Default More New Byrne Alpha Flight

This one is an end paper blank page (6" x 9") inside a bound collection of Uncanny issues and is based on Dave Cockrum's cover for Uncanny 121.

See it larger (B/W) here, http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/f...=1&totPosts=15

He's done better. Birdie and Storm are especially blah.

    Is there a smaller version?

I have to agree that this piece looks really rushed / lacklustre. He was either in a hurry or wasn't too interested in it. It's got his style to it, but none of his usual energy.

Sassy's legs are way out of proportion. And that's saying alot for him already. Looks like a quick sketch.

I wonder how much we can blame the inker? I don't recognise the name.
And, how big was this pic meant to be seen?
Also, I'm wondering if that Sas leg is out of proportion, or it's a perspective thing?

Great, I'm turning into a fanboy, even defending an artist I like when I can see they've turned out a bit of

Sassy's leg is totally in proportion....what you're seeing is his right knee, shin and foot(the thigh is mostly hidded behind the knee fur).

Isn't this based on the cover he did for the first X-Men Alpha tussle back in the Claremont/Byrne days of UXM? The fight at Calgary?

First thing last... Sas leg isn't out of proportion, that's a coloring error. (oops!)

Byrne 'inked' himself, the original is black-white. The sketchy drawings are on 6 x 9 paper inside bound books... end papers are those blank pages that bookend a books contents between the actual covers.

He had his collections of Uncanny bound in book form, these are the end page drawings he's done because he was selling his to private collectors. This is just one of the drawings.

On his site he's mentioned how hard it was to do these because the paper takes ink badly (tends to bleed) and it's not easy working on pages inside a bound book because the surface is hard to keep flat.

Several of the images, like this one (Cockrum's cover to Uncanny 121), are based on covers for issues he did interiors for but someone else did the cover art. Here's a look at the Cockrum/Austin cover:
