WAT?
FP, you are breaking my heart!!!
How can you say such awful things about my Goblyn??
She is the ONLY AF Mantlo creation that I adore.
Does something bad happen that I haven't read yet??
Something bad pertaining to Goblyn or something she does.
Sorry, I should have specified.
I think the concept of Goblyn/Pathway was very good.
Not sure where in Mantlo's run her origin is so I won't mention it but it was definitely a decent, original idea.
The execution however didn't really play off. They were never utilized very well, by Mantlo or subsequent writers.
(I was thinking Back to Byrne's group. Then DreamQueen snuck up on me.)
I don't have either of those. :(
Kind of glad I didn't find From The Head To The Heart, then!
This one has a couple of lyrics that appeal to me as a Christian:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TCy9icPURg
But mostly has their usual sense of humour.
The only Leonard Cohen songs I have him singing are Tower Of Song, Avalanche, Suzanne, and I'm Your Man.
Unfortunately not Hallelujah. I like the John Cale version of that the best - that's the one you hear in West Wing and Shrek (movie, not album) and Scrubs (I think Scrubs, but I could easily be wrong about that one).
Yep!
... and now I'm singing The Night Santa Went Crazy to myself.
Not that I remember.
Agreed.

Morticia: My baby is sick and my husband is dying. Oh Mama, What shall I do?
Grandma: Well, you have a black dress.
I am TOO EXCITED.
She's the best thing so far about Mantlo's run, imo. She's the ONLY character that I wish could be part of the original line up.
I like Goblyn better than DreamQueen.
The Wizard (it's a long song, but if you have time, it's worth it. Fun song):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfSSmy8B5GA
One Inch Rock (super fun song, imo):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYHWMcLd3uw
What I love about their earlier stuff is Marc's ability to mix in that hippy-dippy-fantasy stuff with bee-bop fun rock and actual rock music. His voice tied it all together for me.
I will listen to this in a minute. Crazay holiday!
This is Nick Cave's "Hallelujah", but yeah, Leonard's is legend.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvQfMFTa_2k
:) There's an irony to you saying that about this particular song. When they originally recorded it, they hired some random woman to do backing vocals.
Later on, she became Madonna.
(I'm not sure, but I don't believe her recording of it exists.)

"You can't rewrite the Bible,
You can't sue Buddha for libel."
I like DreamQueen as a villain.
That was trippy!
Yep, fun! :)
I love that.
Maybe I should link you to the Eagles's Journy Of The Sorcerer sometime. It's instrumental, though.
Oooh... You mean the Nick Cave's Hallelujah that's actually one of his own songs and that's on one of my favourite Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds albums... Oh.

"My heart's a virgin, it ain't never been tried, 'coz, you know, I never cry."
~ Alice Cooper
I probably shouldn't say I LOVE Goblyn MORE than DreamQueen because if you said she's used more during Hudnall's run, then I haven't read enough of her yet. But I really do love Goblyn.
It's fantastic. There are only about 3 musicians whose vocals are such that they get a pass for every weird noise they sing. Marc Bolan is one of them.
Definitely my most favorite T.Rex song ever. So is "The Wizard", but for short songs, this one is my fave.
I can easily love instrumentals. They don't even have to be epic in length or difficulty with instrumentation. It just has to tell a story.
Yep, that is the one! :D
I, too, love that album. The first Nick Cave album I ever heard was "Murder Ballads". I know it's not his favorite, but that album is genius.
Back in the day, Ramones were doing an open-air concert in New York City, and some woman opened up for them doing pop songs. The record label exec (who had recently put Ramones on his label) came up to the Ramones, all excited, said what do you think of this girl, i just signed her and this is her first ever performance. They said, "Nah...I don't think she'll have a very long career, sorry." That girl was Madonna.
Goblyn IS a great character.
Who are the other two?
I mention that because we were specifically talking about vocals more than as a warning.
Here it is; it may sound VERY familiar to some listeners. Or may not:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbhAf62wfgE
Wow! Me, too!
I hadn't heard that story! I can imagine the Ramones not liking Madonna; they're such different musical styles.
(Really? Her opening for them? That's just wayyy off!)

"My Homer is not a communist. He may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, and a communist, but he is not a porn star."
~ Grandpa Simpson
Although not Alpha or comic-related, but something just doesn't seem quite right...
The thing about Goblyn, for me, is she ends up looking like the way she does but her father is the true monster, jeopardizing his wife and his children because of his hatred of mutants. I'll go home and check the exact issue, but Goblyn slices through Vindicator's force-shield? C'mon! Even Wolverine's adamantium claws couldn't do that (to Mac's original super-suit). [# 54, p. 11 - Vindicator actually let Laura inside the force-field, then Goblyn switched places with Laura and attacked.]
I love her even though Garry just tried to ruin her for me. :P
David Byrne and Sufjan Stevens
I will have to listen to that in a bit. After I reply to this, I am going to bed. :( I feel awful.
So odd how psychotic that album is and it made me fall in love with his music.
I had a gecko named Professor Orye and a tortoise named Stagger Lee.
Bahahahahahahaha!!!
Garry is trying to get banned. :P
Like I said, I named my cat after her! (Though he was a boy.)
I'm not familiar with Sufjan Stevens.
I know (of) Cat Stevens, but that may not be the same thing.
:( Sorry to hear that.
Do you know what it is?
~ Le Messor
David Byrne: I also wrestled under the name 'El Diablo'.
Lenny: Wasn't that Philip Glass?
David Byrne: Yeah, he wishes.
~ The Simpsons
Well, Goblyn isn't exactly 100% of this (Earth) world, if I am remembering correctly, so there may be a touch of supernatural to her claws that allow her to do what Wolverine can't.
And seriously, you should be glad that there's a character out there who CAN do something that Wolverine can't!
Okay, Crackity, if you're reading about DreamQueen, you probably know Goblyn's full origin by now, so...
She was conceived in this world, but raised in Liveworld. To me, that makes her OF this world, even if she IS connected to another. Her powers stem from being a mutant, not something to do with Liveworld.
But magic's involved, and that throws another monkey in the wrenchworks.
Lol! So true!

Garry is too awesome to be banned. His efforts are for nothing. :D

Not to be generic, but it's impossible for me to pick a song of his that would give you a good listen and idea of what his stuff is like. I have too many favorites.
I prefer his folkier/banjo/multi-instrumentation songs vs. his electronica stuff. In fact, his only album that I don't own is "Enjoy Your Rabbit" because I don't much care for electronica instrumentals.
Okay, I lied a little. This song has been on repeat the most in my head for a few weeks now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCb9jxqQYME
But mostly because it reminds me of being a kid, and how adult situations can be soooooo much bigger and more seemingly life threatening when you're a child.
Like the big old house in the neighborhood that suddenly becomes haunted by every scary creature imaginable. When really it's not. It's just a big house that isn't kept up and the realtor cannot sell, so city codes are broken and the lawn is overgrown and the house needs to be painted.
Something like that.
Do I know what your link is? I haven't listened yet. I will.
Or do I know what is making me feel awful?
My sinuses. It's either my sinuses or a summer cold.
<3!!!
Sorry, Garry; it's official: You're stuck with us.
Ah, so he's a solo artist... In the context, I'd kind of expected the front man for a band I do know!
I think I'll check that out this evening.
Please don't say that when I rewatched Cabin In The Woods last night!
That's what I meant.
I've been coughing for over two weeks now, but it's the middle of winter, so that's not as surprising.

"My job is so secret, even I don't know what I'm doing."
GARRY5EVAR.
You like classic rock, I'm not sure if you'd like him or not.
The everything of this song is why I love it, really.
He makes good use of background singers and his other musicians.
You'll be sleeping with the lights on now. :(
It's just all stuffed in the back of my throat.
It won't come out. :(
I just finished #63 tonight.
I am officially in Hudnall's run (as of #62, I believe), and just tell me ONE thing:
Does he make immediate attempts at correcting some of the foolishness Mantlo did (like Snowbirdsquatch? Heather? Like, the entirety of NOT Alpha?)?
Just tell me if he goes in and tries to fix that crap right away. Pretty please? You don't have to spoil anything by telling me yes or no. :D
Somewhat, yes. Nothing EVER gets completely reByrned until...well, never, really. But it does more resemble Byrne's team (altho not in writing style) in the Chaos War one-shot and beyond(ish).
But, there are still good parts in all these episodes, all these runs, all these volumes. You just can't ever go home again.
He had the folsky feel that led to some of the classics; sort of like Cat Stevens crossed with the theme to Adventure Time. :D
Along with some slightly disturbing lyrics!
I slept with a sword next to my bed that night, I'm telling you!
(Of course, I sleep with a sword next to my bed every night...)
It's like watching every horror movie at once.
Yeah, he definitely does.
Of course, there was a LOT of ruin to clean up.
~ Le Messor
"I’m not saying let’s go kill all the stupid people… I’m just saying let’s remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out."

