View Full Version : How do you pronounce "Shaman" ?

I tend to say "shaw-min" or "shaw-man." "Shay-min" sounds really odd to me. And "shay-man" just sounds completely wrong.
EDIT: strange. I had a fourth option (shay-man), but it didn't show up. Hmmm.....
I tend to go with Shay-mun. But that's just me.

Maybe it's my Philadelphia accent but I say Sha-min. No "W" in there at all.

Uh, is that a long "a" or a short "a" ? (That's why I used "shaw" and "shay.")

I looked it up on dictionary.com and the pronounciation given was: shaw-men.

Where I live people use both shay-min and shaw-men, neither one seems to be better than the other.

I always pronounced it Mag-neeto
But I do hear Mag-neto
Seriously? That's funny, Mag-neto sounds like a kiddy magnet game.
"Hey kids, rainy day? What's there to do!?"
"MAG-NETO!"
Mag-neeto just sounds more evil.

what way do they pronounce it in the movie? For myself, Magneto is one of those words I simply pronounce in french for laxism or lack of knowning how to pronounce it or simply by habit.
But I don't like "evil" Magneto. I like him better in the gray area, so I guess I would like better Mag-ne-to pronounciation (whatever it is :P )

In the movie it's Mag-neeto. A long E. The other way would sound like a quick Mag-nit-o, which to me still sounds like a kid's game. Maybe evil is too strong a word. The long E just demands more respect.
For Shaman, it's the oposite of the strong E in Mag-neeto. I use the soft A like Shaw-muhn.

His name is pronounced just the same as the word "Magneto" in the dictionary (Mag-neet-oh).

I used to pronounce it Shah-m'n, but heard the name of that one-hit wonder band pronounced 'Shay-mun' so that's what I go with now... but I don't really care that much.
You say tomayto, I say tomah-to. You say potayto, I say topapo.

Depending on nothing in particular, I usually pronounce it "Shaw-mun", and occasionally "Shay-mun.

I guess Shaman's one of those words with no specific pronunciation?
Though as Snowsquatch posted, there's always the X-Men cartoon to go by.
