History
Ranaq the Great Devourer is one of the Great Beasts who were imprisoned long ago in their own dimension. Ranaq broke free at the beginning of the 20th Century when a human, Zebediah Chase, forced a native mystic to breach the dimensional barrier. Ranaq tricked Chase into becoming his new host. A time-travelling contingent of Alpha Flight (Puck, Shaman, Snowbird and the newest member, Talisman) kept Ranaq busy until a young man, Lucas Stang, shot Chase with a bullet containing a magical item to disrupt magic. He buried the body and was told that he would live a hundred years until he would face Ranaq again. One hundred years later, an extremely elderly Lucas Stang faced Ranaq. Shaman and Talisman faced Ranaq in the form of Lucas Stang's great-granddaughter, Emily and defeated him.
He appeared again when summoned by Pestilence to battle against Alpha Flight, but was ultimately sent back to the Realm of the Beasts by Talisman.
Powers/Abilities
The full extent of his powers were never stated, but his strength is born of sorcery ancient as winter and black as night. He is one of the Gods of the Elder Night. The Great Beasts are older than the Earth, but upon entering our dimension they must be stopped within twenty minutes or they will never be stopped at all. It was said "there is no one in all the world with power enough to truely harness and control a Great Beast"Death and Decay: The Great Beasts were embodiments of death on Earth when it was first commencing to come alive. The Great Beasts rule over death and decay, and can emplore death and decay as a weapon against mankind.
Dimensional Interface: Ranaq can control and manipulate even food to where "its replicating itself at an impossible rate, it must be functioning as a dimensional interface, siphoning energy from the spirit plane and instantly converting that energy into ectoplasmic matter" and if unchecked could become two-directional, draining from the plant entirely
Human Host: Ranaq can take a human host to channel his magic and power.
Magical Blasts: Ranaq can send forth powerful magical blasts. When he battled Talisman, they commented on how powerful these blasts were. "As the rampart power bristles and cracks across the room. Reality bends, warps, twists, screaming like a living thing stretched on a rack."
Magical Manifestation: Ranaq has the ability to summon a magical manifestation of himself that he uses to do his bidding for him. They have been shown to be sent to the Earth realm to do battle, while the true Kariooq remains in the Realm of the Beasts. It's unlikely they possess all the Beasts true power.
Magical Summons: Ranaq has the ability to make or create anything appear with a simple thought.
