Some quotes from live chat
The Canadian government has branded Alpha Flight traitors as a result of events in Fear Itself

More quotes
Fred just confirmed that Guardian and Vindicator will be in the book. *I* can confirm that Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird, Aurora and, yes, Northstar will all be involved.
Old time fans will enjoy seeing things referenced, but you won't have had to read any past Alpha Flight books or Chaos War in order to pick it up.
But as a result of Fear Itself, there is a change in government, and so Alpha Flight finds themselves as the country's "greatest traitors," and they must go on the run and figure out what is behind the government takeover.

And another good one
Fred: They're using the clean slate provided by Chaos War to do a ground-level reboot. They're not ignoring everything that's come before, but they're not going to be referring to a character's multiple resurrections or anything like that. They don't want to get bogged down in the continuity.

Maybe it's just a pipe dream, but I'm hoping Jimenez does all the covers. *__*

“Basically, if John Byrne didn’t come up with it, we’re throwing it out,” said Van Lente who noted that through no intentional malice, the team had been subjected to a lot of bad continuity over the years. “I wouldn’t say we’re ignoring everything that came later, but we’re not going to be referring to an individual character’s multiple resurrections over the years…this is one of those stories that wants to start with a clean slate,” Pak added.
As for which characters will or won’t be appearing and how, the team heavily hinted that Puck will appear in the series, and asked whether Northstar would continue his role in the X-Men line, they said that elements from those stories will make it in – including Kyle, Northstar’s boyfriend from “Nation X” – but overall he will become a full-time Canadian again.
Well, I'm sold.

The Multiversity interview indicates that's the case. I hope they make some of those into posters, because damn!
The key quote for me, over on the newsarama link
"I imagine, that if there is enough audience demand, there will be a ninth and subsequent issue," Van Lente said.

WOW!
I...am stunned.
Why didn't they tell us about this before now? Not even any hints before now...how cruel!
Oh well...I'm happy now. :)
I'm not sure I get the premise - "new government" and "branded traitors"? Alos, I am wondering just how 'throwing away anything Byrne didn't do or say' is going to work in actuality; does this mean they are goning to pick and choose what they want for ther characters' past? We already know Puck has been referenced in interviews as having a demon in him, and we know Mac and Heather have a baby, and JB did neither of these things...
Huh...guess it is "wait and see" time again.
The appearance in Chaos War #5 pretty much was the hint...

02-15-2011, 05:40 PM
I didn't get that hint, Phil.
That wasn't a dig, I just meat it was unlikely they'd bring them back for no reason. Maybe that's just hindsight speaking though.

Marvel is hitting every point with this; the original team, a great creative team, and it's a maxi-series even. Now they just have to make sure there is enough positive exposure as we get closer to the release date. Man am I pumped for this.

Oh my goooooood, this creative team, I can't even. There are writers I prefer at Marvel right now and there are (very very few) artists I prefer, but for my money, this is the single best writers/artist team I can think of since... a very long time. Milligan/Allred X-Force, maybe.

