• Review - Avengers #10 - SPOILERS

    Issue: Avengers #10 (Volume 5)
    Writer: Jonathan Hickman
    Artist: Mike Deodato
    Cover: Dustin Weaver
    Date Published: 04/24/2013

    OVERVIEW [SPOILERS!!!!]:
    --“Validator”--
The story begins when Ex Nihilo, a powerful entity and the creator of the “Garden” on Mars, fires his “Origin Bombs” at Earth in attempt to prompt an enhancement in evolution. These projectiles land in Perth, Australia and Regina, Canada completely changing the biospheres of the impact zones. In retaliation Department H sends a newly created Omega Flight, which includes a Wendigo, an automation named BOXX, and two humanoid members, Kingdom and the team’s leader Validator, to investigate.

Upon arriving in the infected city, BOXX and Wendigo are quickly overtaken and a dome suddenly forms around the city preventing escape. Eventually all communication with the team is severed except for a final message from Validator warning any others to stay away.

One month later, Department H in co-operation with S.H.I.E.L.D. calls in the Avengers, who were part of the containment team that dealt with the fallout of the Garden’s attack on Earth, to enter the city. Under the leadership of Department H Agent Robert Michaud and the teleportation abilities of Eden the recovery team successfully enters the city and are greated by miniature creatures which lead the team to Validator.

In her presence time begins to alter and enhance, sometimes 30 years in advance and back. Validator approaches Agent Michaud whispering into his ear and suddenly the city vanishes. Now outside of the city’s influence, Agent Michaud upon hearing the words of his daughter, “The system is now online” decides to take his life in order to protect her trigging a chain of events that will no doubt be discussed in further issues.

    REVIEW:
Overall an interesting story, but it was mostly a set-up issue for whats to come. What I did enjoy the most was the respect shown to Department H, putting them on the same level of S.H.I.E.L.D. Also Agent Michaud was the breakout character and for the amount of time he was present I was really intriqued in the character. There's a reason he is front and center on the cover with his daughter [Validator].

The art in the book is easy to follow and the rendition of Wendigo is probably one of the best I have seen. However, I wasn’t a huge fan of this new rendition of Omega Flight as they are not really addressed and some of their designs are bland or have been done before. Though I am grateful they were used in this story rather then Alpha Flight as they were created to be fodder.

So in summary this was an okay issue, but it appears Validator is going to be a predominate character in the future, so it may be worth it to pick it up to see where the story started.

I quite liked the issue, but then again I've really been enjoying Hickman's run.
It definitely fits in with the Volume 2-era Department H and it's covert/shady operations.

I liked Kingdom's powerset; a cross between Flashback and Manikin, from what I could tell.

Hopefully we'll get to see more of Validator, like you say.

Im sure we will, Id be surprised if we didnt. That's funny you mentioned Flashback and Manikin as thats what I thought as well. Be curious to learn more about Kingdom but his design is so terrible

I quite enjoyed the issue ! I loved Validator and Agent Michaud. I hope we can see more of them, and get any more insight into this new Omega Flight, in the future!

Yeah seemed Validator was shooting E-M blasts, thats why I felt this Omega Flight team was kind of bland. Nothing too new.

Kingdom started to show some uniqueness, but I dont know if we will learn more about him.

Um...didn't Kingdom Prime shoot eye blasts as well? That's a far stretch from Manikin/Flashback (not even sure where Manikin comes into it).

For a short appearance, it was quite interesting. Marvel is forcing me to keep a closer eye on Avengers titles to see if/when some news of them pops up again.

So, a few months back (?) we learned there was a much older team of Department H heroes which Logan knew about. Now, there is an Agent who goes far back as well, and has access to nuclear weapons, and Logan knew about him as well. Interesting.

Kingdom appeared to pull future versions of himself, in a Flashback/Manikin way, and the power-set could have been something resembling Highbrow's powers.

Yeah the scene where Kingdom was shooting eye blasts there was several dead versions of him on the ground. Similar to how Flashback's copies change their outfits to black to white, but Kingdom's copies changed from white to black. The white suit Kingdom was called Kingdom Prime like how Mankin was called as well.

      Cool.

I wonder how accurate the images of the city are? (Besides the effects of the Garden.)
The article mentions the skyline is barely recognisable, but that could be the effects of the Garden - but how well did the artist research it first?

My impression before reading this issue was that the avengers would locate omega flight and team up to assist them. I was hoping that this was like an intro to a new omega team that would eventually lead up to a new series.... So I was extremely disappointed and insulted that this team was created just to kill off... Seems no team from any other country will ever get a chance to have a series... Guess marvel does not think highly of other countries... Canada... Middle East... China... Russia all have teams but they are always push overs or antagonist and never seem to have value... And that's that I'm American... But I would enjoy a team series from other countries.

I tend to agree with you, Arc-Raver.

However, on the off-chance that this new Omega Flight team is "perhaps not quite as dead" as we believe, I am willing to take a wait-n-see approach for a bit.

I suspect we should be relieved. There's a team that's exactly like Alpha Flight, only not Alpha Flight, that gets killed off.

Does anybody else suspect that they wanted to kill off Alpha Flight themselves in this issue, but somebody decided that was a bad idea after last time?

Also, as a foreigner, I'd like to get insulted at Marvel's 'USA-only' policy, but I think it's more of a policy of: 'we have Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and pushovers' policy.

I'd love to see the front cover of Alpha Flight #1 come true: "One side, heroes, this is a job only we can handle"; and have a team that's not one of the above (preferably Alpha) who can handle a threat none of the others can.

      Me: No, you don't.
Josh: That one's George, and that one's Edna.
      Me: Okay, maybe you do.

      Welcome to the boards Arc-Raver!

I get your frustration - an intro to a new series would be great.

I think having AF come in as well as the Avengers would just have confused the issue and flooded it with characters; the book is an Avengers book after all and I think the point of having a new Omega Flight was to have new characters that readers old and new could know the complete backstory to.

I have a feeling we'll see more of Validator though.

I don't think that it's a case of Marvel not thinking highly of other countries; more that it's been proven that for whatever reason they don't sell. Maybe that's because the bulk of the North American comic reading market don't care for them. I have no idea.

I feel your pain Arc-Raver. I loved the Darkstar & the Winter Guard mini that David Gallaher did a couple years ago and was bummed when they were killed off in Amazing Spider-Man 676. But at least we got to see Big Hero 6 again in Amazing Spider-Man Ends of the Earth 1. Marvel must not hate all non American teams since Big Hero 6 is getting the movie treatment.

And I agree with Phil that we will probably see more Validator down the road in the Avengers. This new Avengers series feels similar to AF v2.
