Dan Smallwood???

Im writing a fanfic where Dan Smallwood got convinced to take on the curse of the Wendigo in order to find Marrina. I cant find any of my old comics with him talking. Did he have an irish ascent? It must be the red hair that got me thinking it, but just wanted to make sure?

Barely had any speaking lines. You might be remembering AF #2, where Marrina's origin is recounted:

Angus (on the fishing boat where Tom Smallwood was Captain):
"Skipper, no! Y' cannae go outside in this gale! You'll not last two minutes on deck!"

Tom Smallwood (Dan's grandfather):
"Neither will the nets if we don't get 'em lashed, Angus. And my insurance will not cover me for a mad trip like this."

Later in the Smallwood kitchen:

Tom Smallwood:
"I don't know what it be, Glad. I've not seen its like in all my years at sea."

Dan Smallwood (a young boy, maybe 4 or 5):
"I's a egg, Gran. Look, there's a chick'n it."
[yes it says that exactly, dunno what kind of accent would lead to "I's" and "a egg" -rplass]

Chronologically next would be his appearance in Alpha Flight #1 when he brings the signal amulet to Marrina, but there's no evidence of any brogue in his speech or thoughts:

Dan Smallwood (on the rocky promontory):
"It's always me, Marrina. You left your brooch at home... and I think there's been a signal."
"I told you they'd not forget you, Marrina. I told you a call would come."
"Be careful, Marrina."
<If anything should happen to you... I don't know what I'd do...>

Marrina would be reported heroically lost in battle to Dan in Alpha Flight #4 in a silent scene, no speech.

Much later when Marrina was an honorary member of the Avengers, there's a two-panel sequence in Avengers #287:

Dan Smallwood (sitting at a coffee shop counter watching Marrina and Namor on TV):
<Marrina! It can't be!>
<Th-That's my childhood sweetheart on TV! What's happened to her?>
<I--I never thought I'd see her again. She's an Avenger now?>

That's the entirety of all of Dan Smallwood's lines. So you can decide if he has an Irish accent from that or not.

I think they wrote him to speak as a Newfoundlander would sound to those of us not from that part of Canada.

Right or wrong. I'm not sure.

But I will say, that Newfoundlanders definitely have their own way of speaking.

Newfoundlanders definitely have their own accents! I work with some of them on the phone and I have a hard time understanding some. I even grew up in the east coast of Canada as well, but still have a hard time with the accent!

I work with one as well, but he masks it quite well. Occasionally, somebody convinces him to talk like he grew up talking, and he falls right back into the accent; it's amazing, he is almost incomprehensible, even in short bursts! The rest of the time, he has learned to sound like everyone else.

Amazingly stealthy, those undercover Newfies...they could be lurking anywhere...the guy at the corner store, the cab driver who takes you home from the bar, the dentist who caps your gold teeth, the lady your brother is dating...anyone at all... :)
