I guess you just miss some tidbits. From 2006 (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=15242). About half way down, origins.

Whoa...I see what you are pointing out, Rob's viewpoint on why Cable was created and where he was originally gonna be used.

Another "no" by editorial in Alpha's history, eh? Or is this a "yes", followed by a "no"?

Interesting stuff. Good find, Del! Somebody should ask Rob about this, i'd be interested to hear more!

Danny Fingeroth was eager to get me on the series, but when it wasn't going to be re-launched I opted for 'New Mutants'

What does he mean by "wasn't going to be relaunched"? Was Alpha going to relaunch as a #1 in 1991 after issue 100 came out?

I'm pretty confident that he meant a change in direction/creative team. That was right about the time that Hudnall/Calimee ended and Nicieza/Bair started, wasn't it? Or was that at the end of the Nicieza/Bair run? Either way...

The relaunch every 12 months with a new #1 craze didn't begin until 1996 with Heroes Reborn.

Can you imagine how big Alpha Flight would be now if Liefeld had come on board and Cable had been an AF character???
The sales of X-Force #1 on an (eventual) AF relaunch would have been awesome.

That reminds me... I'll have to dig out those Liefeld AF redesigns that were floating about the net years back.
I think they pre-date this story, but they're still quite interesting to look at.
I think they're on my old HD.

And it probably would have been called "Alpha Force" and you could now find dozens of copies in every bargain bin in every comic shop in the world!

And that'd be the same place you currently find every issue of Volume 1 of Alpha Flight, except for the first few Byrne issues maybe.

I was thinking the same thing. Ha, imagine if Wolverine, Deadpool and Cable were Canadian characters.

My point isn't that you could find Vol. 1 issues in the bargain bin (because you can at one of my local shops...including the Byrne issues!), but you can find literally DOZENS of copies of X-Force #1 in any one bin because so many people bought it back then thinking they were going to use it to fund their kids' college, or their college, or their retirement. After a few years when the speculator bubble burst (even thought it is somewhat building again now...different subject), they sold their stacks to their LCS.

Same goes for comics like Superman #75, the "death" of Superman, still polybagged and everything.

And they would have gradually replaced Alpha Flight with Liefield's characters and then it wouldn't have even been Alpha Flight. Hm. Kind of like Volumes 2. and 3. and Omega Flight!

If you think about it, we did get Cable-lite with Wyre. I mean you had a big, scary soldier guy named Cable who was a cyborg that carried big guns, and you had a big, scary mercenary guy named Wyre, who was a cyborg that carried big guns.

Maybe my fascination with Liefeld-created characters is why I want (still) so much to see more of Wyre in Alpha Flight; i always thought he was an interesting character.

Although not a great fan of Cable or Cable types with big guns, I kinda didn't mind Wyre. His back story and his ties to Wildchild etc made interesting reading.