Shaman has facepaint on...
I'm not seeing it, but it wouldn't be the first time. I notice his costume has 'fangs'.
The following is based on my email to The Master when he sent me the news yesterday (I didn't have time to read this thread when I got home last night) :
:) I wonder if that's something I'll pick up?
I note Aurora's using her gold costume from later Byrne issues.
I'll start with the negatives, because I swing that way.
Certain things fill me with trepidation:
The hard right fascist government story hook didn't hurt, the writers explained.
*sigh*, at least they're not working for them, or this'd be v2 all over again. Just once I'd love to see them do something actually daring and original, though - like a hard left government that's just as bigoted and hateful as a right - only with the opposite targets.
it fits right in with the 'Fear Itself' story line,
Ugh. And, I'll probably have to pick that up, too.
Pak said he had multiple copies of the "Alpha Flight" relaunch by John Byrne
and
noting that this will be the first appearance of the original team working together as one force on the page maybe ever
These are quibbles, but it causes a slight worry in that it shows a lack of knowledge of their history, which could bite them later.
Byrne has never relaunched Alpha Flight, and they have worked together on the page before - at least, the team as it'll appear in this book has (#s 3-5).
Things which fill me with much hope:
Alpha Flight
'nuff said.
YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
overall he (Northstar) will become a full-time Canadian again.
Does that mean I can stop picking up Uncanny? Please, please take Madison Jeffries, too! (He was a Byrne character.)
Neither:
Asked whether the book will feel a bit dated,
I hope so!!!!!!!!!
Comments:
each time the fans have said, we don't just want a team with the name Alpha Flight on the cover, we want the originals back...
Were they quoting me, I wonder? (It's something I've said online multiple times, and my kind of phrasing.)
I love Anxy's comment on page 3.
I'm going to have to buy it because it's their last shot but I'm just not that interested.
It's *always* their last shot. At least Marvel hasn't (that I know of) said this yet.
It's not so much ignoring what came later, as not referencing it.
Uh, the difference being...?
Not from my email:
I'm so excited! I just can't hide it! I'm about to lose control, and I think I like it!

I think it will focus on the original team. But I can almost be assured that Talisman will at least APPEAR - probably not any kind of big role - but she was a huge part of Shaman and everything that does with him. So I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't have at least SOME interaction with her.

Nobody has commented on Puck yet. If you read the various quotes about him, they say they ar having trouble geting to use him becuz he is being used elsewhere. They also say that he will be in the series. Amd they also say that the Alpha Flight team is the 8 people who were brought together in the one-shot. Yet, again, they say that it is Byrne's original team, all working together for the first time since their first appearance.
Sounds like Puck may appear, but not as a teammate. Perhaps his role in Hell sets him up for a (villain?) role in Fear Itself?

Well Puck didn't come back in Chaos War, and he doesn't appear on the cover we see of the new series... so I fear we won't have Puck be on the team. And since they're going with a clean slate, I doubt they're going to bring Puck back in the series...

From my blog...
While FVL says they are having difficulty in getting Puck released to them for this series, Pak somewhat contradicted this by saying that if the readers buy it and read it expecting to see Puck, they might be quite happy. They heavily hint that Puck will appear in the series…but nowhere is he listed as a part of the Alpha Flight team…
I think we can expect 'some' appearance by Puck in the maxi-series at least. Also, we should be looking for him elsewhere, as he is apparently being used elsewhere, and I tend to think that it is in the Fear Itself event.

I think I actually teared up a little there. I love Aurora's yellow costume and hair, so I wouldn't really mind if she went back to it. Marrina is looking very bestial, so I'm willing to bet that they will be exploring her rage, a hint of which was shown in the Chaos War oneshot.
So excited!!!

They said in the interview that one or two of the team may be on the fascists' side. Who, now, could be the ones they want to be the 'spies'? After all, the new god of Chaos/Fear isn't playing favorites.

I wouldn't be surprised if those quibbles were caused by CBR paraphrasing Pak's actual answers.
Those are all very good points! You're probably right.
As for the lack of war paint; that's easily explained. War paint is for war. Chaos War. Now it's just an Alpha Flight series; no more war.
Not sure it needs explaining... As others have said, it's a cover-only thing (I only questioned it because I'd looked at a different cover, and was asking what paint we were talking about).
I think it will focus on the original team. But I can almost be assured that Talisman will at least APPEAR
Some part of me keeps expecting stuff like this because I keep forgetting it's limited.

Too soon, man, too soon! Not. Funny.
Even if it wasn't too soon, I still have two points to make about this;
1) Not ever, not if your name is Bendis.
2) FVL needs to tell him to shut his trap. How dare he ridicule the book that FVL is writing, before it even hits the stands? If you can't say something positive (and when it comes to Alpha, Bendis has proven that he cannot), then say nothing. And because this particular negative vibe is coming from Bendis, see #1 again.

