I like these oddball pseudo-appearances. Is that Fury as in Nick?

WHICH Nick Fury? The classic comic character, or the Samuel L. Jackson movie version? Or an LMD?

Phil

1994, so classic.

Le Messor

Yeah, going by the year it had to be David Hasselhoff, not Samuel L. Jackson.

Yar! And What If... #100 has a cover to Alpha Flight v2 #1, on the floor in front of Rogue. The artist spread out the wraparound spread so the entire v2 team appears. It's kinda blurry tho.

Phil
01-17-2014, 05:39 AM
Yeah, I remember that being discussed a decade or so ago (!) and I think we decided it was a bit too meta to count as an actual appearance appearance, plus it wasn't new artwork, but it was a nice touch.

It's nice to see that Alpha Flight members, past and present, are out there saving the world with the rest of the heroes instead of just being cannon fodder like they normally are. Why was she in New York though? Is she an Avenger now? They all seem to be pouring out of Avengers Tower. Anyway, I used the digital comic code that it comes with and took this screenshot. Now we have a better image, although the other one wasn't too bad either.

I think it's just a case of all the non-mutant heroes gathering where the villain happens to be to save the day. Captain Britain's there too.

Although saying that SubMariner's there... so Puck got taken with the mutants but Namor didn't!

Well, yeah, if you consider one tenth the price 'cheaper'.

The brand new price is absurd on amazon, mind.

I went to check that, seeing if it were 'Any Book' or something selling it (I keep seeing them on everything I look at on Amazon, for about twice the next lowest price, and wondering how they stay in business, which 'Vault Media' is doing. Hmm... $5, or $500... I'm torn; which should I pick?). Turns out, the cheapest, ridiculously-overpriced new seller has the same name I do. :(

Noticed that you have Wolverine (2010) #6 on your list with Puck being in the issue. Recently purchased the issue without looking first and could not find Puck in the issue at all. Thinking maybe I had the wrong issue (since the date in the comic was 2011) I went hunting for another Wolverine #6 published in 2010 (unsuccessfully). Went back to your list and noticed that you had listed #2-5 as well - which seem to refer to when Wolverine and Puck were in Hell. This matches up with the issues you have listed (even though all have 2011 dates. I rechecked #6 for Puck again and still can't find him. Is this the right issue/storyline and if so where in the world is Puck.

Phil

Thanks for the info. Now it makes sense, and I notice that Wolverine #6 is now off your list. By the way, what are the requirements for inclusions in the appearance section? I have a list of other "comics" that have Alpha Flight shown, but many of them are just showing panels from previous comics, for example - some of the Marvel Spotlights, Marvel Previews, Marvel Ages, etc.

Original Sin #0 came out today with a small cameo from The Master, Puck and Guardian in an insane 2pg spread of awesome. $4.99 price point not very good, Marvel. Usually #0 issues go for $0.99, right?

Also check out the Paolo Rivera variant which is a darn cool image of the Watcher.

I haven't seen DC or Marvel publish 99 cent comic books for a looooong time (unless they are digital first books). Today's Justice League United #0 was $3.99. At least Original Sin #0 was 33 pages long for $4.99. It was basically a double sized issue of Nova. Any current Sam Alexander Nova fans will enjoy this Original Sin "prologue." I did.

Now after I typed this, I remember Marvel republishing the first issue of Strikeforce Morituri for 99 cents back in 2012. And other comic companies have published first issues for a $1.00. Aspen Comics had a 10 for 10 initiative last year where the first issues for books like Fathom and Jirni were only $1.00

They don't tend to.

Infinity had the free FCBD prologue (which was reprinted in #1 anyway(?) with #1 being $4.99)
Age Of Ultron had the free FCBD #0.1 (which was a reprint of Avengers #12.1 which was $2.99)
Avengers Vs X-Men #0 was $3.99
Fear Itself had Book Of The Skull which was $3.99
Siege had Siege:The Cabal which was $3.99

The Master, Puck, and Guardian are Flashback? Now I'm confused...

No actual Flashback aka Gardner Monroe in issue. The Master, Guardian, and Puck scene is just one of many flashback, future, and alternate reality scenes.

