There's something been bugging me lately about modern comics, and I think I've finally worked out what it is.

It came up partly because of the upcoming The Last Airbender movie, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. I've enjoyed most of his movies, but the tone and pacing are polar opposites to the cartoon.

Then somebody asked me to lend him recent DC or Marvel comics so he could get into them. The most recent thing I could lend him that was good enough was Young Avengers (he'd already read Runaways).

I think we've all noticed that comics follow the vagaries of fashion, same as anything else. The current fashion is ultra-realism; in comic book movies, I think the peak is The Dark Knight.

The thing these trends do is abuse the trope. It could be good once, on one thing, but they shove it on everything, until you're sick of it. Even though the realism one is doing the same, I'm still behind it.

Something I've noticed lately is the habit certain P.C. types have of trying to prove that they're picked on and victimised by showing how comic book members of whatever group they're P.C.ing this week are treated; every slight, every nastiness that happens to a member of that group becomes cause for a cry of 'bigotry!'

One particular list had members of their groups with horrible fates ranging from the worst -- dying several times within a few months, being generally beaten up and abused -- to the just plain bad --

OVERVIEW:
There are four separate stories in this issue. I will be reviewing one of them:
Boxes: Following the events of X-Force #23, Madison thinks back over his life with Diamond Lil.

I've listed the time period as current; it is, but it involves flashbacks over several months, since Utopia X, and even comments on their first meeting.

REVIEW:

First, the other stories in this issue aren't bad. I'm only skipping them because of a distinct lack of Alpha Flight content.

The artwork isn't my type. It does the job, but I like more detail and realism than this artwork contains; your results may vary. It's also flat in places ("Day 17" in particular).

The image we open with is of Diamond Lil as Snow White; but there won't be a Prince Charming to save her. Not even a dwarf (Puck, where are you?).