Thanks to whoever deleted my other post on Bendis.
Flightpath07, you make a good point- who the hell cracks on another writer's book like that? Low class.
Bendis really came out on the wrong side here: no one is gushing over how amazing and exciting it was that he killed AF in New Avengers #16. No one praised him for a clever and well-written sequence of panels with thoughtful and realistic dialogue. No one looks back and cherishes that issue as a favorite moment in comic fandom.
Meanwile, everyone since the Jiminez variant cover, and especially for McCANn's Chaos War:Alpha Flight one shot, and now the new maxi series, everone has praise and good things to say about FVL, Pak and Eaglesham. The buzz and excitement is so positive and the future looks bright for the 1st issue.
He really needs to apologize to the creative team of the new book, the fans need to marginalize him for this abominable behaviorand his legacy as a "writer" speaks for itself - disdain and deserved acrimony follows one guy while cheers, smiley faces and hope follow others.

I'm pretty sure that was kind of the point. It was just a joke, guys. Bendis isn't exactly my favourite person, either, but these guys goof on each other all the time, I doubt his comment was meant in a mean-spirited way. The team that he unceremoniously offed to widespread disdain is back with a high-profile maxi, so he poked fun at his own actions. Not that big a deal.

True, true - but also less chance of getting cool filler stories. You have to take risks to get gains. I think others say that better than I do.
Also, under an 'events-only' model, the team could never have their own stories; Alpha Flight would always be literally fighting somebody else's battles.

As to that non-interview you weren't talking about. I'm friends with Fred Van Lente on Facebook so I'd be willing to try and set up an interview via whatever (email, chat, semaphore.) I've done this a couple times on Comicbloc with Gail Simone talking about her last (at the time) Birds of Prey work, also with Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann near the end of their run on Checkmate. So, I've just got back from a con over here in the UK, and whilst at it I had a quick chat with Ben Oliver, artist of the 0.1 issue.

I think the fact that he has a steady relationship helps to, as I think Aurora alludes to in NX #2.
I always thought that a lot of Northstar's tension was that he had feelings for Walter originally and that was part of why he hated Aurora being with him.
That was just my original take on reading it though, I'm likely wrong.

In #24, the Artificer "needs" "one who loves him, one who hates him and one of great power" to rescue Walter's soul. While this quickly proved to be a trap, why would he bait a group of rescuers with one who hates him unless he could sense that hatred? I always figured he hated Aurora being with Walt because he hated Walt.
Mantlo's later confession by Northstar to Wanda of "preferring the man you were" as an eye candy factor, not lust.
Think about it. In their high school years, JP was a self-aware gay kid and Walt was a jock and a bully. It's very reasonable that JP would truly hate him.

Mantlo's later confession by Northstar to Wanda of "preferring the man you were" as an eye candy factor, not lust.
It could work either way, but I'm basing it simply on Byrne's initial conflict between the two.
Think about it. In their high school years, JP was a self-aware gay kid and Walt was a jock and a bully. It's very reasonable that JP would truly hate him.
Would J-P have known that from their initial meeting? I'm not saying 'love at first sight' as I hadn't mentioned love, just feelings, but a physical attraction on first impression. THEN he discovered he was a bully THEN he started a relationship with his sister THEN he genetically altered his sister and distanced the two of them after only recently finding each other (in the grand scheme of things).
That'd be enough to have feelings become confused as hatred, or even turn into hatred, and certainly enough to cause tension within the ranks.
But again, it's been years since my first reading and it was just my initial thoughts.
MistressMerr
03-01-2011, 09:40 AM
Yeah, between his tear-filled reaction to Walt's death ("Jean-Paul! You, too?") and Wanda's reaction to his revelation not really being in line with something as simple as JP's having had the hots for him once, I'd say it was definitely Mantlo's intention for there to have been some real feelings there.

