LRM Online have been talking with writer/producer Simon Kinberg on the future of Fox's X-Franchise films, and they put a question to him regarding the possibility of seeing Alpha Flight on screen.
His answer:
“The thing that’s amazing about the X-Men is that there are hundreds or thousands of characters and a handful of really great teams, and Alpha Flight is one of them. It’s not something that we’ve been actively developing, but when you think about what the next phase is beyond the movies we have on our plate like Deadpool 2, New Mutants and whatever the next X-Movie is going to be, and potentially X-23. There are a lot of movies on the docket right now and Gambit, and X-Force would come after Deadpool 2. On the other side of those, then we have to start thinking about not just what are the sequels to the movies that already exist but what are the new universes that we can get into and Alpha Flight could be one of them. I wouldn’t want to stick them into an existing movie—I think they deserve to have their own.”
So... is this finally confirmation that our beloved characters are in the Fox domain rather than the MCU?
Given that the team has it's origins with X-Men, and technically the Fantastic Four, this would make sense.
Could Puck (and Marrina) still show up in the MCU with Captain Marvel in space, as (s)he debuted outside the pages of Uncanny X-Men?
Either way, will it actually happen?
The fact that the co-writer of the last few X-films is actually aware of the team's existence is a good thing, but it could just be an easy answer to a fan-service question.
Only time will tell!
UPDATE:
In a later interview with comicbook.com Kinberg said:
"We have a sense of where each of all of the existing characters go from Deadpool to New Mutants to the mainland X-Men movies to potentially even X-23," Kinberg said. "Then, there's other characters, like X-Flight, like Exiles... There's a lot of characters to mine going forward. We're still sort of in this phase where now we've completed the Wolverine story with Logan and we begin hopefully with New Mutants and eventually Gambit and continue with Deadpool."
Most people have taken the fact that he has referred to the team as 'X-Flight' to mean that the name has to be changed, to fit in with the Fox X-Verse and to avoid MCU clash issues, which could well be the case.
However, there is also the chance that the first time Kinberg had ever heard of Alpha Flight was in the previous interview with Latino Review, who specifically brought up the team (shown at the start of this article), and that he blagged his way through it, and then tried to remember and re-use the team's name in this later interview.
Again, only time will tell.
But I'm hoping X-Flight doesn't become a reality...