*sniffle*
I figured as much. :(
Yeah, and even Mantlo gave me something good: Goblyn.
But that's the ONLY thing.
This is comforting. <3
He's fun. Or can be. He can also be serious, which is due at times.
To me, that song was about a trio of curious siblings who walked in on their dad having an affair. A real life situation that turned scary for them. And they made it bigger and scarier than it probably really was, hence the "He left us now for dead". Because I highly doubt his father had intentions of killing them, but at their age, they probably felt like he was going to.
That bad, huh?
Yes, Mantlo DID leave a lot of necessary clean-up. How long was Hudnall's run again?
I have to say that even though I wasn't a fan of alot of things that happened post-Byrne (i.e. anything to do with mystical worlds, magic, dimensions), I did enjoy mostt characters that were created. The way I view it is that we just didn't get to know them well enough. I was always intrigued by Pathway. Didn't she has some communication issue? Autism? I liked how they were all sort of growing in their own way. I quite enjoyed what happened to Purple Girl in Vol 4. I hope Marvel uses her in other ways.
I hope Purple Girl gets slaughtered.
By Northstar.
Eventually.
That character cannot disappear fast enough for my liking. I cannot stand her.
Ahhh, CJ and Tawmis, I went back and actually looked at/read # 54. I should never post before checking, first. One day, I'll learn...
I like "Garry the Effortless", although [unintentional] "The Bringer of Ruin" is probably more accurate. But this is CJ's thread, and I've griped about the Mantlo era enough...for awhile.:cry:
No, there is NEVER enough griping about the Mantlo era.
Remember: The Mantlo Era birthed Purple Girl who is the WORST character in the history of EVER.
We must remind ourselves and keep the hate strong so that we can keep each other fueled. Purple Girl's awfulness cannot be forgotten. Forgetting is how history repeats itself.
NO MORE PURPLE GIRL(S).
this post is mainly a bunch of BS. It's Monday, I deserve an allowance of BS.
You don't like DreamQueen? I knew you didn't like her as much as Goblyn, but that didn't have to mean not at all.
Then again, she's something evil.
I didn't get 'intent on killing them' from 'left for dead'; just, he walked out on the family, and if they lived or died after, so be it.
He stays until around about #90.
Then Nicieza is next, who CAN be a good writer.
Yes, she was autistic.
In fact, these comics were the first place I ran into that word - at the time, I thought it was just a cool character trait, not a serious condition.
I know better now.
~ Le Messor
(Frasier?) : "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
Woody: The same is true of Math!
~ Cheers
Eeek, I keep forgetting about her.
That's because you see it from an adult's perspective. Also: I got the feeling they thought he was going to kill them from other lyrics in the song "When my father ran undressed, he's pointing at my throat".
I BET YOU SEE A HAT, TOO, AND NOT AN ELEPHANT, HUH?
Huh. Then his run isn't THAT short. I was thinking it was shorter than that.
Quotes just keep getting better!
See, there's the problem right there. It's Gilded Lily you're supposed to try to forget.
Yah, he was definitely putting the fear of him into them.
On the other hand, the Good Son is a tiller. He has a tiller's hands...
If you want to wear the elephant like a hat, then on your head be it.
It was reasonable. It was short for the time - when Mantlo's AF wasn't that huge a comics run - but longer by today's standards, methinks.
Now I feel the pressure...
Well, it's what she did to Jean-Paul that makes you hate her, so you still have a chance with v2.
~ Le Messor
"My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular."
~ Adlai Stevenson
She's what I consider a crazy-fun villain, though.
*sigh*
Now I'm all distracted by your Nick Cave reference. <3
To wear the elephant, I'd have to wear the snake that has eaten him, and that is what makes this all impossible.
definitely longer by today's standards. Unless you're Bendis. Then his runs are unfortunately, entirely, too long.
I'm good at that.
A chance to hate her more, or a chance to...unhate her?
