History

Michael Twoyoungmen was one of Canada's top surgeons, who had given up his ancestral heritage for a wife and family in the white man's world. When he discovered that his wife Kathryn was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he dedicated himself to healing her, promising his daughter, Elizabeth that he would not let her mother die. When he failed to rid his wife of the cancer, and she died, Elizabeth hated him for not saving her. Elizabeth ended up moving in with Heather Macneil (Later to be Hudson) and her large family. Michael spent years in seclusion, until he finally opened a gift his grandfather had left for him after he died, which was the same day that his wife died. The gift contained a skull and a medicine pouch. His grandfather's spirit was tied to the earthly plane by his skull which was his gift to Michael. Michael's grandfather's spirit then trained him to become a powerful mystic and to use the pouch which was also one of his parting gifts.

One of Michael's first tasks as Shaman was to birth Narya, who was the child of the Northern Goddess Nelvanna and a human man. After birthing Narya, Shaman was given the task for raising and training her to become earth's guardian against the coming of The Great Beasts. When Heather MacNeil Hudson and her husband, James, met Michael and Narya, Heather was able to discover their secrets and she and her husband convinced the two to join Department H, and in turn Alpha Flight.

When Alpha Flight's funding was cut, Michael agreed to remain a member of Alpha Flight. After the original Guardian's death, he helped Heather lead the team. Michael finally met up with his daughter again when she sought out his help in solving a mystical puzzle. During this time Elizabeth begun to developed a newfound respect for her father, and while the two had their problems, they were for a time getting along. As Shaman, Michael discovered that his daughter was destined to take the mantle of Talisman, giving her the potential to be one of Earth's greatest mystics.

When Shaman's medicine pouch was turned inside out by Delphine Courtney it began to pull in everything around it. Michael had a choice of saving either Snowbird, or Talisman from being sucked into the dimensional nexus inside the pouch. He made the choice of saving Snowbird first, as Talisman's great mystical powers would protect her inside the nexus, where Snowbird would not be so lucky. After saving Snowbird, Shaman did not have enough time to prevent his daughter from being sucked into the nexus. An entity known as The Beyonder returned Elizabeth to earth from within the pouch, however she was extremely angry with her father for not saving her, much as he had not saved her mother. Elizabeth also felt her father had tricked her into taking on the power of Talisman, not realizing she would not be able to remove her circlet, and basically was giving up her humanity.

After Michael was unable to save his daughter and the heartbreak of loosing her love again, he lost total confidence in himself. Without his confidence, Shaman lost his powers. After a period of isolation, the spirit of Michael's grandfather returned to him. Michael was lead into a pilgrimage in the barren lands to discover if he truly had any power within, rather than relying on his medicine pouch. What he did not realize a the time, was the ability to use the pouch was a power within. After completing a series of tests, Michael gained the respect of the spirits of the land. Though he could not command them as Talisman did, he could beg their assistance. He also gained an eaglet familiar.

When the evil being called Pestilence managed to remove Talisman's circlet from her brow, Shaman was forced to put it on to save Alpha Flight. With the circlet came the powers of Talisman, and the ability to command the spirits to do his bidding. Since Michael was not the one destined to be Talisman, it stripped all traces of his personality and humanity away. He refused to return the powers to Elizabeth when she asked for him to do so. She had abused the powers, and until she proved herself worthy she would not have the tiara back. After Snowbird died in a battle with Pestilence, Michael felt no reason to remain with Alpha Flight, and dwelt for some time in the spirit realm. In the face of a conflict with The Dreamqueen, Elizabeth convinced Michael that she was ready to reclaim her role as Talisman. This being done, Michael returned to being Shaman, and regained his humanity. As Shaman, he began to use his medicine pouch once more, being more confident in himself than he had been for some time.

Michael later lead many of the original Alphans against the corrupt Department H who had attempted to kill James Hudson and intentionally infected Diamond Lil with a dangerous toxin. The original Alphans did battle with new team, eventually, the two teams worked together and, seeing a new administration was seemingly in place at Department H, Shaman, with the originals became active Alphans again.

Shaman has recently taken on an apprentice in Chuck Moss, a powerful young mystic known as Earthmover. When he along with the rest of Alpha Flight investigated a potential plodex attack, they were all captured except for Sasquatch. Sasquatch lead an Alpha Flight strike force he had assembled and freed Shaman and his companions. He and the others involved decided to transport the plodex eggs back to their home world to give them a chance to build a fresh civilization.

When Sasquatch's new Alpha Flight team made the mistake of altering history, a copy of Shaman from an alternate time line was drawn into the present(while he was still in space). Most recently Shaman was involved in the battle against The Collective. He and most of his teammates were slain in the ensuing battle.

He and the rest of Alpha Flight were revived during the Chaos War, but unlike most of the revenants they survived the whole affair.

Shaman is currently serving alongside his once and future teammates.
