I'm hoping that's just the unfortunate timing of the preview ending and that it's related to his power set.

Seems to be. I’ve read the issue and full statement is “.....like he’s about to die....and about to live. I should find out more”

Maybe one of his evolutionary stages is going to die. That's why there's one big Death icon and three much smaller Death icons surrounding him in that panel.

I also recall he used to be able to split into three. His powers seem to have been adjusted. He can only be one stage at a time in this issue. In any case the guy hasn't been seen since 1994 (Alpha Flight #130) so maybe a few things changed in 26 years.

The one big death and three smaller deaths could symbolise the fact that if he dies, he takes three others with him.
