Very little is known about The Chess Set, but it would seem that the Alphan Puck had confronted them before their existence became known to the rest of Alpha Flight. They are close associates of the second villian to carry the name 'Brass Bishop'. The Chess Set came to the notice of Alpha Flight, while they were investigating the disappearence of the bodies of Silver and Auric, two former members of Gamma Flight. Using information gathered by Puck and Spider-Man (who had briefly allied himself with Alpha Flight), the team, along with Spider-Man and Nemesis were led to an abandoned airfield. There, the Brass Bishop organised an auction to sell the energies of The Sphinx contained in the decomposed bodies of Silver, Auric and the unconscious form of a research scientist (Hedison). The Chess Set seemed to be employed in a security role, guarding the bodies and unconscious scientist.
When Alpha Flight and allies attacked the assembled super villian audience, who had been invited by The Brass Bishop, Nemesis confronted The Chess Set. Nemesis chopped off King Coal's arm, but he still remained in the fight. Nemesis also damaged the device containing the energies of The Sphinx, causing an explosion. These energies escaped and took on a luminescent humanoid form, which described itself as New Life and said it was everything that Hedison, Silver and Auric had been, but much more also. It also said it was very angry with all that had been done. Generating two blasts from its hands, it incapacitated The Brass Bishop and Chess Set, stating its intention to kill them. Vindicator II managed to dissuade it from killing anyone and New Life left. Alpha Flight took every incapacitated villain, including the Chess Set, into custody for incarceration in The Vault.
