Spoilers? I'm going to hopefully pick it up
edit: I ordered and I'm going to pick it up today 8)
I can't. Way too far to go and too much for me to order with my limited funds in the mail.
aw crud, didn't realize it came out today, and was already at the comic store...Maybe I can go back...
Ben
Got it...
[spoiler]
Stark tells US Agent, "you're going to Canada, joining the new Alpha Flight program as an american liaison". Of course US Agent objects, but a bodged capture of Purple Man prompted him to go to Canada and capture him as Purple Man fled to Canada. A possible reuniniting of Persuasion and Purple Man? me thinks so :)
[end spoiler]
Well that certainly makes sense as to why USAgent would be in the Flight.
Just added this to the Alphanex
[spoiler]
During the Civil War, US Agent is one of the top agents for the pro-registration act, and his stellar work has resulted in the capture of dozens of criminals. Stark then orders US Agent in an important missions stating, "you're going to Canada, joining the new Alpha Flight program as an american liaison. The Canadian government no longer has the assests to deal with the hordes of super-villians currently flooding their borders." Stark was also looking at it in a finacial point of view as Canada greatly contributes to America's oil, energy and infastructre. Of course US Agent objects, but a bodged capture of Purple Man prompted Walker to take the mission and to go to Canada as Purple Man fled to the Great White North.
[end spoiler]
soooooooooo, does that mean:omega flight is going to be acting like the pro-reg heroes in america? not only fighting the bad guys, but also making sure the good guys register? if so, i have no idea why julia carpenter would join the team. although i could see a very interesting dynamic between arachne and usagent butting heads over the subject if there is no registration in canada.
Nice to see that from the very start, Oeming has been true to his word that Omega Flight will have ties to Alpha Flight. I certainly hope that he intends to show a reunion of sorts with the character seen in this issue and one of Alpha's old members - especially considering to my recollection, they have never officially met, although each knows about the other. Despite the fact that the reunion would not necessarily be a nice one, it would make for an interesting read.
And not to go off on a tangent, but it would certainly be nice someday to see other reunions occur - such as Puck & Puck II, Marrina & Mar, etc. Alpha fans have seen so much strife in past stories that it would be nice to highlight some of these more happy events as well...
to Varo:
I honestly don't know, but looking forward to see the outcome.
Okay, I'll prolly won't get this until the weekend, but am curious as to what explanation Mike Oeming has to give ?Quote:

Ah, so Us Agent is not going to be a happy member. Good. That will make it more like team family thing, with different points of view like that and whoever Spiderwoman is. Then Talsiman and Guardian with Beta Ray Bill form the core and keep the other two on task.
Should be interesting when Mr. Oeming has the team trying to keep US Agent out of the loop so they can keep some sovereignty or something.
Hmm.. I wonder if we'll see a lil Persuasion come into play then...
That's what I was thinking as well, she still is one of the few that has her powersQuote:

A good deal of our energy and infrastructure is tied directly to Canada. Their security is a top priority for SHIELD. We need you to protect those interests.
Yep, I thought that was a nice touch. After this very breif story, I want more.
Especially on the last page it states continued in "Omega Flight #1"
i have to be honest, this has me extremely excited for the launch of omega flight, how this is all going to tie together will be very interesting.
Me too. Even though like some of you, I won't get to read "Choosing Sides", I figure the ussue was well written. And now we know that [spoiler]US Agent is pro-SRA and being told to go to Canada and that should cause some friction in the team. I figure Arachne, if she is truly the one on side, will have something to say about him. Guardian and Talisman will be great on the team with that dynamic, and it will make Beta Ray Bill a more complete character when he has to clobber US Agent so that the rest of Omega Flight can help "Mighty Avengers", if that's the anti-sra team name. 8)
I just hope Guardian and Talisman are who we hope they are.
Mighty Avengers are pro SRA: Act (Members consist of: Black Widow, Aries, Sentry, Wonderman, Mrs.Marvel, Iron Man...and probally some more I'm forgetting)
I didn't like it, I thought that saying: "Now you're going to Canada because I said so." Was a pretty big copout story-wise.
On top of that the decision to send USAgent doesn't make sense. Canada for some reason has alot of supervillains all of a sudden, and can't take care of itself... And we get USAgent? I'm pretty sure that the addition of this guy isn't going to make a whole hell of a difference. He's like Captain America lite and without the leadership qualities... Maybe if they had sent Warbird (I like the name better than Ms. Marvel) or tried to convince Wolverine? Like... Send people who have saved the world a few times?
"Peak Human" isn't going to do a whole hill of beans and will amount to little next to the raw power of Beta Ray Bill.
I seriously hope that half of the squad isn't going to be unwilling.
(I did like the Major Mapleleaf reference though....)
Side note: If Oeming wants a realistic portrayal of USAgent in Canada he will get a pretty nasty reception by the public that won't go away.
Also: I always assumed that despite the fact that Alpha flight was the only superhero team in Canada that there were more people than that who were actually superhuman? I don't see how its possible to have so many American Superhumans and so few Canadians (who could be put in to help with security.) Canada is one tenth the size of the U.S. not one thousandth.
I may be unfair to Mr. Oeming in my assessment, but I can say that I whole heartedly believe that this is an extremely unlikely way for USAgent to come across the border, and does not accurately reflect the general culture of Canada. Of course this is just my opinion and I'm sure alot of people will disagree... But random willingness to accept a Symbol of America by a country which is really quite sensitive about American/Canadian sovereignty doesn't wash. At the very least the government would have requested a name change.
/rant off. I'm sorry to break the positivity of the thread.
^ It may not reflect Canada's viewpoint well, but it's typical of my country.
"You. Yes you. Go keep an eye on our foreign allies."
"But... if they're our allies... shouldn't we wait and see if they ask? You know, not foist an unwanted advisor on them?"
"No. Besides., I also want you to make sure they don't get all cozy with the people we don't like. Now run along, there's a good soldier."
FWIW, I think you're right. Canada probably won't be happy about having a U.S. uberpatriot nutjob forcibly placed on their team. And therein lies the root of a potentially interesting story conflict.
Personally, I cannot wait for Omega Flight. I hope that it is not swamped in the launch of another Avengers book.
I am presuming that Canada will have no registration act? USAgent is going to find himself outclassed when it comes to the great Beasts(whom I hope turn up!!). The presence of Talisman suggests that we may get back to fighting threats other than your run of the mill super villain of the week.
I hope Spider-Woman(whichever 1 it is!) kicks USAgent ass!!
What was the reference? 8)Quote:

2) iron man tells usagent to go to canada to help the canadians because......tony has a vested interest in landing oil contracts as well as big time government contracts to help build weapons to ward off the legion of villians jumping the border and to benefit himself, and usagent sees this as a way to make a name for himself with a fresh start and prove everyone wrong about who he is, plus iron man has dirt on him as well as the fact he botched the purple man capture.
i know this board is pretty much divided on the new series, some want the originals back in a alpha flight book, and some are stoked for this new series, i have to admit, i am biased and looking forward to the new series.
but i have read oemings books before i knew he was going to write omega, and i just know and trust he will do this book justice.
@Varo,
Hmmm... I never thought about it from that angle, (#2) which is weird since I started a thread over at the CBR speculating that Tony was becoming profit motivated. I still don't like it.
USAgent: "Not this time Stark. I serve Uncle Sam, Not Major Mapleleaf!"Quote:

About MML, I partially hope you're wrong. I think his mentioning also has more to do for it being such a stupid name, since he also mentions Duddly Do-Right (wait didn't the original MML serve the Invaders, much like Walker? That could be where he got the name also). I originally wanted Lou to be in the suit because he's the only thing from the last series I enjoyed. Now that I think about it, I really want Mac to finally have a chance to show some character.
Oooo! That's a good speculation! I don't think it'll actually happen, but it would be really freakin' cool. I do think it's just saying Major Mapleleaf because that's the only name for Canadians like how Uncle Sam represents Americans. I suppose the only other name like Uncle Sam would be Dudley Do Right but... it doesn't have quite the ring of Major Mapleleaf.Quote:

plus if mml came back and not the rest of the off-panel dead alphans, they would have some splainin to do.
Why the bashing of US Agent, guy beat Piledriver (Wrecking Crew) in two hits, and even beat Ronan the Accuser. Guy is underated.
But still a jerk. It's not only power that make the person or the character. :PQuote:

Of for sure he took over leadership of the Avengers/X-Men, because they didn't think of the little people. He maybe a dick, but he cares.Quote:

I hate USAgent, but I think I'm in the "love to hate him" camp now. He's certainly being set up to be a friction character, and a Flight without friction just wouldn't ring true.
Also, Stark's motivation seemed fine enough to me. Why NOT sent USAgent? He's loyal to the SRA, a proven fighter and an obvious symbol. Plus him being in Canada keeps him at arm's length of Stark, who doesn't personally like him and as such probably doesn't want him hanging around NYC to join the post-CW Avengers.
I like the fact, US Agent keeps a portrait of his parents inside his shield.
I agree, it was a nice touch. Shows another side of him. I love it when writers/artists add the little things like that to a book.Quote:

Yep and it looks like he modified his shield to resemble the one in New Invaders that has the names of victims from terrorist attacks engraved into itQuote:

Unfortunately not Mik, it would seem we're living in a dictatorship :-) While all the time I thought we were an anarcho-syndicalist commune. Were we take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. with all the decision of that officer having to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.Quote:
