in X-Infernus #1, former Alpha Flight member Witchfire returns.

Spoilers:
[spoil:7f91ec5731]She's apparently now evil and is trying to conquer Limbo. She summons various Hell-Lords: Mephisto, Blackheart, Satannish, Hela and Dormmamu and basically tells them she's going to become one of them by taking over Limbo and using Belasco's amulet.[/spoil:7f91ec5731]

Well, at least she's gonna be used, since she's quite an obscure character as of the last ten years. Where did you hear/read about this?

Also, notice how a lot of AF'ers are coming back out of obscurity, even those where started OFF obscure??

In the entry for "Eurth" in the recent A-Z hardcover handbook, I noticed another Witchfire-an alternate reality version of the Avenger Scarlet Witch.

I wonder if this Witchfire is the one in X-fernus or if it's the Beta Flight one..?

She is allegedly the daughter of Belasco, after all...It makes sense that she may appear in Limbo at some point.

Wow, what an issue! I'm really impressed by this comic, both the art and writing are fabulous. Some of the panels I, well, simply stared at them for a long time. Very modern style. I really liked Witchfire's new duds and that flaming eye shot! Reminds me of her breakout issues in Alpha Flight v1 #122-124 when she was all eye-flamey.

For a 1st issue, just excellent. I am definitely returning for all four issues, already hooked me into a series I had never even heard of until today. Thanks for the tip and congratulations to the creative team for a real gem!

Heh, just read the promo 'issue' for X-Infernus, and I think it's kinda interesting that they hid the soulsword in Nightcrawler's soul to hide it from Belasco, considering Belasco is an alternate-reality future Nightcrawler (thus Witchfire is actually Nightcrawler's daughter...)

Wha-?! Um...I thought Belasco was a dude from Italy who discovered a portal to Limbo a couple hundred years ago and was transformed into a demonic-being there?

Apparently you are correct, Dana. At one point, Universe X writers had made the Belasco/Nightcrawler connection, but apparently that's been retconned (which sucks).

Close, but not quite. Yes, dude from Italy, but it was more than a couple hundred years ago (closer to 800), Belasco was already consorting with demons before he ended up in limbo and had become a demon before ending up there, and he didn't discover a portal, his demonic masters exiled him there for failing to release them as agreed.

So...any idea as to whether this is the series that AF will make their appearance out of? Or is that stretching hope a bit too far?

Maybe she pulls them out of limbo, somehow?

Oooh ooh ooh! I got the variant cover today! It's a retailer incentive, not cover price. It's a nice shot of old skoo Illyana mirrored with new skoo, amazing. Me excited. :D

I saw an ad for it, and wanted to get it based on the art alone.

Now, it must be mine!

Hey, thanks for the link, King Mungi. Wow, I really love that Finch pin-up of eye-flamey Witchfire! I bet it becomes an alternate cover! I also like how he made those little pouches all over her, as if they are storing spell reagents or something. Well, this issue just looks as incredible as the first, can't wait!

Excellent! Alpha Flight on the cover! Thanks for the info, Hyperstorm.

I also see Marvel is re-printing issue #1, on top of the variant cover:

Yar, I got the reprint cover today, as well as issue #2 of the series. Witchfire is back! Illyana seems surprised to learn that Belasco has a daughter (we're not surprised... she should have read AF volume 1, duh), and it looks as if there's going to be a big battle next issue. Witchfire looks incredible in her new costume and I love what they've done with her firey eyes in almost every panel.

Issue #3 was awesome. Here is a preview of issue #4:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=preview&id=2273&disp=table

and from that page, it appears there will be a variant cover released. EDIT: the regular cover features (a very busty?!?!) Witchfire, and is also by Finch, the artist for the issue #3 regular cover.

Wonder what the outcome of Witchfire will be...death, stay in limbo, or whatever?

Be awesome if Talisman appeared, but that's very unlikely.

Yeah, I'm wondering too... it's unlikely she will be completely victorious, but let me say for once, it's refreshing to be rooting for the "bad guy"!!!

Hope they continue to use her, which is possible they will as Marvel seems to be using opposite genders of established characters as a theme. ie. Black Panther (female), Mr.Sinister (female), Bullseye (female), etc.

She would be the counterpart to Belasco.

Don't forget the new Quasar, and the new Loki, as well! You could also include Thor Girl into this mix, possibly. And, if you really want to get technical, the "new" Wasp is Hank Pym, so Wasp has gone from female to male as well.

When you think about it....this is pretty weird, isn't it? Hopefully when they bring AF back, they won't continue this trend. After all, Vindicator has been both male and female, and Sasquatch has REALLY been both male and female! Enuff already!

Well good news is Witchfire doesn't die, bad news is she is back in limbo and I'm not talking about Belasco's realm.

With all the heroes and villains coming back from the dead lately (Magik, Elektra, Mockingbird, Revanche/Kwannon, possibly soon the original Mastermind and also apparently Jean Grey, etc, etc...)...Why the heck is Alpha remaining dead?

I'm glad they didn't kill Witchfire off, at least (even though, I'm not a big fan of the character).

The X-Infernus TPB is supposed to come out this week... not so much of a bargain at $24.99 for four issues, plus the "Saga" comic (only previously available online), plus one other comic, say 6 comics total is over $4 each... not such a good deal... but it is solicited as being an oversized hardcover..., so maybe I'll pick it up anyway to have a nice big version of a story that I completely loved and the artwork was amazing.

I bought the hardcover yesterday. Haven't had a chance to read it yet (so I haven't read the series), but I'll post my thoughts as soon as I can find them.

Or not.

I found it disappointing. An enjoyable story, but the beautiful cover art wasn't what was inside, and Witchfire could have been any generic villain. That was especially annoying in a story about redeeming an old hero-turned villainess.

Admittedly, that still makes sense, since the X-Men never knew Witchfire as a heroine, and she wasn't sistered to any of them, but still...

All that said, it was an good story.

Oh, there are some extras not mentioned in the solicit: it also includes stories from X-Men Unlimited #14, New X-Men #37, X-Men: Divided We Stand #2 and the last two pages are character sketch studies, one of which is Witchfire from issue #1 of X-Infernus. The variant covers for issues #1 and #4 are nicely reproduced, but it's missing the 2nd printing of #1. That cover was taken from interior art, so you're not really missing anything there.

The book cover is so very, very black. It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black. Except for the red lettering on the cover and spine.

I just read the hardcover of Storm and Illyana: Magik. C.B. Cebuski, who wrote X-Infernus, (I think, his credit says he's working on it) wrote an introduction for it.
The second paragraph has the following:
"1983. With comics at a whopping 60 cents apiece back then, I had to be ever so vigilant in my choices. At that time, books like Uncanny X-Men, Alpha Flight, New Mutants, Thor, Rom and Fantastic Four were all must-buys for me."

I thought that was cool! It would've been John Byrne's time, but he must've kept reading long enough to know who Witchfire was.

Just out of interest. Had Witchfire appeared between her last appearence in AF (mid 120's vol 1, I think) and X-Infernus? Curious as to if her change in demeanour was explained or we just accept that she decided to reclaim Daddies kingdom?

No, she just showed up. With an awesome new costume. And with awesome fiery eyes. I don't know of any other appearances between the end of the Alpha Flight run and X-Infernus.

Also, I sort of have a thing for chicks with fiery eyes, as you can tell.