Again, it was just my original take, but intense feelings can easily become hate when spurned.
Jean-Paul protests that he doesn't hate Walter before quickly trying to cover his feelings, but the group ignores him, and then JP looks pained when it seems like they won't be able to save him -- he's even the first one to dash up and catch Roger when he exits Box, aiding in getting Walter his new body that much more swiftly. That was why the attempt at retrieval didn't go as planned -- there wasn't anyone in the group to fulfill the "hate" requirement. So I think that it was originally Byrne's intention to have JP feel some affection for Walter, and it just turned out to be one of the few things Mantlo carried over intact into his run.
cmdrkoenig67
03-02-2011, 04:01 PM
Jean Paul's unspoken "love" for Walter is just another in a long line of contradictions/continuity screw-jobs to what Byrne had already written about the characters...Sigh. Again, I loved Mantlo's work on other books, but with Alpha Flight, I continually ask...WHY BILL, WHY?!

I know I'm a bit late but... I'm so glad to have Alpha Flight back!!! I hadn't been so excited about a Marvel book since AF volume 2. And it's the original team! It seems Marvel finally listened to fans.
Everything looks good so far. A writer who knows and respects the characters, a good artist and... Phil Jimenez's covers! I hope it becomes a regular series so that we can enjoy AF regularly for many years!
Now, things I'd like to see:
- The old AF chemistry from the Byrne days.
- Mac and Heather's daughter being named. And Heather as a leader, I don't want another Jewel-like character. She's as clever, capable and strong (if not more) as Mac
- Snowbird using her vast array of powers
- Northstar *****y attitude
- Keep Aurora's mental problems in the closet. She's had too much already. A little bit of normality in that respect won't hurt.
- A few of AF classic villains coming back and a personal favourite... Pink Pearl :)
- Oh, and I almost forgot! Marvel Legends figures of Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird, Shaman, Puck, Vindicator and Marrina!!!

Most definitely, Mos_Def.
And welcome back.
fred van lente is not shy about giving interviews or taking questions from fans which i love about him.
anyways, he did a interview and my tweet question was asked about the hudsons baby (pmoody28 listen at about the 17:20 mark
http://byodinsbeard.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/ragin-ravens-episode-11/
then i tweeted him about continuation of the numbering (more of a joke) and beta flight, to which he replied:

See AF #0.1 for Beta.
RT @pmoody28 (http://twitter.com/pmoody28) Once #alphaflight (http://twitter.com/#%21/search?q=%23alphaflight) becomes ongoing: continuation of numbering (131) and beta flight back! make it so!
i dont think we could have asked for a better creative team with the ideas we have all been wishing for. if alpha flight fails this time it wont be from lack of effort.
i just pre-ordered 10 copies!!

See, this is how I know Fred loves the title.

Thanks for posting that Phil. So far everything about this maxi-series and the .1 issue is hitting all the right notes. The only thing now is for Marvel to promote it more as the company has been absent when it comes to pushing it. Not that the creative crew hasn't been out there doing interviews and posting on their websites, I just would hope folks like Brevoort would be shilling it in his Talk To The Hat column, and that they would post something about the .1 in the May solicits on the Marvel website. Still, very exciting.

It's too bad there weren't more Byrne-created Alpha characters around for them to use. Unfortunately, Most of them have been killed off (Wild Child, Diamond Lil, Nemesis, Bochs/Box, Smart Alec, the Master, etc...), while some are stuck in X-Men (like Madison).

If---if---the maxi-series becomes an ongoing series, I hope that the editors and writers and artists will be willing to say whether:
(1) the Eugene Judd with short bones who was nearly disembowled by Marrina is the same Eugene Judd who is tall and has a sorcerer living inside of him;
(2) the Elizabeth Twoyoungmen/Talisman who was told by her father that the Coronet of Enchantment could never be removed is the same Elizabeth Twoyoungmen/Talisman who had the Coronet taken away and worn by her (aged) father;
(3) the Michael Twoyoungmen who successfully operated on Eugene Judd [see # 1] and helped Aurora with her cracked ribs is the same Michael Twoyoungmen who (while wearing the Coronet of Enchantment)
let Heather/Vindicator kill "Snowbird"
(4) the Aurora and Northstar who use logic and reasoning are the same Aurora and Northstar who couldn't figure out that any contact negates their powers made them a liability to the team, and in fact never mentioned it;
(5) the same team that confronted a demented Lionel Jeffries who had turned a hospital full of innocent patients, doctors, and nurses into monsters is the same team that would even consider for a second making the self-same Lionel Jeffries a member of the team (did I mention that Lionel supposedly "cured himself" and the only one to have witnessed this is his brother Madison Jeffries, whom Lionel had used his monster-making powers on)
It's probably obvious that I think it is a terrible idea to graft what could be a good run onto the "Mantlo Era" continuity.

I agree with Hankpym...I also think the best approach is to not address said continuity screw jobs, especially Puck's "origin". I really don't think there is any way to fix Puck without some sort of reboot, since several authors have established that Puck used to be tall and that Razer was the cause of his short stature.
The only way I can see to do said clean up in aisle 4 (hockey gear), is to do a soft reboot/retcon...Say Puck returns and he mentions having Achondroplasia (maybe more than once) as Byrne intended and originally stated in the book, but have no character in the book ever mention Razer again. Said retcon/reboot would only be successful if it was consistent moving forward from that point on, was set in stone in future Handbook Puck entries and if certain fans actually allowed it to be Puck's accepted history (there is no guarantee of the last one, though...Even though I personally, would be fine with it).

yknow...I never count the continuity error that said Bochs and Jefferies knew each other before Byrne's run. Actually I think it was kind of corrected when Jeffries says in issue #63 (I think) that when he hooked up with bochs to get revenge on Omega Flight it was the first time they met. So....I just chalked up Mantlo's error as having scramble mess with jeffries and boch's mind since he touched them both. I also attribute that to boch's insanity....since it made no sense for him to suddenly to go nuts when Mac said he was a stable individual.

I'd love to see the original Omega Flight as the new Gov't ops with maybe the brain patterns of Jaxon in the robot formerly known as Delphine. What better way to strike "fear itself" in Guardian and Vindicator than to have the man who (sort of) killed Mac first and the person/robot who kidnapped Heather and then impersonated her dead husband. The only problem is that I think only Wild Child is still alive from that original group... unless the new writer is somehow able to revive them as well.

Wild Child is dead as far as we know (killed by Omega Red), then again...He didn't appear in the Wolverine in Hell storyline (or did he?), if that means anything. Flashback is the only other known possible survivor, he's just gone into retirement/hiding. Truthfully, Robot MX39147 (A.K.A. Delphine Courtney) could easily return, since as a robot, her memories and programming could have been saved somewhere.

Since her body became Vindicator's flight suit, it'd be great to see her come back with her original body, by taking over the Vindicator suit and rebuilding herself. After all, Heather could just switch to the green suit from Volume 2...

The original quote from the press conference was:
At the moment, the series is slotted for 8 issues — with a special Point One issue illustrated by Ben Oliver out in May.
"I imagine, that if there is enough audience demand, there will be a ninth and subsequent issue," Van Lente said.
At the time I presumed that meant 8 issues plus a 0.1, but reading it now it definitely looks to be a 0.1 plus 7 issues.
As to the price; these days all Marvel first issues are $3.99 with most 2nd's going down to $2.99 BUT with this being specifically launched with the careful phrasing of Maxi-series, it could well all be $3.99.

I thought the same as you, Phil (from the info in the original quote). What's with Marvel putting Alpha Flight into odd numbered mini/maxi-series? Omega had 5 issues, now Alpha's new maxi has 7? it should be a nice round number, like 8, 10 or even 12.

That, and the idea that she survived what Madison did to her just seems silly. And, she survived all this time, then decides NOW (for any given value of now, after all this time) to come out? And, what, Madison never ever thought to check for that? And, he made the suit out of the thinking parts?
It would require way too many leaps of thought... but simply 'downloaded into a new body' totally makes sense to me as is.

I have a trope called 'Sowing the weeds', where a writer sets up really cool ideas or leads us down the garden path or something, then the next writer comes along, looks only at the surface, and uses what the original writer wrote to completely ruin it.
Examples here are Byrne making Roger look evil for a bit, so that Mantlo could go 'oh, he's evil'... (Okay, not a great example of this...)
The big one, of course, is Mac's infamous return from the dead; the deliberately stupid cover story by Courtney later said to be true.

Well, my first villain would have been The Dudemeister, who just happens to be a huge fan of the Bill & Ted movies. And likes to rob video stores.
I'd have called him De Nomolos... or Ed Solomon...

I'd love to see Wild Child back. but not completely retconned. He was a great grey-area character and I think that can still be pulled off here, if there's space. I really hope Pak et al don't retcon out Aurora and Wild Child's own romantic connection in favor of Walter and her. Sure, even if he's a twisted eloquent trickster, he still has people to call friends, and he loved her. Even if they're not together, I hope it's not retconned right out of existance.

Given that Sas and Aurora was Byrne, and Wild Child and Aurora wasn't, I'd think the former would be more likely.
That said, it doesn't have to mean a full retcon.

Another FVL interview (http://www.dailyblam.com/news/2011/04/18/exclusive-interview-writer-fred-van-lente-talks-alpha-flight) :D
Some choice snippets:
“We're retaining a lot of elements that have been introduced to the characters since the Byrne series. Sasquatch has led the team a couple of times, most recently in OMEGA FLIGHT, so there could be some friction with Guardian as a result. We're retaining the boyfriend, Kyle, Northstar acquired in NATION-X -- he's a major character in the new book. I think one of the best Alpha Flight stories I ever read was Aurora's battle with Norman Osborn in DARK X-MEN -- we're definitely showing how therapy has improved her life. But will it be enough...?
Marrina is getting a complete redesign, both visually and in attitude. Too often she's been defined by the men in her life, whether The Master or Norma. And she's too much of a goody two shoes for my taste. So she's losing the Shrinking Violet aspects of her personality and really coming into her own in this book. Early prediction: She will be the runaway fan favorite.
But of all the characters, I'd say the one undergoing the most significant changes is Purple Girl. Or should I say Purple Woman...?”

Already said my bit on the Aurora thing, so I won't rehash it again. As for the rest:
Kara? Serious squee! She was about the only thing I liked about the Mantlo run, and I was seriously annoyed that she nearly got an off-panel death.
Kyle as a major character? HELL YES! I need a dance partner, ya'll -- can't sit still!
Likewise pleased by the news of Marrina coming into her own, though I do want to see her kick Namor in the head still.
Is it May yet?

Super excited about Kyle and Marrina! Never been a big fan of Purple Girl, but still excited to see what they are gonna do that could make her more interesting in my eyes! These cannot come out soon enough!

I'll predict it here; Purple Woman is in charge of hunting down Alpha Flight! And she uses her powers to make Puck join her!
The biggest mystery, though, is why are they being so strange about Puck? They keep inferring that he probably won't be in the series, yet they put him on the variant cover of issue 2 (plus on a wanted poster on issue 1 cover)! What the heck!?!
Actually, the more I think about it...the less certain i am that it is Puck on that cover...I mean, it is definitely Puck's BODY, but is Puck inside it, or somebody else?...

