I wasn't sure if this should go here or in 'Other Comics', so I put it in the cupboard.
I thought we should open up a thread about the movie. A spoiler-free one.
I can't review it - there's an embargo on reviews - so here's 12% of a moment:
If you liked the lead up movies, you're gonna love this one.

Meh. It's Marvel, so I ain't interested. I liked Iron man a lot, but the sequel was just okay. Haven't seen either Thor or Captain America, nor do i plan to. I 'might' get around to seeing Avengers, in a year or two, if I feel like it.

Oh, I'm pretty excited for Avengers. I mean, it's no Batman but it is what it is. Plus between this and the cartoon I'm seeing the team line ups that I enjoy the most.

Well, that works both ways; if you didn't like the others, you won't like this one. If you're not interested, or not gonna give them a chance, well, you're not.

I prefer it to the Batmans. But, that's me. Note: the little guys aren't in it. (Ant Man and Wasp)

There are rumours around of a scene filmed after the showing I went to; it's possible that it's a Hank Pym reference.

that would be sweet. i use to think the whole antman/giantman wasnt that impressive until i started watched more avengers stuff. was never in to the comics to much. and hank was pretty cool and he uses his powers to a t. hoping vision and wasp show up in the sequel as well.

There was a sneak preview in Sydney. Apparently there were previews around the world.

I am very much excited about The Avengers. It was the second comic I got into back in '83 (after Spider-Man), and was my favorite title for most of the rest of the 80's.
I've also ranged from enjoyed (Incredible Hulk) to thoroughly loved (Captain America) the movies. In fact, I just finished watching the Captain America Blu-ray earlier this evening.
Also, it comes out two days before my birthday and I plan on seeing it in the new IMAX theater here.

At my daughter's insistent urging, I broke down and bought and watched Captain America.
Ugh. Still really detest the character.
But the movie was 'good'. Not great, but good.
On another note (or is that the same note? I'm tone deaf, so it is hard to tell), my favourite part was where the real soldiers mocked him and threw fruit at him; I enjoyed that.

I never watch movies in 3D, especially if I know they were converted rather than filmed that way. Which, come to think of it, I don't know about Thor.
My showing of The Avengers tomorrow was advertised as being in 'glorious, comic book-like 2D'! (My first viewing was also 2D, but I don't know if it was advertised that way... in fact, we still didn't even know how many dimensions it had while we were in line in the theatre.)

So you've got comedians as politicians, while in America we just have a bunch of clowns.
To keep it topic-related...Why is it every time I see Scarlet Johannsen (sp?) as Black Widow, I think she would be perfect as another famous Avenger, Mrs. Peel?

(Scarlett Johansson; I had to look it up for my review)
At my first viewing, somebody saw the line and asked what it was about - when somebody told him it was the Avengers movie, he asked if it'd already been made and if it was about spies... after a while I had to step in and explain the difference between The Avengers and The Avengers. Then I mentioned it at work yesterday (after he asked my plans for tomorrow), and had to do it again.
Maybe it'll be easier if we stop calling her Natasha and start calling her Emma?

I viewed the Green Lantern movie for the first time several hours ago.
Hm. As disappointing as I find some of Marvel's movie work, DC sure does have a long way to go to tell entertaining feature-length films. As much as I enjoy the story of Hal Jordan, this movie was a major diappointment, and i doubt it would turn anybody on to wanting to read Green Lantern comics after having seen it. Ryan Reynolds is a good actor, but seemed to be phoning in his lines for the entire movie, he just wasn't believable. There was a LOT of CGI, and most of it detracted from the movie rather than adding to it, as if it just didn't quite synch properly with the film.
So, if this ends up being a lead-in to a future Justice League movie, they might want to consider re-filming it first. A definite miss.

The GL movie was never a lead-in to a JLA.
I found it... okay. Not good, but not terrible, either. Just... okay. At best.
And relentlessly dark grey. What's with all the grey?
The problem was, it should've been great.

I agree. I enjoyed GL as a purely shallow, no-plot action-y way to kill a couple hours.
I don't need high art with my entertainment (be it movies, comics, or what have you). As long as it's entertaining in some aspect, I am good.

Well, that makes up my mind. I was 'toying' briefly with the idea of going and seeing it this weekend. I've recently been turned down for two job postings which i desperately wanted and needed (and deserved), and am feeling a bit cruddy about that, so i was thinking about a quick pick-me-up. I think instead i'll just go for an extra hour of sleep or something.

I saw Avengers too! For half-price at a matinee, sweet. Loved it! Especially liked ScarJo and how they made her into a formidable complete kick-ass. It's so easy to ruin a girl superhero, but they got made her very powerful. Also the frakkin cloaked helicarrier was bizzzzoooo, awesome.
Next up should be an Alpha Flight movie.

Watched it tonigth with my daughter. She saw it once already, but this one was different for her because it was in 3D. She admitted after that 2D was better, and I have to say that I found the 3D imaging a bit distracting during fight sequences.
As for the movie:
It was a good movie. I won't go so far as to say great. It was definitely better than both the Thor and Cap (shudder) movies. I enjoyd it, and as a bonus it even made me laugh a few times. Mind you, coming from Joss Whedon, i shouldn't be surprised.
Was it the best movie I have ever seen? Hardly! But, for what it was, it was entertaining. I thought the Hawkeye character really blew, that was a major disappointment. There were also a few slip-ups, like Hawkeye running out of arrows and then next time you see him his quiver is full again, that sort of thing. There was also a line delivered to Dr Banner about him being the only good authority on gamma radiation that i found annoying, as off the top of my head don't both Dr Langkowski and Doc Samson know quite a bit about that subject as well?
Anyhoo. It was better than i expected it to be. Still wouldn't call i great, just 'pretty solid.' After seeing X-Men First Class, everything superhero-y will be judged according to that great movie, and Avengers was definitely a step or two below that.

Incidentally, if Marvel were smart (debatable statement, I know), seing the vampire craze that's been going on for quote a while now, they would have put out a movie featuring Morbius the Living Vampire and Werwwolf-By-Night. The two could have been investigating some occultist thing, both coming ta it from diffrent angles until they cross paths, fight, and then team up to bring the baddies down. Marvel could have then linked it to the Avengers movie plot somehow, and then put out a new comic featuring the two at the same time.

I bought the soundtrack CD - album, not score. It was reasonable, a good continuation of previous Marvel movies (because it had a lot of the same bands).
It might have been a bit better if it had had anything to do with the movie!!!
(I knew that when I bought it - for me it's a good compy of reasonably good music I'd never have got otherwise.)

Going off of memory, in The Incredible Hulk movie, Leonard Samson was only a psychiatrist and didn't have any knowledge of Gamma radiation (and truth be told, even in the comics he's not that brilliant about Gamma Radiation) and at this point Walt doesn't exist in the Marvel Movieverse.

In the Edward Norton movie, he was a name on a bit of paper in the opening credits. The psychiatrist you refer to was never named in the movie proper (though I think he was credited that way in the closing credits?)... and him being Samson kind of contradicts those opening credits (which lists Leonard Samson under 'known associates' (of Bruce Banner), which the psychiatrist clearly isn't).
So, it's even more confusing than it looks.
The Avengers movie never seemed to acknowledge the larger Marvel Universe, which was one disappointment I had with it.
