Here is my collection of AF art (though my big Guardian vs. Omega Flight piece was sold a month or two ago). Check out the gallery rooms entitled:

- Anthony Castrillo
- Art by Pat Ditton
- Byrne commissions
- Fred Hembeck
- Ian Sokoliwski
- Mel Rubi

Also, I have a handful of original AF pages by Byrne in the Byrne - Marvel pages gallery

Anthony Castrillo is doing the first two alternate covers to The Canadian Legion, the first one is a Homage to AF#1, the second is a homage cover to FF#1.

Anthony rocks!

Another John Byrne commission...

The face seems a bit off (features too big for her head?), but for the most part, I think it's very good.

Not a commission, but a convention sketch by Chris G from Wondercon in San Francisco last weekend. Love this artist, he's the only guy I went to in Artist's Alley. Best known for his Mini Marvels series.

I absolutely love the new commission. The only thing I'd change is not have Snowbird in mid-transformation as he likes to do. The rest is perfect.

What I like about this is that every character seems to be smiling. A serenity you don't normally associate with Alpha.

A couple more commissions by Fred Hembeck arrived yesterday.

The first is the second "Across the Page" piece he did for me, a follow up to this one: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=412591&GSub=54754 This time 'round, it's the team from the end of Byrne's run (minus Snowbird. Sorry, birdygirl).

Second, another cover redo (he did AF 1 last year). After seeing his version of Puck, I just had to get this one done:

Alice Cooper does indeed rock. He rocks hard.
Had tickets to see him last summer, but a friend in need called so I drive 400 kilometres to see her for two days instead. Missed the show entirely.

However, I did see him in 2000 (or 1999?), the Carnival Of Rock And Roll Tour. It was the best concert I have ever been to, bar none. One of the best experiences of my life.

Ryan Maxwell

For those wondering, the "old stuff" joke is in reference to the drawing of the train that Batman is holding. It's the oldest known drawing that John Byrne did, for his grandfather when he was pretty young (about 4, I think). I'm not sure if it still exists or not. I don't think it does, I want to say it was done with chalk on a board.

rplass
08-31-2009, 10:11 PM
Yes, it still exists. JB talks about it in his Modern Masters interview and there's a little picture of it too in that book. It's from when he was 2.

Sorry for the lag -- I managed to miss this previously. I got it a few months after the first time Marvel killed Northstar, via the very good luck of having a friend with some connections who took pity on the raging/heartbroken fangirl. I nearly died of squee when I first saw the "autograph" -- so very classic!

Sadly, I like those Spider-foes ones better... The Guardians looked like he wasn't even trying. That's just my impression of them.
And this is my impression of Clint Eastwood:
"Go ahead. Make my day." Hmm... I need to work on that.

It was said on the thread that he did four in quick succession - maybe he did the Guardians late, when he'd run out of art? (That actually happens.)

While I'm sure you sound just like Clint Eastwood I have to differ with you on the Guardian images (especially the second one because it's mine). Not all of us are just into the crash and bang of comics. There can be significant meaning behind the images that the reader responds to in a specific way. This image is one that I have always had in my head since I saw issue #11 vol.1 advertising the demise of an Alphan. Maybe I'll fill you in on it sometime. Meanwhile, try gritting your teeth when you do your Clint Eastwood.

I think I can restrain myself from licking it until I get it signed by Mike Carey, then all bets are off.

I'm pretty sure the watermarked version of this image is already in the gallery somewhere. Just as well, my little flatbed can't do anything much bigger than 11 X 8.

What most who have drawn the character after me seem to miss, is that Sasquatch is supposed to be kind of "cute" looking -- until he gets mad.

From what I have seen, too many try to make him look monstrous and savage ALL THE TIME.

Thank you, JB. Perfectly stated. And prefectly drawn. All the gushing on his board is mainly about Wolverine; for me, it is about the quintessential ability to draw Sasquatch like nobody else can.

Also, they comment about the amount of hits on his thread; I think that may have to do with rabid Sasquatch fans more than anything else!

(The above comments in no way are meant to disrespect Dale Eaglesham or any other artist who has drawn Sasquatch; truly, i mean that.)

Le Messor

Thank you, JB. Perfectly stated.

Yeah, it's the ages-old problem of thinking that because something works one or two times, it must work all the time.
Combined with the 'if everything stands out, nothing does' problem.

(The above comments in no way are meant to disrespect Dale Eaglesham or any other artist who has drawn Sasquatch; truly, i mean that.)

Yeah, Dale is one of the few whose art makes it look like he even looked at Byrne's drawings before taking the assignment.
