Good issue, and what form did Snowbird take? and was that electricity coming out? Thats new. Loved the bear coat Shaman wore. Holy Ranark serves the Great Beasts? AWESOME!!! I was right he gave Department H the Great Beast bone. Art is incredible, I wonder why Walter cant access his powers, and now the guessing game begins who really is behind Unity. Seems like the Master to me as he is indeed older then Ranark

Yeah ,the lightning breath is a whole new awesome. It was hard to see that it was coming from Snowbird's mouth in that first panel, but in the 2nd panel you can clearly see it. Who is the older one, older than Ranark? Someone damn old, since he's a very old old guy. Whoever it is, he's behind the whole thing. It was sort of weird when Mac asked for help from the USA teams, but also nice to see Alpha Flight integrated with the rest of the Marvel Universe, if that plays out. Great job on the Ranark re-design, too!

So can Snowbird just take any form now? As there is no Canadian animal that can do what she did haha.
I wonder how old Ranark is? Dreamqueen is 800 yrs old, Master of the World is 40,000 years old, Great Beasts are older them all (but we know their not behind Unity) and Llan is older then them. My bet is the Master
Yeah Im a big fan of Ranark's new design, he was very bland and boring before.

What about Witchfire's father? How old would he be? Isn't he like the devil or something?

Was the drawing at Ranark cave a depiction of Tanaraq? perhaps linked to Walter not being able to transform?
Another terrific issue!
Marrina is awesome.
I just wish they didn't waste four pages on the "Castle" preview.

a few observations on this issue:
* i love marina's new attitude. love it. she may wind up being my favorite after this mini series is over.
* snowbird acting more like a goddess was very nice to see.
* the art was terrific yet again.
* we now know who the shaded out figure is for next issue, i really hope its a temporary thing.
* ranark (sp?) looks awesome and kind of freaked me out as creepy as he is.
* i think its becoming evident who's behind all of this.
again, as soon as i finish reading, i want more. the creative team seems to be hitting it's stride, the art is phenomenal, the characterizations are spot on, everything i remember about this team and loving the characters is on display.
something tells me when this is collected in tpb and when the series is over it's going to be a unbelievable read.
Absolutely loving this new series... the best version since Byrne. Also the best artwork since the Byrne run. Cannot wait for the next issue.
Great issue, things are really beginning to move now. The story and artwork are topnotch once again, and the old continuity is not only being revived, it's being built upon.

I took what Ranark said to be referring to the Master of the World. He's older than Ranark, and he's "of the Earth" (or world), plus, if you recall the last few issues of Vol. 1, the Master had brainwashed Mac so that he turned against AF to the point that he was willing to attack Heather. Obviously, he's improved the technique since then.
I'm not sure that Snowbird breathing lightning is necessarily a power of the animal form she took (unless she took the form of a thunderbird), but may be her using her godly powers while transformed. IDK, what do you guys think?
Thanks, I'm glad I finally joined. Been a die-hard Alphan since the beginning... yes, I am that old. Never thought anyone could bring back the magic that Byrne breathed into this team, but this new series is amazing. Great story, exceptional artwork... hope they keep it coming. :)
Oooooh so she transformed into the mythical Thunderbird? Very cool! I hope we see more mythical transformations from Snowbird.
That would be very cool. If she could then I vote for the Sisiutl.

I think it's safe to say it's not the GB's, as Ranark said to Heather: "You serve the one of the Earth older than I," and "But be warned mortal woman, by waking me you wake my masters, the Great Beasts of the North." Sounds like whoever it is controlling Heather, they aren't connected to the GB's. This is why I think it's the Master of the World, he's older than Ranark, and he's an Earthling, or "of the Earth." Plus, he's attempted to manipulate Canada through political machinations once before, and in that same instance he brainwashed Mac so that he turned against Alpha Flight.

Another great issue. I havent been this happy to visit my lcs in a long while. Still quite a bit of buzz and talk about the series as well. I received the Fear Itself cover with Aurora's split face on the cover however they did have the variant cover which was already priced at $12.99 which I found interesting. First time I had actually seen any of the variant covers on the shelves.

