In an article from Newsarama FVL is reported as saying:

Alpha Flight’s Fred Van Lente appeared as well, to great applause from the Toronto audience, and said that the team will next have to deal with being a group of renegades of sorts. He also mentioned their involvement in the Commonwealth of Heroes — it seems Canada isn’t the only non-American team that Marvel wants to talk about. Expect Captain Britain, Taskmaster, and Wolverine to appear in the book's pages soon. Here's the link (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/fan-expo-marvel-fear-itself-110826.html) to the article.

Hm. NOT the reveal we all hoped for, then? To me, it sounds a bit 'underwhelming' at the moment, like I need to go and take a nap or something.

Not much news, see what tomorrow brings, the AF panel.

well, hate to sound optimistic here, but wouldnt that suggest something past issue 8? i mean, we know the solicits up to 6, and i can't imagine wolverine or capt britian just popping in, sounds more like a story arc.

well, hate to sound optimistic here, but...

Only on an Alpha Flight forum would you hear someone say they hated to be optimistic! :p However, I was thinking the same thing, varo. Though we know at least one of those guys are showing up within the series, be it ongoing or not, it would seem like too much to cram all three of the characters mentioned into a maxi.

varo
08-26-2011, 10:43 PM
exactly. plus, the series is already being numbered as #5, #6, etc..... the x(of 8 )has been dropped. i really wish we could have heard the alpha panel, i know it was unofficial, but it would have been nice to hear from fvl, dale and even chris claremont.

still crossing my fingers. theres 2 possible panels, cb and the next big thing one.

btw, anyone have any clue what this "commonwealth of heroes" thing is?

alright i pieced it together, i'm like a regular columbo. someone asked fvl on formspring:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=34027 Will this be a mini or ongoing? Surely you can answer such a sweet and simple question. :) (http://www.formspring.me/FVanLente/q/230064144810785064)

Hmm-- There looks to be a day and a time on that.

which brings you to the page and showing the cb panel at 5:30.

soooooooo.........i'm gonna say they make a announcement about a ongoing there.

you heard it here first ;)

Nice work, Columbo!

be that as it may, I still find the little bit that FVL said about what was upcoming, to be very underwhelming.

Hands up, anyone who thought that Taskmaster wouldn't be appearing in this series?

Hands up, anyone who thought that an appearance by Wolverine in an Alpha Flight comic wasn't long overdue? Anybody here think that he shouldn't maybe pop in and say "Hey bubs, nice to see you are alive again! Sorry i missed your funeral, but i guess that's all moot now, eh? Toss me a Molson!"

Furthermore, like, what comic DOESN"T Marvel put Wolverine in ?!?

Captain Britain...okay, at least that was a surprise.

Still finding it all underwhelming. Hopefully there is a lot more revealed tomorrow, and it is more exciting (plot-wise, I mean).

And, not meaning to say that issues with Cap Brit, Wolverine, and Taskmaster won't be AWESOME when i finally read 'em... I like this creative team, and think they are doing a fine job. Just wish Fred coulda leaked a bit more today, that's all.

It's not just that no announcement was made yet on the "ongoing or maxi" debate.

It's more that the reveal of future characters to appear in AF was...boring. Completely not unexpected.

I'd prefer a series without guest stars personally.
For me the lack of other characters means more chance for AF to shine.

I always wanted more guest stars so other readers would discover AF. I like that the team has their own little corner of the MU to play in, but sometimes you have to remind people they're still a part of it. And it goes without saying that any team -- any character -- should shine in their own title.

Let's hope whatever we hear today will be good news of some sort, whether an ongoing, or more maxis/minis in the future.

If we have only got 8 issues I'd rather not spend half an issue focusing on Wolverine.

Re-reading that newsarama article it sounds like if the maxi is only 8 issues that we'll be getting a "Commonwealth of Heroes" book to follow, focusing on non-US teams...

I'd like to see them in more line-wide events. Not that I'm a fan of events but if they're going to make them, it'd be nice to see more interaction. If the world is at stake, there's no reason Alpha couldn't or shouldn't cross the border. Especially since it always seems to happen so close in NY!

Agreed.

That's cool, too, but I prefer to have slightly obscure guest stars in Alpha comics. Say there's a mad Captain Britain / Excalibur follower, who picks up everything they appear in (like I do with Alpha) - they'll pick up the issue of Alpha he shows up in. (Naturally.) Then they might think 'this is really good! I want more!' That's how I got Young Justice (crossover with Supergirl) and even Uncanny 94-200 (the good stuff).

...we'll be getting a "Commonwealth of Heroes" book to follow, focusing on non-US teams...

I don't know where Taskmaster is from (or if he was just part of a general list of guest stars that aren't necessarily part of the "Commonwealth of Heroes") but wouldn't 'Commonwealth' imply Commonwealth countries only? Canada, UK, Australia / NZ (they might have to give us a few heroes for that to happen, though). Other members of the Commonwealth.

I've always enjoyed seeing Marvel take a run at non-US characters. Even if they only center on British Commonwealth countries, they could use characters like Capt. Britain, Meggan, Black Knight, Windshear (former Alphan), Shamrock (appeared in AF vol. 1 #108, I believe), plus others.
Hey, maybe they'll all team up and go after Boomerang and Pyro when they try to invade Australia. :)

I think Pyro's dead. And British. Half the time. (The other half, he is Australian. Americans have trouble telling us apart.)

Do you know what happened when aliens tried invading Australia in the MU? Do you?

Just checked. Wikipedia says he was born in Sydney, Australia. And that after he died, he was brought back by Selene in the "Necrosha" story arc.
And hey, if we can't believe everything Wikipedia says, I don't know WHAT to believe. :)

Fan Expo: Van Lente Does the Monster Mash With "Destroyers"

The Thing, the Beast, A-Bomb, She-Hulk and Karkas are just the five biggest names on the Destroyers whose ranks will also include other lesser-known and fan-favorite characters. "We're going to learn that the Destroyers is actually group that dates all the way back the age of dinosaurs, because one of the group's original members was Devil Dinosaur! Devil is a huge part of this series, as well as his friend Moon-Boy," Van Lente stated. "We'll also see Rick Jones' estranged wife Marlo Chandler who, as readers of Greg Pak's 'Hulk' run know, is the new Harpy. Plus, once our heroes hit the high seas, it will be a challenge to not include a certain Canadian female that is near and dear to my heart -- and an aquatic monster (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=32358)."

Actually, Devil Dinosaur was born in the early 1900's, he was an adventurer who got a demon-sorcerer trapped inside of him, and it shrunk him down to dwarf size, and then...ne'ermind, wrong story.