The only times I remember Guardian and Puck fighting the Master together were AF 130 v1 and AF 8 vol 4 but they were never together in same fight scene with the Master. So maybe this is an alternate reality scene? The closest scene I can recall would be Puck and synth Mac fighting a synth Master in AF 2 v2. Now I'm being nitpicky.

Fear Itself had Book Of The Skull which was $3.99
Siege had Siege:The Cabal which was $3.99

I was referring to other publishers. I recall Greg Pak's Battlestar Galactica #0 selling for $0.25 (Dynamite Entertainment) and StarCraft #0 given away for free (Wildstorm) and Dungeons&Dragons #0 selling for $1 or free at NYCC2010 (IDW). The concept is that you give a promo comic to tease in new readers for a low price. Makes more sense to me than starting over at #1 every 8 issues. I wish I could remember more examples of this situation.

Chris
04-25-2014, 02:03 AM

I can see what you're saying, and Marvel have done similar with Origins Of Siege and the 25c issues they did in the earlt 2000's, but OS #0 is more of a prologue than a promo-tease.

Now... this is a strange one...

I've recently been catching up on a lot of New Warriors and in Volume 3 #3 I discovered something that's... possibly... an appearance.

Now, back when Alpha Flight Volume 3 was running Skottie Young was hired to draw two covers for the Dave Ross fill-in issues. Only one of these saw print; his Sasquatch cover to #8.
The Marvel Previews magazine with the solicit to #7 showed work in progress of his cover that never actually graced the issue in the end. (I've been searching up & down my house for the issue [which actually led me to find some other stuff I'll post elsewhere] and can't find it and I think the scan of it was either lost to the sands of time when we moved the site to this format, or stuck on an ancient hard-drive in my loft somewhere; but for reference the cover was

I believe that Skottie may have included it in one of his convention artbooks at the time and sold prints of it, but it never actually saw publication other than that.

Also it's a tiny cameo but all Thanos is big now because of the move thingy so it's bigger than just Puck.

Mooney is correct! There's a splash page with some Alphans, a posed image with Northstar, a very large Sasquatch, Puck, Aurora with a glowing fist (?!), Guardian (with um, something on his costume, something which is definitely not a maple leaf), and Snowbird. In the enemies section, Wild Child appears :) but wearing his Age of Apocalypse costume. It's a strange book with little pull out cards and papers and posters, kind of like a pop up book made out of post-its.

Oh and Alpha Flight makes a cameo in the very last :( issue of Comic Heroes magazine: http://www.sfx.co.uk/2014/07/18/comic-heroes-24-now-on-sale/ It's $19.99USD which is a bit steep but you do get 164 pages.

Just found my list that I mentioned a few months ago. Will be double-checking what is actually in the issues as I had only written down who was there - not whether it was as a new appearance vs. reprint of old pic. I do have a verified appearance. All of these comics were anniversary issues with borders of characters. Puck is in the lower left corner - verified by the Official Marvel Index of the Marvel Universe (showing the Avengers issue). They list all the characters - including Puck. The issues include :

Captain America 323
Conan Barbarian 188
Conan the King 37
Daredevil 236
FF 296
Ironman 212
New Mutants 45
Amaz. Spiderman 282

Alpha Flight makes appearances in two upcoming books about to be released.

Sasquatch and the Alpha Flight Omnijet make it into Insight Editions Marvel Vehicles: Owner's Workshop Manual. It's like an Official Marvel Handbook for vehicles. I saw a preview copy at NYCC today.

Also, Alpha Flight appears in the biggest BIGGEST book in the Alpha Flight collection: 75 Years of Marvel Comics. From the Golden Age to the Silver Screen (http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/popculture/all/01133/facts.75_years_of_marvel_comics_from_the_golden_ag e_to_the_silver_screen.htm) by Taschen. It's a monstrous oversized 712 page book that weighs a ton. You can see Puck reprinted on the cover of West Coast Avengers #1 and there's a blurb about Northstar and Kyle's wedding with a reprinted cover of Astonishing X-Men #51.

