|First Appearance||Alpha Flight vol.1 #1|
Richard Easton was a young archaeologist working on a dig north of the Arctic Circle. After months of not finding anything, Easton was the lucky one to make the first significant find, an ancient headband. While sleeping that night, Easton was awakened by some sort of a call. He followed the urging to the find tent, and put on the headband he had discovered earlier that day. The instant he put on the headband, the Northern Gods appeared. Nelvanna, the Goddess of the Northern Lights, asked Easton to provide her the "seed of humanity" for her to give birth to a champion for Earth against the ancient evil of the Great Beasts. She transformed into a beautiful blonde woman to appeal to his senses, and the two conceived the demi-goddess Narya, later to be called Snowbird. Once faced with reality again, Easton found the archeological dig he had worked to be filled in, and was informed by his former coworkers that he had been gone for nine years. The knowledge he gained in the realm of the gods was too much for his human mind to handle. He panicked, accused his former workers of being "Agents of The Great Beasts" and of trying to steal his headband. In paranoid fear, Easton ran off into the northern wilderness.
Fifteen years later, now completely lost in insanity and obsessed with death, Easton vowed to get even with those who had laughed at him and called him crazy. Slowly, Easton traced out a massive form in the arctic sod. Once again he put on the ancient headband. His life force was used to fuel the spark that brought forth the great beast Tundra.
