Granted, of all the team Marrina is probably the one who could most do with a costume update, but I just don’t know that I’m a fan, especially of the seaweed collar + fins. We go from the too-simple bathing suit to something that really is entirely too busy. She looks like the Creeper and Mera had a love-baby and punted it to the Marvel U to keep everything hush-hush.

On a more positive note, Marvel does seem to be giving the new Flight book an actual push -- good creative team, an event tie-in, lots of art sneak-peaks. It's heartening.

Quiet! D'ye wan' us t' get sued?
The artwork is great.
For me, this is the definitive image of Marrina:
864
She's been Byrned, of course.
Sweet, a little awkward, gentle... this one image captures it all.
Sure, she just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?
865
But normally she's sweet and gentle.
Which means, to me, Marrina is the last person who should have the emo / punk look. It looks cool, I like it, but I don't think it suits her.
I'll have to wait and see where they're going with it.
Sea turtles. Hee hee. I think they work for her.

It just might, especially after she's gone mad and gutted her teammates. And both times, she was killed by her husband.
I hope they spend some time discussing it in the comic, though.

This is what I'm thinking the redesign has to do with. Not even just the really dark stuff she's been through, but the fact that she was a sweet, small-town girl thrown headlong into the insane Marvel universe. She's due for a bit of rebellion, I figure.

I was going to say, "huh?"...But it makes sense in some regards. She is very young and having been killed twice and being brought back to life might mess one up a bit (tattoos, piercings and all).

The changes in Marrina make perfect sense to me also, at least with an innder darknessreflection of everything the character has been through.
I don't know if I like the sex appeal touches. Having twice been slain by your husband might make you NOT want to be attracting sexually. Dark, edgy and outwardly off-putting make sense for the character's history, but sexual appeakl does not. I think they could have kept the goth look without tatoos, and without piercings that might reduce her streamlined swiommer's appearance.
I also don't like the tattoos. He skin can withstand the ocean depths, so I would think the inking process might have been more complicated than inking a normal human.
The collar, the leg fins, the seaweed clothes that all can reflect her mood.... Seems they're remembering that Marrina is a metamorph. My guess is that those aren't clothes at all.

Marrina's rebellion aside, I'd actually love to see the characters brought back more to their true roots. I'd like to see the power retcons vanish...Marrina being a metamorph (as Kozzi mentioned)...Is actually a retcon (Byrne never had her morphing all over the place and that "ability" also wasn't listed in the original Handbooks) or the twins being speedsters who could fly and run fast is also a retcon. They were meant to be able to fly fast, move at superhuman speeds, but they weren't meant to be Quicksilver/Flash clones...Not to mention, why would you just run fast when you can fly?

Though edgier Marrina has potential if Dan Smallwood is brought back. I would love to see him come back.
I also hope Marrina shows her electrocution powers. She never exhibited them personally, but since the Plodex have been shown to have the ability, it makes sense she would.

I bet Byrne never had Aurora speeding molecules on a person with mere touch with Weapon X. Do the twins still have the flame power they got from the Children of the Vault? Purity light Aurora had for a bit. Stuff happens. Id rather them run as super speed then the 3 stuff I just mentioned.

I was more interested in this:
One of the most gratifying experiences of my convention appearances over the years has been having Gay fans come up to my table and thank me for Northstar. Even tho the Code and Shooter would not let me state explicitly that Jean-Paul was Gay, evidently I was un-subtle enough in my writing of him that the “message” got thru — and at just the right time for a lot of people.
Very encouraging to think that something as generally inconsequential as a comicbook can nevertheless reach out to people in a positive way.
As hard as Byrne is on Alpha Flight, it’s nice to know that he figures something worthwhile came out of the time he spent on the book.
So far as it being a "retcon" goes, I kind of have to shrug. Whatever the authorial intent, what's on the page is ambivalent at best. Plus, Byrne showed the twins being able to move individual body parts at extremely high speeds -- if they can throw one hundred punches in a second, why shouldn't they be able to move at superhuman speeds so far as running goes as well? Granted, I'd be willing to say they can probably fly faster than they can run, though.

Marrina may not have morphed "all over the place" under Byrne, but she did exhibit slight biological changes. The Plodex race itself could adapt to its surroundings, such as Marrina taking human form. The Plodex in Lake Ontario also seemed to be metamorphing. To me, Byrne opened the door to the possibility with those things. Some post Byrne changes make perfect sense.
I love almost all of Byrne’s work, but especially on his boards he is more concerned with being right than in making correct statements.
There is common sense to "why run fast when you can fly faster?" But there is an answer: space. Byrne said "Northstar was just flying close to the ground" in X-Men 121. Didn’t look that way to me. For an Alpha citation of superspeed running by Byrne, how fast did Aurora change clothes in that scene in Walt’s apartment? Should we think she changed clothes while flying indoors? Makes me wonder just how SLOWLY they can fly to stay airborn.
I think there’s also a shared core of powers to Northstar and Aurora, so I never minded any of the extra abilities Auroradeveloped with the light powers. In AF#1, Byrne established that the light powers can affect the Ems of Guardian’s suit. That opens the door to there being a lot more to the light powers than Byrne explored. They may be twins, but they seemed to develop their powers slightly differently. Aurora developed individual light powers after Byrne’s "mutant alteration" storyline, so it is natural that she could do more varied things with the light.

My understanding was that Marrina took on human form because Plodex egg was waiting for encoding and took on the DNA imprint they came into contact with first? The Master stated that he felt compelled to travel to the Plodex Ship as where other creatures. The ship decided which species was the most dominant and imprinted the eggs with that DNA. So this morphing power confuses me a tad. The reason given for Marrinas mate not having form was that the original ship was damaged in the crash and therefore didn't imprint the eggs.

Right...The other thing that confuses me is how can Marrina change into her "leviathan form" anyway? What exactly is that form based on? Plodex need DNA to take a form and Marrina's egg originally used Mrs Smallwood's DNA to take a human form. Just how is Marrina miraculously able to take the form of leviathan (more than a hundred times her own size even) with no "leviathan" DNA introduced and no genetic manipulation? It makes no sense.

Cody comes out of his braindead coma and decides that it's all AF's fault so becomes PM to get Dept. H & AF shut down?
Maybe the big bad is animating Cody's brain dead body?

Nope and he just recently addressed this very topic over at the Byrne Robotics forum.

OTOH, she did have shapeshifted blisters, and some (extremely limited) shape changes when she met said mate.

"I spell good."
I don't think those were blisters but rather "future egg sacks". No not from the future, but y'know, receptacles for whatever passes between a plodex boy and girl. Also in regards to the flying/running thing I'm sure they can both run but Northstar was a world class skiier (athlete), so maybe he just likes to run because it is more athletic. Aurora probably prefers to fly just so she can be alone with herselves.

Heh. You just used the words "Aurora" and "alone" in the same sentence.

Under Mantlo, which they've said they're ignoring. Well, kind of.
Oooohh... dip spit... I thought you'd misspelled 'despot'.

Probably;
I'm using 'blisters' as a visual description, and it's not meant to be accurate.

I added a bit of colour to the Marrina sketch. Nothing major but I think it gives it a bit of life.

Nice.
That really works for me.
If feels like Marrina Classic, keeps a single colour scheme, but doesn't feel dulled-down or filtered.
Dude, go pro.

Eaglesham's work on JSA was brilliant, and on the FF. I am thrilled he is aboard the Flight. I like the looks, and this time out, the characters are all recognisable! Great idea to have Cody reappear. He and Mac had a good working relationship in the beginning.
Is Marrina seriously going to have pink streaks in her hair?
Interesting - and definitely unexpected.

Yep, she is. They're going with a semi-punk look for her.

I like the look, one of the things that niggled me about her was that 'poor liccle me' thing. I am hoping we see her in a battle and actually having total confidence in herself.

You can see a hell of a lot more detail than what you can see on the USA Today site if you view the jpgs at full size.

I've always thought of her as more the sweet & innocent type than a 'poor liccle me' type, though. Just in her Power Pack appearance, maybe the Marvel Team-Up sequel.
Of course, those two are about the most characterisation she's ever received.

I guess maybe I should have said I always got that 'victim' vibe from her. This new Marrina has gone from child to confident woman and her transition is plausible, unlike say the Storm transition from almost goddess to Siouxse & the Banshees wannabee.

Well, as I say, Power Pack makes the victim vibe a fair call. Wish they'd called her for Katie's thanksgiving party (she invited a bunch of their lonelier guest stars to Thanksgiving, and never even mentioned her. :()
Hey, I like Siouxsie and the Banshees!
Which, I know, you weren't saying anything against them...
just thought I'd mention it...