Meet the Marvel Superheroes came out today. It's a kid version of an Official Handbook, and published by Marvel Press. It has a surprsing number of X-men, Mutants and Fantastic Four given the movie rights thing... and a big emphasis on the Marvel Studio heroes (GotG, Thor, Cap, Avengers, etc.). It also has an unusual number of female characters. Aurora and Northstar each have 1pg entries, with new art. I'll scan later. I don't know who the artist is because it's so vaguely credited but given some time I'll figure it out. Aurora also appears on the cover, but not the dustjacket. I've just recently got my hands on Marvel Comics Presents #46, and one of the stories is a Namor short.

The best surprise appearance coming out of last week's books was definitely found in the backstory of Extraordinary X-Men #8 featuring Magik, Dr. Strange and Sapna. The single panel cameo shows Michael actually using his magic to accomplish something, rather than sitting quietly at a bar or bleeding to death somewhere near the North Pole.

Hopefully all of these cameos by our friends begin to amount to something more than simple page filler.

Definitely a good question, as to why all this mystical power was required to move the school. Another might be why certain members of this group were involved? The slow leak of details related to the Mutant vs Inhuman issue definitely has some intriguing elements.

Do you mean why so much? I'm guessing just because of the sheer size of it.

Yeah, it's cool when the creators remember details like that.

I'm sure someone may have mentioned this, and They aren't alpha flight in origin, but on the second season of daredevil, Murdock visits the NYC branch of Roxxon. As soon as I heard Roxxons name, I jokingly said so he's going to fight Omega Flight? :p

Wait, in s2 Murdock visits Roxxon? Spoiler space next time that was a joke it's not a spoiler.

Saw this on CBR (http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/shalvey-moss-help-marvels-heroes-in-choosing-sides-for-civil-war-ii) today:

Other characters, we just thought it would be interesting -- for various reasons -- to see how "CWII" would affect them. How Punisher would handle this new world where crime is prevented before it happens; how this very "grown up" ordeal might be seen from the POV of the kids of Power Pack; how the heroes of Alpha Flight might feel about all this, given that their boss is Captain Marvel.
Not sure if this means they take part in events, or if we only cutaway to them for a reaction shot like in the original CW.

I'm wondering how old the Power Pack they speak of will be?
It's been a while since we've seen Power Pack's Jack and Katie. Have they aged some? And will this be the complete group? Because Alex went off with Reed Richards and his family at the end of "Secret Wars."
Moss: Yeah, they'll have aged some, but not much. After some time with the Loners and Avengers Academy, Julie has decided to focus on a normal education, so she's enrolled at Empire State University in New York, and this story sees Jack and Katie coming to visit her. So, yeah, no Alex here, but the story does briefly deal with his absence. Writer John Allison (of the tremendously fun "Giant Days" series) and artist Rosi Kampe are handling this story, and they've done a great job with it -- staying true to the voice of the characters and the original series, but with 2016 very much in mind.

Does it make me less of an Alpha Fan that I stopped my subscription of captain marvel? I cut my subscription for two reasons: first in the 6 issues I read the the three former Alpha members (puck, sasquatch, and Aurora) are imho nothing but background characters and cardboard ones at that. I understand it's captain marvels book, but a supporting cast needs focus and character development as well, things they really do not get in this series. Like if this was my first introduction to Alpha Flight, I wouldn't even know Aurora had superpowers as she doesn't show them in the book once! Second, I know this may sound weird but I generally subscribe to comic series in which the title character shares (more or less) my morality on today's issues. Captain Marvel, both in alpha flight, and civil war, does not on so many levels it really devalues the reading experience for me in the former series to where I don't want to read it anymore.

-K-M-
08-20-2016, 04:29 PM
I'll admit I find most of the captain marvel issues dragging and overall slow. For new remembers yeah they haven't done a good job giving the supporting cast much backstory sans puck. In Ms.Marvlel (carols old book) they did a good job with sleepwalker, Arachne and machine man when they were working with her.

Phil
08-21-2016, 08:36 AM
Personally speaking, I wouldn't want them to get development in someone else's book.

Is that the nanobots from The Middleman tying all the magic users in Marvel to the stake? Including Illyana, who technically belongs to Fox?

It's cool to have a cameo, even a steps-removed one, in the MCU; but one minor issue I had with the movie, with the inclusion of Tina Minoru and especially Daniel Drumm was that it narrows the fields of magic. In the comics there are a lot of magics - sorcery, voodoo, sarcee, et al; in the movie, it seems to be just the sorcery.