1- I dont think they are talking about Kyle as in Wildchild. They are talking about Kyle, Northstars partner'
2-Persuassion as a bad person I hope doesnt turn out. She has no real basis to go evil. She knows who her pops is as she is nothing like him.
3- the Puck cover, to me, isnt showing Puck in a cell. It might mean Puck looking to get the other Alphans out of the cell

In the end of the series they should all wake up and fight Dreamqueen. Everyone is the enemy 1-7 and in 8 they thrash Dreamqueen

Okay, so it sounds to me like Purple Woman goes around possessing people, and Cody's fear of Alpha Flight going rogue kicks in. Oh, by the way, did anyone else notice the writer called Namor "Norma"?

Me too! I'm tired of good guys going evil.

It could be entirely symbolic. I've seen covers with characters unrelated to the issue inside before.

Wasn't it FVL, though, who said one of the main things about Alpha Flight was that they create their own worst villains?
Maybe Persuasion goes nuts, and animates Puck's dead body.
Maybe Persuasion (that's "Purple Woman", according to FVL) learns to use her powers in a greater manner, more like her Pop, and marionettes a bunch of heroes into doing whatever she wants to.
Maybe Marrina is the mole, or the bad person. With so many of The Worthy being water-based peoples, seems like she will be a main character one way or another (FVL has already told us that much); and it would definitely suit her new bad-arse image.
Any way you slice it, Mik, i am afraid that you will not be able to escape "good guys going evil" in this series...
Maybe Purple Man is the member of The Worthy?
Is he alive or dead again at the moment?

I'm betting it's the same thing Citadel was referring to. Kara probably sees herself as the good guy fighting against tyranny.

Was it ever mentioned one way or another whether or not Kara spent time in Neverland once Weapon X wrapped? (I know she was intended to die there, but don't know if she showed up on-page outside of that one scene where she was saved by a coloring error.) That experience would probably go a long way toward changing her world outlook...
I think it was, but only in handbooks (198 Files, off the top of my head).
Her only appearance since has been the Digital Holiday special.

I believe somebody mentioned this before, but It wasn't a coloring error...Kara was never drawn in the series. The artist drew Sienna Blaze instead of Kara, as mutants were herded toward the death chambers. The writer later mentioned that Kara was meant to be in that crowd instead.

I'm guessing Kara was supposed to be on the X-Island up until recently, as the X-books have Greedily laid claim to nearly ever powered mutant on the planet. She appeared happy in the Holiday special.

The way I heard it about where the ball got dropped art-wise was that the figure colored as Sienna Blaze was supposed to be Kara. Not that I'm complaining that the series didn't get to abuse more Alphans on-screen, mind.

Manny: I want the weekend off. I want a life.
Bernard: This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!
Manny: We have needs! Fran wants to learn the piano, I want some time to myself, you want to go out with a girl...
Bernard: Don't make me laugh... bitterly. Fran will fail, you'll toil your life away, and I'll die alone, upside down on the floor of a pub toilet.

No worries, but it is definitely Sienna Blaze who is depicted (colored correctly). IIRC There were discussions here about Kara not being shown at all, so technically some of us felt she wasn't dead (even though the creators stood by that for a while).

Wasn't sure where to put this so I posted it here. Comments from Van Lente:

I saw in another post a comment about the mutants remaining in AF that still have their powers. Just wanted to mention that I think Flashback is still powered up and there hasn't been a mention of Goblyn or Laura Dean being depowered. I don't know if there is any interest in using any of these characters, but I was hoping that they may show at some point.
Marvel's stance tends to be the other way around -- if they didn't specifically say they returned their powers they probably lost them. Believe me, I know this from many long and bitter battles with Editorial, and have the scars to prove it.

Also, just to comment for comment's sake, it would be great if Hercules really got it wrong and accidentally brought back Diamond Lil, Wild Child, Smart Alec, Nemesis and/or Bochs.
Herc definitely brought back some folks that didn't fight in that final Chaos War battle...