I get the impression that the Aurora that returned to the bar is the cheerleader for UNITY we saw. AF has a sleeper in their ranks. A quick question, when Heather goes see Ranark, she pops up right on location as such. I'm sure it's been discussed, but is that whole setting yourself at rest from the Earths rotation teleporting trick that accurate now. I thought it was fairly random where you ended up?

I've just had a thought about Aurora's new sexual abuse angle (confirmed in this issue).
The nuns' abuse wouldn't work on her: she's not holding a grudge against them.
(Which isn't to say there wasn't a better way to handle it.)
Don't nit! Don't nit! Didn't you learn from my 0.1 review?
- Le Messor
"One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know. Then we tried to remove the tusks. The tusks. That's not so easy to say. Tusks. You try it some time. As I say, we tried to remove the tusks. But they were embedded so firmly we couldn't budge them. Of course, in Alabama the Tuscaloosa, but that is entirely ir-elephant to what I was talking about."
~ Groucho in Animal Crackers
I did read your review Mick, but since then I've read thousands of more words (some even in the right order(memory loss)) :-)
I sure like how #1 to #3 have been drawn and written, now that I have mine and have read them!;)
I do wonder who is behind all of this, taking advantage of the damage done by the Serpent and Hammer bunch. And who is Ranark referring to? Would he recognize Llan or the Master's 'scent'? And who 'of Earth' would want/risk bringing back the Great Beats? Would the Master not care about the Great Beasts? 'Of the Earth' or 'Of the earth'? Could be either. Older, maybe the Master or Dreamqueen, Dreamqueen would have this level of influence and mind control, the Master not so much. A puzzle to debate, and figure out.
Great to see Puck and Guardian being used as true heroes, not silly or hanging back.
I'm worried for Purple Girl though. Was causing brain damage really necessary? She's the only non-Byrne character we've seen revisited!
I would think that as long as you have all the variables (Earth's rotation speed, latitude, distance between point A, and point B, and the amount of time needed to travel that distance at that speed) you could just let the suit's computer handle the calculations, and pop you right on target. Perhaps in the beginning it was random, but with the technology they would have now, I would think they could accurately determine the jaunt.
After all, if Tony Stark can constantly upgrade his armour, why can't Mac upgrade the suit once in awhile?
The precursor to the warp drive I suppose. Actually makes sense. Cheers
I have this terrible habit of reading stuff, but my therapist is helping with that.
Adding external teleportation to the powers of Guardian is a nice touch.
On a totally different subject. When Vindicator is speaking to Ranark, she says something along the lines of serving someone, who likes Ranark has much to Vindicate. Just wondering if this reinforces the premise that 'The Master' is behind this, or points elsewhere?
I don't think you can use that spell on yourself, can you?
He doesn't have the loyalty of a Hufflepuff - just ask Liz.
Ravenclaw suits him, I think.
Um... no? Despite the cover (done for effect), I don't think her eyes ever changed colour before - which I'm pretty sure doesn't happen with MPD.
- Le Messor Q: How many Psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One, but the light bulb has to want to change.

Yes, this is the first time this eye color thing is being used to show the different personalities. I was just thinking, logically, it should be Jeanne-Marie with the blue eyes, because she is the original and Jean-Paul has blue eyes as well. Aurora would then be gold-eyed, because she is the newcomer. But then, this could get tricky later on when Aurora ends up the winner in the end and we have to change her eye color to gold permanently, so... I guess I'm ok with it the other way around.

Ah. I misunderstood the nature of your comment; you're saying it'd be better to have them swap the colours they currently have, rather than asking for different colours now.
Yes, I agree that Aurora makes more sense having the golden eye. Then she could be played by Tina Turner.
In jello.
But I digress; Aurora's the one who dressed in gold, after all. And faced Gilded Lily. And dates golden-furred Sasquatch.
She's a much more gold character than Jeanne-Marie (who's cold and blue).
- Le Messor
"I'd love to, but my crayons all melted together."
It's a nice visual way of differentiating between the two characters for the reader's sake.
It may be a purely metaphorical thing for our benefit rather than actually happening.
Yeah, that's what I figured when I saw the cover.

After rereading I am a little perturbed as to which Aurora joined Alpha at the bar. Last image before her return suggested to me that Jeanne Marie was in asendence. So...?
