thats good for you. You go with that.

I'm going to drop this, because, as said SEVERAL times already - by me as well as other - this arguement is silly, but I'm not sure you even know WHAT the issue is, and you're not listening to my side. You want to be right, fine, have it your way.

Hope that helps.

I insist I have it my way, my mum use to be All England Mud Wrestling champ and she'll back me up if I don't get things my way.

Hope that helps.

All Canucks are happy by nature, it's in their genetic make up. I read this book was which tells you so. In it, Dr Godfrey Doolally presented a very good ...

Or maybe its really "earth-coloured", and thus could be light brown or dark brown or black or sandy blonde ... or even green maybe!!!

I sincerely doubt we could do any of the above, whereas we have been going on different interpretations to try and figure Thors hair colour, we hae Phils word that his hair is multi coloured. I have to believe him as he got my dinner money back.

Yes, but all we really have are the words "brown", "grey" and "white", which, depending on who reads them could potentially mean blue, gold, and/or rainbow swirl.

Yes, but the words written by Phil are in the context of todays English whereas the words describing Thors Barnet are rough translations from centuries old text which have been bastardised by whoever has translated them, or translated and interpreted the already translated and interpreted centuries old text. Or not as the case may be :-)

Indeed. The word that we use to indciate brown today, ie. brown, is the descendent of the same word that we used for brown 1000 years ago, which itself is descended from a root that was used to indicate things brown.

Godforbid someone suggest that 1+1 = 2. Some genius would find someway to overcomplicate the matter, in true genius fashion.

But hey :D

The word may remain the same, but would all historical text writers have the same definition of brown, or would some describe Auburn of mild ginger as brown. What we need is somone who went to the Pub with Thor, or at least knew his hairdresser.
As for 1+1=2, in standard maths yes, but in a binary sequence, then we have problems. :-)

Pay close attention to section 2.1(a).

Also, if 'brown' has always been 'brown, then how come dictionary.reference.com adds the following?

[Middle English, from Old English brun. See bher-2 in Indo-European Roots.]

I want to answer that! I want to answer that! Brun is brown but in french, so brown do not come from the teutonic language but from French, And Thor was not norvegian but french juging by this.

A AH!

Did I get something wrong?

Indeed. Pay close attention to your dictionary. The same dictionary reference you provide below lists the roots of both yellow and blond. Their presence in the language, at least according to your link above, drastically reduces the chances the word red might signify either, or either might refer to red.

The fact that Thor's hair is mentioned as being in anyway exceptional amongst a people, ie. the Scandinavians, who, unto this day, are predominantly blonde might also suggest a thing or two. Or maybe all suggestions aren't received equally.

Seriosuly? Sounds shift as languages travels around in time and across space. Brun is the linguistic ancestor of todays brown, even as cynn is of kin, thunor of thunder, et al. Philologists can explain how and why this occurs, but if you thought I was saying the word brown as we have it today was always in use, you must have missed the *essentially* part. Brown is the word the evolved out of the a root, brun, that has long been assoicated with that range of colours we have long consider to be brown.

Anyway, I'm sure that all of those who care, know how to google a topic. And now you have provided them with a handy dictionary link, which I'm sure we don't have to hand-lead them around. So, I"m sure that they'll draw their own conclusion and see whats plainly evident.

Man, people of different languages and cultures must not be able to talk about **** in your world, if a simple commonly recognized colour supposedly cause so much grief.

Anyway, cheers!

Well, to give Allan credit, he's trying at least to backup his saying with proof and for those of us that care, I do like to have the link even if I know how to google a topic. I may not understand everything you all said, but that reply sounded for me very mean and yes, I draw my own conclusion and it's plainly evident.

I would provide links as well, but it would be absurd since all one has to do is hit a few keys and take their pick. The burden of proof is not on me. I would willing join the "contender" on a forum that is full to the brim with people who have PhD's and Masters degrees and who are themselves Scandinavian to debate the matter, I happen to know a few. That as opposed ot trying to obfuscate a simple matter amongst a bunch of people who are largely innocent of the subject.

I would also be less, ahem, "mean" if my "contender" dealt in a like currency, but he doesn't seem to have a problem being "mean", so tough for him and me.
